vegetative system, and grows even af

former giving auburn, golden, ;and
chestnut tints, and the latter the (talk
er shades. Any concentration on the
great vital centres, as intense study,
great grief, or excessive fright, with
draws the vegeto-vital force from the
surfaces and produces gray hair. It
is also. caused _by.too great warmth
and protection of the head. The
French and Italian women, who spend
much time in the open air with no co
vering Jon, their,
,heads, have heavy ;
suits of moist, beautiful hair. I would'
recommend to this lady to wash her
head every week in salt water, which
will stop its falling out, and rub the
skin of the head with a dry, coarse
towel.:, Then apply a dressing com
posed of equal parts of bay-rum and
sweet oil, in which a few drops of tinc
ture of oantharides have been mingled.
This will stimulate , the skin, and re
store her hair to its original color.—
Frequent brushing of the scalp will

- Powder.—TWo ounces of pre
pared chalk, half an qinee pulverized
borax, the same of orris-root pulver
iztidrand:quarter ofan ounce of cassia
powder.
Candles.—Allow one pound of alum
for every five pounds of tallow, dis
solve it in water, and then put in the
tallow and stirlt till they are both
melted together. •
Chapped Hands.—ln half a pint of
boiling water dissolve a pound of
white spap. - cut .( in shavings, and add
six ounces of olive oil and one drachm
of pulverized camphor, then pour it

- :This is a question which concerns
'thousands at this season. A supply
of fresh eggs is . a great addition to our
kitchen economy, and a most agrees
-ble-one to our. table. Fresh egs for
breakfast all the year round •is deci
dedly Utopian. In the first place, we
must provide light and air. Windows
are absolutely necessary on the south
side of the_ honnery, so that the win
ter's sun .can be' .nlade.available. for
;Warmth.. All the scraps and soap
grease of the'kitcben can be returned
to us in the shape of fresh eggs, and
will greatly lesserrtho expense of feed
ing the hehd.-, • They must have animal
food.' When the ground is open, and
;worths abundant, they are as well sup
-plied as though they dined on roast
beef and 'Mutton', but in winter it
must be given to them. All the bones
left from the table; the bits of fat, the
4crapings of the plates, etc., should be
treasured for their use. Keep an old
'kettleroh the baCk of the stove, turn
-all slops into it, even coffee-grounds,
.and when well-heated, feed it. At
- noon-time, it -can. be given.. smoking
hot, and quite watery—the warm drihk
helps to supply the carbon they need.

it fine, and they will eat it greedily.
Seep a box filled with.gravel, ashes,
-old plaster, slacked lime •r oyster
shells—even hard-coal ashes will not
come amiss—for hens must have food
needful to fOrm egg-shells, else they
will drop thorn shell-less.
For grain, we think a mixture is the
most profitable. Sweepings from the
grist9nill4o very well—oats, corn and
rye g round geoitad together coarsely, make
good food. Hens desire variety—will
not lay eggs on one kind of nutriment.
Where oil-cake and scrap-cakes can
be purchased, they are the most deal
,Xablelobd. Bone.manure is excellent
to go, with the scraps. To, this diet
add coarse corn-hominy, and you will
never complain that hens are not worth

Cleanliness is all-important—the hen
house should be whitewashed with
.hot
lime, spring and fall, and the poled on
which they rook 'Should' be covered
with kerosene'-oil every month or two.
These precautions are needful to de
stroy the insects which will breed in
- such places. Pure warm water in iron
' - baiiins, with a bit of brimstone in the
basin,*should_be given_ every morning,

kens are sick, give them soap-pills
made of yellow bar-soap; this acts like
cathartic. If chilled, give popper
