'The-weather during the past week
has been extremely favorable for field
labor and . such crops as are now in the
ground. The great bulk of the oats
crop in this region was cut during the
week and much of it is housed. A fall
of rain on cut oats does very little in
juryothersvise than to the straw, pro
vided - tlie'shower is short lived and
succeeded by a good drying atmosphere.
Continuously wet weather, however,
would soon destroy the grain as well
as the straw. So far as our observa
tion and "researches ches have Citonded we
are inclined to the opinion that the
oat crop of this season, as regards both
grain and straw, is better: than_it _has
been for several years past.
The weather since seeding time has
boom admirably adapted to the ) habit
of the oat plant, which seems to thrive
best in a cool, and humid. atmosphere.
A bushel of the grain grown in a cli-.
mate suitable to the utmost develop
ment 'of the plant frequently weighs
over fifty pounds--such a climate , as
that of Nova Scotia, for instance, and
also that_ of: Prince Edward -island,
where most magnificent oats are rais
ed, in weight almost .rivalling Indian
:`,l'lle..‘standar4' Of

somewhat too high, taken as a ,wbole.
A. is only favorable' seaSene, kliat

in part. In ordinary seasons twenty
five or thirty pounds is all that

twenty. _
The erop - Of early potatoes is much
the best we have had for many years.

bringing such ,exorbitant prices of
late . teitis asto judnee farmers to turn
their attention entirely in the direc
tion of their culture as a source of pro
fit and to devote-a greater breadth of
ground to that esculent than formerly.
Under the influence _of 'a propitious
season and extended cultivation the
result is seen in the enormous product

Those who paid two or three dollars
a pound for fancy sorts,-no better than
those in ordinary cultivation, will,
very likely, be extremely disgusted
when they find at the end of the sea

The greater part of the late crop pro

some places the potatoes may have
the rot, but the yield of the sound ones
will be so bounteous this autumn as to
'Compensate the growers in part for
the.low prices which must inevitably
rule throughout the winter months.
Most of the buckwheat sown during
last•inonth is well above ground, and
looks about as it usually does when it
first aPPears; It is a gent of
.rapid
growth, and its welfare depends very
much upon the atmospheric contingen
cies. A full yield requires favorable
weather throughout the whole period
of its short existence. It can with
stand neither extreme heat nor early
frosts, both extremes being alike dan
gerous-:-the one withering the blos
som, the other preventing the maturi
ty of the grain.
The crops in Northern Illinois aro
good. The farmers count on twenty
bushels wheat to the acre. The scab
is in lightly, but not so as to occasion
much alarm. As to corn fully three

MISCELLANEOUS
The black knot on plum trees can
be cured by dipping a paint brush in
spirits of turpentine and thoroughly
saturating the knot.
A writer in the Horticulturist sup
plies the place of bean poles by using
apple brush, which affords a shade .to
the vine and is a protection against
log win s.
The peach is predisposed to a strag
gling growth, and the strength of the
tree is often needlessly dissipated by
its great height. The nearer to the
root of the tree the main branches are
made to grow tho better.
A Goon NIGIIT Ktss.--Always send
your child to bed happy. Whatever
cares may trouble your mind, give the
dear child a good . -night kiss as it goes
to its pillow. The memory of this, in
the stormy years which may be in

and swelling up in the heart will rise
the thought : "My father and mother

Ayer's
Hair Vigor,
For restoring. Gray Hair to
ts- natural Vitality and-Color:
A dressing which
is at once agreeable,
healthy, and effectual
for preserving the
hair. Faded or gray
hair is soon restored
to its original color
with the gloss and
freshness of youth.
Thin hair• is thick
ened, falling hair checked, and bald
ness often, though not always, cured
by its use. Nothing can restore the
hair where the follicles are destroyed,
or the glands atrophied and decayed.
But such as remain can be saved for
usefulness by this application. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling .off, and
consequently prevent baldness. Free
from those deleterious substances which
make some preparations dangerous and
injurious to the hair, the Vigor can
only benefit but not harm it. If wanted
merely for a
HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can be found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it does
not soil . white cambric, and yet lasts
long ou the hair, giving it a rich glossy
lustre and a grateful perfume.

and all know that what it does once it does always

its Composition. We have thousands upon thou
sands of certificates of their remarkable cures of the
following complaints, but such cures are known in
every neighborhood, and we need not publish them.
Adapted to all ages and conditions in all climates;
containing neither calomel or any deleterious drug,
they may be taken with safety by anybody. Their
sugarcoating preserves them ever fresh and makes
them pleasant to take, while being purely vegetable
no harm can arise from their use in any quantity.
They operate by their powerful influence on the
Internal viscera to purify the blood and stimulate It
into healthy action—remove the obstructions of the
stomach, bowels, liver, and other organs of the
body, restoring their irregular action to health, and
by correcting, wherever they exist; such derange
ments as are the - drst origin of disease.
Minute directions are given in the wrapper on
the box, for the following complaints, which these
Pills rapidly cure:—
For Dyspepsia or llndigestion,
Listless
ness, Manguor and Loss of Appetite, they
should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom
ach and restore its healthy tone and action.
For _Liver Complaint and its various symp
toms, Bilious ricallacise, Sick ilifeadache,
Jaundice or Green Sickness, Bilious
Colic and lailions revers, they should be ju
diciously taken for each case, to correct the diseased
action or remove the obstructions which cause it.
For Eloysentery or Itiarrhina, but one mild
dose Is generally required.
For Valle ati4na, Gout, Gravel, Palpi
tation of the Heart, Pain in• The Side,
Back and Loins, they should be continuously
taken, as required, to change the diseased action of
the system. With such change those complaints
disappear.
For Dropsy and libropsical Swellings they
should be taken in largo and frequent doses to pro
duce the effect of a drastic purge.
For Suppression a large dose should be taken
as it produces the desired effect by sympathy..
Asa Din 11CPll, take one or two Pills to pro
mote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels into healthy action, restores the appetite,
and invigorates the system. Hence it is often ad
vantageous where no serious derangement exists.
One who feels tolerably well, often finds that a dose
of these Pills makes him feel decidedly bettor, from
their cleansing and renovating effect on the diges
tive apparatus. •
