I Olobt. '::HUNTING'D'ON, PA gaterial,Convul§ions in 18.68, The year 1.908 will long be remem bered-for its terrible earthquakes, erup tions, tidal waves and hurricanes. On January 3d, Vesuvius, exhibited great activity; Mid' after a season' of compar ative rest, became terribly agitated in October and November, throwing out streams of lava and showers of pumice stones. Shocks of earthquakes were felt at the same time in Italy, France, Germany, and the British Isles. On' the 27th of blareh, the Island of Ha waif in the Sandwich groupe, was vio lently convulsed. A tidal wave • sixty feet high, swept in from'-the sea, de stroying villages, and drowning both people and cattle: - The most dreadful visitation of the year was in Peru and Equador, where a treiiirndohi'earthquake took place on the- 13th of August, overthrowing sev eral cities and destroying many thou sands of lives. The ocean was heaved into immense' surging waves, which extended their undulations over the whole . of : the .Pacific, breaking with tremendous force on the shores of,, South .America ? Calfornia, the Sand- WiChlelee;l - apan and New Zealand. On.the 21st of October an earthquake of. acrisideirible . violence visited Cali fornia, damaging the city of San Fran cisco aild'eausing 'some loss of lives. On the 30th of October at eleven o'clock at night, England was visited by a very palpable shock of an earth quake which caused great alarm where ever it was felt. An earthquake at Taranaki, Now Zealand, destroyed a large amount of property. - On the night of January 31st a ter ailble4itle:berst.over-London and ex tended itsravages throughout thecoun try, even' hseledirig 'Scotland and Ire land. Many lives were lost and a vast amount of property destioyed. ' In March a terrific cyclone swept the Mauritius, rendering 50,000 - persons houseless and destitute. On the Oaks day a terrific thunderstorm burst over London and a large part of England causing much destruction of property and the' 'Use Of - many lives: About mid-summer extensive fires broke out in _thesmoors of -Yorkshire -which laid many,4,l3onsande of acres of land waste and destroyed stock and game. The great heat caused an early harvest in Great Britain, but labor had to be sus pended diiring the' heat of the day, and many deaths from sunstroke oc curred. Excessive heat and drought prevailed in Russia, the United States and Canada, and the deaths from sun stroke in these places were greater than was over known. In Europe vast tracts of forests in Esthonia and Livonia were ravaged by fire, and near Riga the sky:was darkened by smoke for several weeks. It was not until the month of September that the Eu glish pastures were refreshed by a plentiful supply of rain; but when it came the heated earth put forth its verdure with extraordinary rapidity. During the year very disastrous inun dations occurred in France, Switzer laud and, ltaly. SHE- 'WOULDN'T MARRY A MECHANIC. —A young man began visiting a young woman, and appeared to be well dressed. Faded or gray hair is soon restored to its original color with the .gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thick ened, falling hair checked, and bald ness often, though not always, cured by its use. -Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the glands atrophied and decayed. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from turning gray or falling off, and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts long ou the hair, giving it a rich glossy lustre and a grateful perfume. Prepared by Dr. J. C.
