Barnum (Dom.) over Beardsley, 700. ;1 Last week both branches of the Legislature rushed through with light ning speed, and sent to the Governor for hie signature,- a bill giying that of ficial,the power to commute the death penalty' to 'that of imprisonment for life. This bill was intended to reach Eaton's ease, as a groat pressure was being brought to boar on the Governor, to save the life of that criminal. The Governor, however; was in no haste to take advantage of it and up to this time has not signed the bill. It is now in the hands of Attorney General Brewster, who is understood to hold that there are grave legal objections as to the policy of making it a law. Since writing the above the Governor has very properly vetoed the bill. Mi. Mr. Charles M. Wilder, a colored man, has been appointed and confirmed postmaster at Columbia, S. C. He was it 81w:re until after the breaking out of the war. Since then ho has been Deputy United States Marshal and member of the Legislature. He is rep. resented as' a tall, well-made, good looking mulatto,'of fair education and good business qualifications. His Post Office is worth $3,200 per annum.
