Saturday last was the day selected
for the Red Men's Pic-nic, and it hap
pened to be a favorable one. A pro
cession started from the wigwam of
Arapahoe Tribe of this place, at nine
o'clock, headed bra:, Band, and af
ter parading through our principal
streets, marched to Burchnoll's Grove.
There were about one hundred men in
line, including representations from a
distance, and the members of the Ar
apahoe Tribe. An Indian porly; - cmily
caparisoned and being led, brought up
the procession.
Burchinell's Grove, which has been
the scene of many pic-nits, in this and
former years,
never contained ono as
large:as the Red Men's. The crowd
dating the day and up to 12 o'clock
utinight xis immense, and the dane
ink; floor was occupied_incessantly'wlth
from six to eight sets. All appeared

The premium list for the next Hun
tingdon county Fair 'is published this
week. The Fair is to be hold on the
same grounds as it was in 1867, below
town, on Mr. Wilson's field, and is to
continuo three days, Wednesday,
ThUrsday and Friday, October 6th, 7th
and Bth. The arrangements are being
made and ample accommodations will
be furnished to every department to
be represented.
We do not think it is necessary to
urge our farmers, housekeepers, me
chanics, and others, to prepare for
this exhibition. F,iirs aro held or
should be held , to afford farmers an
opportunity for a comparison of their
products, and a comparison of their
views in regard to different cattle and
different 'modes of culture. Such a
comparison of views should stimulate
a renewed::enterprise, and give that
degree Ormebtal attention which far
mers (like every one else) need for ef
fecting the best results.. A mistake
too often 'made of late years, and at
the exhibitions in every county, we
presume, is to place the highest pre
miums on horses, and in consequence
horses and horse races are the - most
prominent features of the exhibitions.
We like fine horses and fast hordes,
but we think the general interests of
the farmer demand good roadsters and
staunch draught-horses, and all that
relates to their breeding and charm:
teristics should be afforded him at the
fair. - The excitement, experienced;
a horse-race may suit an American
mind. but it is not the substantial in
formation that will benefit the, farmer
in raising good stock for general uses.
We want to see the fine trotting hor
ses at the fair, as well as the good
draught-horses; but we are afraid the
public has come to look more for fast
trotters at a Fair than they have for
good cattle, largo vegetables, well fit
tine machineryand artistic handicraft;
and yet every one. , -of these features
are expected at the county Fait, as it
would not be ono without it. They
therefore should be recognized and re
ceive premiums: which will compare
more favorably with those on horses.
We offer these suggestiona'at this time,
not with the expectation that anything
will bo done at present, but to encour
age farmers and others who attend
the Fair to let their views be 'known
among those who can, if they will, re
move the complaints in the future.
