The Decoy which Makes Young Men
Drunkards,
Go with us to tho public houses,
where a number of young men are as
sembled. All in life and gaily. A
few among them may be young and
timid. They approach the counter,
and wino, and rum, and brandy, are
called for. Ono or two may stand
back, and say, no, gentlemen, wo do
not drink; please excuse us. Immedi
ately the rest turn and begin to taunt
their friends who refuse to drink, say
ing they are afraid of getting "tight,"
of the "old man," and some whisper
audibly, "Well, they are, mean fellows;
they are afraid they will have to spend
a cent !" Here you see two very sen
sitive nerves are touched—Courage
and Cleverness. Their bosoms swell
with pride; rather than bear these
flings of their companions, they step
up to the counter and join in the rev
elry. The ice is now broken, the first
great net of the drama performed.—
Others follow in natural order, until
the individual who refused to drink at
first, reels along the public streets
without shame.
Such is the manner in which thous
ands of our promising young men are
led away by a false ambition ; and
thousands more will follow in their
path unless they learn the meaning of
courage.
We have in our mind a number of
noble-hearted, good-meaning men, who
I do not possess strength enough to lace
opposition. Rather than be called
mean they will follow up these habits
of drinking until their appetites be
come u ncon trollable.
We advise you, young men, when
you aro in company, and solicited to
drink intoxicating liquors, to say
frankly and decidedly that you do not
indulgo in such things, and you com
mand their respect, and they will be
forced to admit that your courage is
sufficient to bear all their taunts and
not yield the right. Those Who stem
the tide always meet opposition; but
never despair—press onward. Our
only hope of rescuing tho race from
this.brutal, slavish passion rests \V nil
the young. Will you, young friend,
have courage, true, high and Uod like
courage, to Kite this growing evil and
banish it from our land.
A Menagerie of Drunkards,
The most foolish predicament a man
can get into is to get drunk. In drunk
enness every man shows his strongest
and most ardent passion. There are
six kinds of drunkards, and if you will
go into a city drinking place, where
there are a dozen men under the in
fluence of liquor, you will be sure to
find these six different animals.
The first is ape-drunk. He leaps,
and sings, and yells, and dances, mak
ing all sorts of grimaces, and cutting
up all sorts of "monkey shines" to ex
cite the laughter of his fellows I 0,
terribly• silly is the drunkard clown.
The second is tiger-drunk. He
breaks the bottles, breaks the chairs,
breaks the heads of tiAlow carousers,
and is full of blood and thunder. His
eyes aro fired with vengeance, and his
soul raves with murderous frenzy. Of
this sort are those who abuse their fa
milies.
The third is hog drunk. Ho rolls in
the dirt on the floor, slobbers and
grunts, and going into the street makes
his bed in the first ditch or filthy cor
ner he tnay happen to full into. He is
beavy,olumpish, and sleepy, and cries
in a grunting way for a little more
to drink.
Tie fourth is puppy-drunk, lie will
weep for kindness, and whine his love
and hug you in his arms, and kiss you
with his slobbery lips, and proclaim
how much ho loves von. You are the
best man ho. ever saw, and will lay
down his money or life for you.
The fifth is owl-drunk. He is the
wise man in his own conceit. No man
must differ with him, for his word is
law. Ile is true in politics, anti all
matters must be taken as authority.
Ilis arm is the strongest, his voice the
sweetest, his horse t he fleetest, his tur
nips the largest, his town the finest of
all in the room or land.
The sixth and last animal of our
menagerie is the fox-drunk man. He
is crafty, ready- to trade horses and
cheat if he can. Keen to so ike a bar
gain, leering around with low cunning,
peeping through cracks, listening,un
der the caves, watching for some sus
picious thing, sly as a fox, sneaking as
a wolf, he is. the meanest drunkard of
them all.
Drunken Children.
The reprehensible practice of sup.
plying children with intoxicating
drinks for (lick own Consumption is
still carried on by many publicans and
beersellers all over the ;country, and
we are glad to notice that in the me
tropolis an effort is moat to be made
to enforce a clause in the police act
against supplying with drink children
under sixteen years of ago for their
own consumption. A correspondent
of the Star says the extent to which
beer shops, public houses, and gin pal
' aces are frequented by mere children
for the purpose of drinking is simply
frightful. On Monday morning the
magistrates of Liverpool had before
then) twenty boys and girls under the
age of seventeen, nail of whom had
been found beastly drunk in the public
streets on Sunday, and incapable of
taking care of themselves." On a giv
en Sunday the publicans of Manehes
ter lied the pleasure of seeing 22,000
children enter their premises. A cler
gyman entered a room in a Manches
ter beer shop at about one o'clock in
the morning, and found it full of boys
and girls drinking. In Derby mere
children have been found drunk in the
tap room of a low house. In Salis
bury a gentleman saw s crowd of
young people, some of them Sunday
School scholars, imbibing beer in the
back premises of a beer shop on Sun
day morning during church hours.—
So great is the evil of juvenile drinking
in Middlesborough that the chief con :
stable has thought it his duty to issue
a police notice in reference to it. Near
Portsmouth is a sort of public house
fair, and from it young people have
been seen rolling home drunk at seven
o'clock in the morning, they having '
been drinking and dancing all night.
In Scotland, also, this 'sad evil pro
vails.—Liverpool Times.
