that all don't think so, as we don't
know where the hoop:skirts would go.

II ave you been to see Johnston &
Watson's immense stock of Dry Goods,
Notions, Boots, Shoes, Hardware, Co
darware, Groceries, Oils, Fish, Carpets,
Oil Cloths, &c., if not, go and see them
and hear their prices, and be convinced
that goods are from 30 to 50 per cent.
cheaper there than elsewhere. Having
purchased their goods since the great
decline, they are prepared to sell their
goode cheap, having a small profit,
and are determined to do so. They have
taken much care to have their stock
for quantity, quality and styles unsur
passed in this section of the country.
To be satisfied that the above is strict
ly trite, call and examine their splen
did stock, which embraces all the latest
styles and novelties. If you hear their
prices you will be sure to purchase, as
their prices remind us of the good old
times we used to have. Give them a
Call. Their store is one door east of
the Washington Hotel.
Probable Child Murder.
The good people of Barree were
startled on Friday morning last by the
finding of a dead female infant under a
log near the bridge which crosses the
Juniata river at that place. A little
school girl, whilst in search of "slate
pencils" discovered the child, and a
coroner's inquest was held. The body
witiexafitineti itarnisl, who
found the child had been 'born alive,
whereupon the jury rendered a verdict
of death from causes unknown to the
jury. Several bruises on the child's
head and a scratch on the shoulder, in
dicated that, foul means bad been re
sorted to, but there was no evidence-to
justify the jury in rendering such a
verdict. We sincerely hope the fiend
who could thus dispose of her offspring
will be discovered and brought to an
swer for her crime.—Monitor.
Mere Ore Discoveries.
The mineral resources of the Juniata
Valley seem to be inexhaustible, and
are evidently but partially developed
as yet. The Sugar Valley Iron and
Ochre company, whose ochre works
and lands are about six miles below
Mount Union, near the Juniata river
on the left, have, in addition to their
extensive banks of ochre, come upon a
largo bank of brown hematite ore of a
very good quality. The bank extends
northwest and southeast, the regular
vein being forty feet wide. There has
been taken off one lift of ton feet, for
about one hundred feet. The depth of
the hank has not yet been ascertained.
Not long ago a shaft was sunk to prove
the vein, but no bottom could be found.
•On the other end of the property
there are three veins of fossil ore,
which the company are not working at
present; but by examination they seem
to be inexhaustible, and a good article.
—Mount Union Times.
Only for One Day
List Wednesday's Press brought the
confirmation by the. Senate of David
Caldwell as Collector of Internal Reve
nue for this District. Until Thursday
evening the most interested ones were
provokingly puzzled to guess how the
confirmation was brought about. Cald
well stock went up fifty per cent.
Thursday's Press knocked several cas
tles that had been built in the air, intopi
—the confirmation was a mistake of
the printer—it should have been "re
jection by the Senate." So we go.
Who's the next customer for empty
honors?
Bogus Marriage Notices
A few weeks ago we published a
bogus marriage notice, and last week
we received the compliments of the par
ties concerned for our pay. We are
not the only ones that have been so
maliciously dealt with—indeed, so pre
valent was the custom iu a neighbor
ing county, that we believe a general
law, attaching 11 severe penalty on the
perpetrator has been passed by the Le
gislature. We have a rule which will
prevent any further meanness of this
sort, and those who endeavor to de
ceive us and give needless notoriety to
the victims of their sport, may expect
to meet with the severity which their
impertinence demands. • It will be a
joke in which they will he the target.

Itiver.Dams vs. Fish
We concur in the following sugges•
tions of the Lewistown Gazette con
cerning the above topic. We cannot
see why shad, salmon, &c., should not
have free access to Our waters; and we
cannot toll, further, why Commissioner
Worrell has not paid the dominions of
the Juniata a visit. If he is too much
engaged in other localities (although
we know of but one,) then let us do
something ourselves. The law is good
enough, and all that is wanted is the
men to put it in execution.
"The alteration in the Columbia Dam
has already demonstrated that fish
will again be caught in abundance
in the Susquehanna and Juniata, if the
obstructions now in those rivers are
so altered as to permit their passage
upwards. On Friday a week shad
were taken at Fairview, a few miles
below Harrisburg, and pike, rock,
perch, and other migrating fish have
already made their appearance in unu
sual numbers. We trust the present
summer will not be suffered to pass by
without an alteration in the•dams on
the Juniata, and if the Fish Commis
sioner will not at once see to their al
teration, that the Grand Juries of Hun
tingdon, Mifflin, and Perry, will bring
the question before their respective
courts. No matter who made or who
holds them. There are natural rights
which no State nor company can de
stroy; and as our river is a natural
highway, any obstruction which pro
vents fish from ascending is to our
mind as much of an obstruction as a
fence on a public road, and that any
one can remove.

be with any change that could be
made. Let well enough alone.
Borough Statement
We think that the statement o
the receipts and expenditures of the
borough should be published from time
to time—say semi-annually. As local
information it is very important, as
the people desire an insight into the
finances. We have no doubt we are
flourishing, but yet many want to
know "bow is Old Huntingdon, and
how does she stand ?" Especially,
with respect to that town ball.

important, as we do not wish any mis
