Harper's "Drawer" has the two
following good things :
Good conduct at Sunday school
seems to be differently rewarded in
different localities. In a certain Epis
copal church in San Francisco, for in
stance, each scholar that is in his place
before opening school receives a ticket
for punctuality. Our correspondent
having, as was his habit, comp early to
school one Sunday, observed a class of
six or seven boys, aged from seven to
twelve years, all of respectable parent
age, throwing dice for who should win
the whole lot of punctuality tickets,—
Ho stood aghast at such depravity, in
such a place, on such a day—especially
when ono urchin roared out: "Sixes!
I've won; give us the pool !"
A correspondent relates an incident
that occurred in Omaha: A gentleman
who had received an insulting missive
determined to resent it promptly.—
Next day, thinking he saw his man
ahead, he hastily overtook him, and
administered several salutations. The
kickee remaining passive, the kicker
went round in front to see the effect,
and discovered to his regret that he
had kicked the wrong man. Ho apol
ogized, and was answered: "Don't
mention it. From the frequency of
such little episodes in my experience I
was sensible of your demonstration,
but was not aware you had made any
mistake."
A DISOBLIGING CLERK.—Ono rainy
day when little was being done by the
clerks at Stewart's up town store, an
elderly man stepped in and asked to
see some sheeting. Tho young man
behind the counter of that department,
who bad recently been employed there,
laid down a piece for inspection. "Let
me look at another," said the gentle•
man. The clerk leisurely replaced
the first piece and handed down an
other. This did not suit and more
was asked for, and as the clerk was
about replacing the goods already
shown, the customer requested that it
be left, that be might compare it with
other pieces. After• several more pie
ces bad been looked at, one scorned to
suit his wishes, but to make sure of its
quality he took hold of ono end and
carried it nearer the light. "Hold on,
sir, none of that," cried the clerk sharp
ly; "you can buy goods here at the
counter if you want them." He did
not like the trouble of folding up the
goods again. "I guess you'd bettor
step down to the cashier's desk and get
what is owing you," quietly remarked
the supposed customer, who was Mr.
Stewart himself. "You are too care
ful of yourself to do business for me."
There was nothing left for the indolent
and disobliging clerk to do but. settle
his accounts and leave. The lesson
was severe, and ono which will be last
ing in his own case and also in that of
his fellow clerks who saw the trans
-action.
QUESTIONS.—Young man, didn't you
think just as much of your loving
mother when she was preparing your
breakfast in the kitchen, as when she
was dusting the parlor? Young wo
man, was your kind mother any less
your mother when she was washing
your clothes or your face than when
she was receiving company in the
parlor ?
Aro you any less a gentleman or
lady when doing acts of household du
ties than when amusing yourselves in
company ? If you say "nay," then lot
mo ask you, are you despising and de
pressing those who aro engaged in
more useful employments than others?
Do you see the point?
RULES FOR READING.—Read the best
books which wise and sensible persons
advise, and study them with reflection
and examination. Read with a firm
determination to make use of all you
read. Do not, by reading, neglect a
more important duty. Do not read
with a view of making a display of
your reading. Do not read too much
at a time. Reflect on what you read,
and let it be moderately enjoyed and
well digested.

NEW' AND ELEGANT HEARSE

Iluntlngdon, May 9 2 1566—tf
An exchange says: It is convenient
to farmers and croppers to have an
easy and correct rule by which to
measure corn iu cribs. Here is one—
having leveled the corn in the crib,
measure the length, breadth, and
depth, and multiply them together,
and deduct from the product one-fifth;
and you have the number of bushels
in the ear—for shelled corn take one
half of this. • To he strictly correct,
add half a bushel for every one hund
red. Farmers who are fond of cy
phoring can test the correctness of
this rule by taking 1,728 solid inches
for a foot, and 2,159 inches in a bushel,
and see that the latter is nearly ono•
fifth larger than the former.
Nine tomtits of the diseases which
happen to the hoofs and ankles of hor
ses are occasioned by standing on the
dry plank floors of the stable. Many
persons seem to think, from the way
they keep their horses, that the foot
of the horse was never made for moils.
titre, and that, if possible, it would bo
beneficial if they had cowhide boots to
put on every time they went out. Na
ture designed the foot for moist ground
--the earth of the woods and valleys
—at the same time that a covering
was given it to protect it from stones
and stumps.
The North British Agriculturist
says: To improve the size of potatoes,
whether planted with small or largo,
whole or even cut potatoes, when the
plants are only a few inches high, let
the shoots be reduced, by pulling them
up, to one or two, or at most three of
the strongest. The tubers will, conse
quently, be fewer, and very much lar
ger, also in measure nearly all fit for
market and the table. Every grower
will do well to try a few rows by way
of experiment, if he disbelieves the
truth of this statement."

will be pushed down or pulled up in
its mouth and give instant relief.

Hair Vigor,
For restoring Gray Hair to
its natural Vitality and Color.
A dressing which
is at once agreeable,
healthy, and effectual
for preserving the
hair. Faded or gray
hair is soon restored
to its original color
with the gloss and
freshness of youth.
Thin hair is thick
ened, falling hair checked, and -bald
ness often, though not always, cured
by its use. Nothing can restore the
hair where the follicles are destroyed,
or the glands atrophied and decayed.
But such as remain can be saved for
usefulness by this application. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. Free
from those deleterious substances which
make some preparations dangerous and
injurious to the hair, the Vigor can
only benefit but not harm it. If wanted
merely for a
HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can be found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it does
not soil white cambric, and yet lasts
long on the hair, giving it a rich glossy
lustre and a grateful perfume.
