JAMES STEEL, r, Sq
James Steel; Esq., the subject of 'this 'no

in the borough of Huntingdon, and was the
son of the late Gen. William Steel. His_
mother was the sister ofiames Entrekin, Esq.,
the elder, late of Coffee Run, deceased. He
obtained his elementary education at the
Latin school of the llev. John Johnston of
this place, where nearly all the boys of the
town were taught at that time, who aspired
to knowledge higher than the common sub

law with the late Robert Allison, Esq., and
for several years after his admission to the
bar, remained in the'office of his preceptor,
engaged in its general practice. He was a,
good serivenor, did,a large ; amount of this
kind of business, and Was well acquOinted
with legal forms, instruments' and proceed

never necus'omed himself to public speaking.
For fourteen years after his admission to the
bar, ho associated with the gayest of society,
as well as the most intelligent; and it af
forded him great pleasure in his after life, to
relate the many happy and witty incidents,
which came under his observation, in h's
association with the lively and polished so
ciety,•of which Huntingdon was at that time
the center. He was three times elected Pro

with credit to himself and satisfaction to the
people, from 1830 to the close of the. year

In 1833 he connected himself with the

his means lasted, he was one of its financial
pillars. He loved its made of worship Mid
was peculiarly at home, in those great out
bursts of the-soul, of which that church fur
nishes such notable examples. Ni hallelu
jah, was so lofty, that lie did not delight to be
horns on it, to the bosom of his Divine Mas
ter. He loved the simple manners of the
common people and the common people loved
him. A very few years before his death,
when his adversities messed heaviest upon
him; and age and disease were summoning
him to the tomb, he frequently walked on
Sunday morning., six or seven miles up
Stone Creek, to hold Class, meetings, and en
joy himself at the hospitable firesides of the
good people of that neighborhood,. He was
wal-m friend ; a good neighbor; 'an agree
able and entertaining companion ; a loving
husband and father; and greater and better
than all these, he was that noblest work of
