HUNTINGDON, PA
Josh Billings. on Roosters.
There is not on the whole horizon
or ov live natur a more pleasing and
strengthening study than the Rooster.
This remarkable package of feathers
has bin for ages food for the philosofic
as well as the simple curious mind.—
They , belong to the fetherod sect de
nominated poultry, and are the bus
ba,nds of many wives. In Utah it is
konsidered a disgrace tow speak dis
respeckfully of a rooster. Brigham
Young's coat of arms is a rooster, in
full blast, crowing till ho is almost bent
over double backward.
The flesh of the rooster is very simi
lar to the flesh of the hen; it is hard to
distinguish the difference, especially in
your soup. Roosters are the pugilists
among the domestic bards; they wear
the belt, and having no shoulder to
strike, they'strike from the heel.
Roosters, according to profane his
tory, if my edukashun remembers me
right, wero formerly a man, who come
suddenly upon one ov the heathen gods
eta lime when he wasn't prepared to
receive company, and was for that of
fense rebuilt over in to the fast roos
ter, and was forever afterward des
tined tew crow, as a kind ov warning.
This change from a man accounts for
their fighting abilities, and for their
politeness tew the hens. There is no
thing in a man that a woman admires
more than his readiness and ability to
smash another fellow, and it is jiss so
with a hen. When a rooster gits lick
ed, the hens all march off' with the oth
er rooster if he ain't half so big or
liandsoine. It is pia& that wins a
hen or woman.
There is grate variety ov pedigree
among the rooster race, but for stiddy
bizness give me the old fashion domin
ique rooster, short-legged, and when
they walk, they hiwuz strut, and their
buzzums stick.out like an alderman's
abdominal cupboard. This breed is
hawk-colored, and has a crooked tail
on them, arched like a sickle, and •as
full of feathers as a new duster.
But when you come right down to
grit; and throw all outside influence
overboat:d, there ain't nothing on ertb,
nor under it, that can out-style, out
step; out•brag, or out-pluck a regular
Bantam rooster.
They alwuz put me in mind ov a
very small dandy, practicing before a
looking-glass.
Theyclon't weigh more than thirty
oubees, but they make as much fuss ez
if they weighed a ton. I have seen
them trying to pick a quarrel with a
two boss wagon, and don't think they
would hezetate tew fight a meeting
house if it was the least sassy to them.
It is more than fun tew hear ono ov
these•little chevaliers crow; it iz like
a_feur year old baby trying tew sing
a line out of the Star Spangled Banner
The hen partner in this concern iz
the most exquisit little boquet of neat
ness and feathers that the eyes ever
roosted on. They are as prime as the
premature yung lady. It is a luxury
to watch their daintiness, tow see them
lay each fether with their bills, in its
place,.and preside over themselves
with.az much delicacy as a belle befor
_bei'mirror. But the consummation is
tow see the wife a mother, leading out
six little chicks a bugging—six little
chicks no_bigger than humble bees.
It seems tew be necaSsary that there
should be sumthing outrageous in eve
rything tew show us where propriety
ends and impropriety begins. This iz
melancholy the case in the rooster af
fair, for wo have the Blinn& rooster,
the greatest outrage, in my opinion,
over committed in the annals of poul
try. These critters are the camels
among fowls; they mope around the
barnyard, tipping over hay-racks, and
stepping on the yung goslins, and evry
now and then they crow confusion.
If enybody should give me a shang
hai,,rposter I should halter him, and
keep him in a box stall, and feed him
'on cut feed, - and if ho would work in
harness, altright, if not, I would butch
eFhim the lust wet day that cum, and
salt him down to giv to the poor.
But there ain't nobody a going tew
giv me one ov this breed, not if 1 kno
it. .I don't think there is a man on
, earth mean enough to do it..
*meters do but Very little houshold
work. They wont lay eggs, nor try
to hatch enny, nor see to the young
ones; this satisfys me that there is sum
truth in the mythological account ov
the rooster's lust origin.
Yu can't. git a rooster to pay onny
attention to a yung one; they spend
their time in crowing, strutting, and
occasionally they find a worm; which
they make a remarkable fuse over,
calling up their wives from a distance,
apparently to treat them, but jist as
the hens git there, this elegant and
elaborate cuss bends over and gobbles
up the Morsel..
Just like a man for all the world I

CANCER SALVE —Mr. G. W. C. Gam
ble, of Millersburg, lowa, has lately
obtained a patent for a salve which ho
says will cure cancer, made as follows:
Take ashes of red oak bark being in
either a green or dry state, in quantity
twenty pounds; the ashes of the root
known as "bitter sweet," with its bark
either green or dry, five pounds; also,
of green poke root mashed fine, fivo
pounds. In preparing the compound,
take a wooden vessel of suitable size,
with perforations at the bottom, being
such as is used to run off common ash
lye. .Into this vessel put about five
pounds of the ashes of red oak bark
and of bitter sweet, when mixed in
the proportions above mentioned; then
add five pounds of the mashed poke
root, with the remaining portion of the
ashes of red oak and bitter sweet. To
this mixture add sufficient water to
moisten it without dripping. Lot the
mixture stand twenty-four hours.—
' Then run it off by adding water until
the strength of the ashes is exhausted.
The extract will now be put in a metal
h vessel and boiled to the consistency of
salve. Put in bottles with ground
glass stoppers, and it is ready for use.
Sr. Virus DANCE.—A Philadelphia
correspondent of the West Chester Ito
cord sends to that paper the following
recipe, which she says is a certain curd,
and gives her name by way of confir
mation :
Take of the roots of spikenard, bur
dock, comfrey, sarsaparilla, great
brake and Solomon's seal, each a hand
ful, of caster isinglass and hartshorne
shaving each half an ounce. Of best
raisins one pound. Pour on these in
gredierits three quarts of soft water,
boil them until they are reduced to
three pints. Of this decoction, give
the patient three wine glasses full, one
in the morning, one at noon, and ono
at night. The dose must be repeated
until the patient is cured. The patient
must bo kept as free from company as
possible.

Ayer's
Hair Vigor,
For restoring Gray Hair to
is natural Vitality and Color.
A dressing which
is at once agreeable,
healthy, and effectual
for preserving the
hair. Faded or gray
hair is soon restored
to its original color
with the gloss and
freshness of youth.
Thin hair is thick
ened, falling hair checked, and bald
ness often, though not always, cured
by its use. Nothing can restore the
hair where the follicles are destroyed,
or the glands atrophied and decayed.
But such as remain can be saved for
usefulness by this application. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. Free
from those deleterious substances which,
make some preparations dangerous and
injurious to the hair, the Vigor can
only benefit but not harm it. If wanted
merely for a
HAIR DRESSING,.
nothing else can be found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it does
not soil white cambric, and yet lasts
long on the hair, giving it a rich glossy
lustre and a grateful perfume.

Scrofulous poison is one of the most destructive

without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again,
It seems to breed infection throughout the body, and

into one or other of its hideous forms, either on the
surface or among the vitals. In the latter, tuber

heart, or turners formed in the liver, or it shins
its presence by eruptions on the skin, or foul ulcer
