Ebe Olobc. El .110UsE PLANTS.----Cuttings of house plants, such as garanitlinS, ftleldas, VOrhCilaS, ete., such as every one wants, may easily I. grown in the house. One of the best materials for the purpose we have found to be clear foie charcoal 'lust about like fine sand in the size, of grains. Use 3 00111111011 Crock ; see that it has good drainage; then (ill to with- in half an inch of the top with the charcoal, putting your cuttings in all around and near the edge, with about two buds in the charcoal and ono bud out. if you can, get a little piece of hanging moss from the woods, and lay over the whole, letting the cuttings protrude through it, mid letting it, (the moss) hang down all over the sides of the crook. Set it on the mantlepiece, or on a little bracket s h e lf i n some part of the room where its height will add to warmth, and at the same time, if you can, near the light ; water once thoroughly, and afterwards just enough to always keep it moist, but not wet. The object of the moss is to make the crock ornamental for the time being, and at the same time serve to keep a more even condition of moisture on the outside. Hyacinths in winter flowering should have the bulb placed so that its base only can touch the water; and for the first two weeks, either place the glass iu a dark room, or wrap around it a wrapper of some dark shade of paper. After the roots have started well, take off the paper wrapper, draw the bulb from the glass, and emptying out the water, cleanse the glass, and replace with fresh, soft rain water; replace again the bulb, and sot the glass where it will have plenty of light, air and warmth. If possible, never let the temperature of a room in which hya cinths are growing in glasses, go below 35 degrees Fahrenheit.—Hortieutturist. ESPALIERS FOR GRAPES.—Posts should be set apart two feet deep and twelve feet apart. This distance brings the posts between the vines, which are six feet scantling two inches square will reach from ono post to the third. The scantliug should be fastened to the posts; the lower bar eighteen or twenty inches from the ground, and the upper bar at the top of the poles six feet from the ground, which is as high as is convenient to reach for the grapes during the harvest. Wires one eighth of an inch in diameter should be nailed upon the bars, perpendicu larly, at the distance of three inches from each other. This method of pla cing the wire upon the espalier is pre ferable to the usual method of largo telegraph wire, placed horizontally, because, in the winter time, the intense cold contracts the long and large wire so much as sometimes to draw out the posts, at the ends of the row, to which they arc fastened.—E. W. Bull, in Mass. Ploughman. RAISING CALVES BY HAND.-A Cali• fornia correspondent says : "I have ta. ken calves from one to two days old to as many weeks, and taught them first to drink milk warm from the cow. When they are used to this, add a handful of corn meal, (or better still, oil meal,) and stir well while they are drinking. All milk may be withheld at perhaps three weeks old, by giving more tea and meal-barley or wheat meal will do perhaps better than corn. Tea is the best substitute for milk, and should ha made from good sweet hay, and not steeped too long. If the calves are troubled with seoures, stop tto meal a day or two, and give a little new milk. If they are constipated, hive a little more oil meal or rye meal." —American Agriculturist. PASTURAGE OF Cows.—lt is well known that Cheshire, England, is a great dairy county. This lies not far from Liverpool. Chester, the market town, is perhaps a dozen or 4fteon miles from that city. Dlost of the land has been under-drained, and top dress ed with ground bones, and such laud will carry one cow to the acre. Whore it has not been top-dressed and drained a cow will require two acres. They use 1,200 to 1,500 weight of bones to the acre about once in seven years. How many acres does it take to keep a cow well in this country ? Wouldn't pay to pring up our pastures.--11/ass -4cimsetts Ploughman. WHEN board fences become old and the boards begin to come off nail up right facing strips upon them against path post, and the boards will be held to their place, and the fence will last Several years longer. ALWAYS set a post fence over a ditch or near good drainage, and the posts always remaining dry, will 'last many years longer than those standing in wet subsoil. IN laying out garden fruits and veg etables, place everything in , drills or rows, that they may be cultivated by a horse, and thus save the expense of hand labor. PLANT a supply of osier willows on every farm. A rod square will furnish as many bands for binding corn•stallcs, straw, etc., as an acre of rye straw. ALWAYS keep a supply of copper wire on lik - kod, of different sizes, for repairing tools—it is greatly superior to either twine or iron wire. DIP well - seasoded shingles ;.r, wash and dry them before laying, and they will last much longer, and not ht.- come covered mith moss.
