Death of w !aloof
There died recently, in the Borough
gf IVilinore, Cambria Co., an old man
,flamed Bernard Halligan, who iu his
; lifetime Was a miser of the first class.
He,.tvis,, we believe,'s. common laborer
occupation, unmarried„ and lived
alonein the meanest manner in the
,most cheerless domicil. Previous to
his death he had his will drawn up,
bequeathing the bulk of Lis possessions
to,P pistor fin Ireland, but when the
dOeument was presented to him forhis
.signaturo he refused to affix his name.
He subsequently had one of his neigh
bors called in, to whom he committed
the'eare oesinOld trunk, which, after
I bis death, was Opened, and is said to
•have'cputained.soque $760 in gold and
:silver, toget o her- with a considerable
sum in greenbacks. So miserable did
this old man.live that when his neigh
bors came to prepare his body for se
pulture not a shred of clean linen
could befimnd;in the house with which
to' dress it. Everything in and about
his miserable abode bore the impress
of squalid poyerty and the utmost deg
,radation. - -

Thot Meteoric Shower.
Frorn the many notices which the
expected meteoric shower of Tuesday
or Wednesday night last received, our
, good.people were generally on the
alert for the grand display. Tuesday
night we beard of a goodly number of
our citizens sitting up until a late hour,
anxiously awaiting that which was to
be, but unfortunately was not. We
have no doubt said -goodly number
counted more twinkles. in heaven's
lamps than over before. Wednesday
night wasthe same, with the exception
that preparations wore-made to ring
the bells if anything did make its ap
pearance. The morning light dawned
again, and again they were doomed to
disappointment. This closed the era
of anxious watching and sorrydisap
pointment. None of those who sat up
have furnished us with a description
of what they saw, .but we are led to
indulge in the hope that a few of them
derived some little consolation from
the fact that they wore fooled to watch
the stars a live long night, which under
any other circumstance they could not
have been prevailed upon to do.
In justice to the astronomers it is
reported that meteors wore seen from
some of the cities in more northern
latitudes, and the display is represented
as grand, but yet not as grand as the
ono in 1833. Our latitude, we are led
to conclude, is not very well favored,
as in Philadelphia and Pittsburg noth
ing unusual was witnessed. We can
only hope for the better. Our thanks
as well as sympathies we extend to
those of our wide-awake citizens who
were ready to apprise the sleeping
ones if anything remarkable should
occur.
Everett Literary Association
The above is the name of the litera
ry Society recently organized in this
place. We are happy to state that it
is in a fair way for improvement and
We trust success. We have always en
couraged literary societies, believing
that, the benefits derived from them
are not of a mere individual nature,
but extending to .the town which is
graced with it. Should our young
men avail themselves of the Opportu
nity to improve their mental faculties,
and thus receive that moral and theo
retical education, which is necessary
for many, indeed all, the duties of life,
not only they themselves will feel the
benefit, but society at large will ad.
vance as they advance. The associa
tion meets every Friday evening, their
room being for the present the Treas
urer's office, in the Court house. An
invitation is extended to our young
men generally to send in their appli
cations for membership.

On Wednesday evening last the
Huntingdon Ni.ozitrt Association gave a
Concert in the Court House Hall. The
room was well filled, the result of lib
eral advertising and complimentary
notices. The audience appreciated
the, music, vocal and instrumental,
but the opinion was concurred in by
all that the programme was a little too
monotonous to please all. .A few,more
latighable performances would have
made the variety that would have
madoho spice of the entertainment;
and wo hope the Association will profit
by the 'experiment when they perform
again. They return sincere thanks
for the patronage on the Occasion, and
are assured that our publicis grateful.

tion and bastardy. Plead guilty, and
the usual sentence inflicted.
John Akeley, indicted for larceny,
plead guilty and submitted.
Samuel D. Bolinger plead guilty to
a charge of fornication and bastardy,
and submits to the usual sentence.
George W. B. Sipe, indicted for as•
sault and battery, plead guilty, and
sentenced to pay a fine of $1 and costs.
Edward Pergrin, charged,lst, with
assault with intent to commit a rape;
2d, assault. Found guilty and sen
tenced to pay $1 fine and costs, and
undergo imprisonment for two months
in the County jail. •
George Lewis, charged, Ist, with
keeping a bawdy house; 2d, open lewd
ness. Not a true bill, and county pay
the costs.
Richard Burns, indicted, Ist, for as
sault on an officer; 2d, assault. Found
guilty, and sentenced to pay a fino of
$5 and costs.
Thomas Lloyd, et al, charged with
riot. Found guilty, and sentenced to
pay a fine of $lO each.

Christain Van Pool, ono of
the oldest mon in all the country, died
on Monday of last week,at his residence
in Half Moon Township, Centro coun
ty. The family possessed no record of
his birth but from his recollections of
occurrences witnessed by him, we aro
led to concur in the general opinion
that his ago ranged somewhere be.
tween 112 and 114 years. The old man
bad a very retentive memory,and was
always happiest when detailing his
reminiscences of years long gone.
Almost every important event of our
late war, proved in his estimation the
counterpart of some action of our rev
olutionary struggle. He had seen, in
common parlance, with his own eyes,
the immortal Washington, the noble
La Fayette, and many others whose
names will live in the memories of
their countrymen, so long as Ameri
can citizens feel a pride in their na
tionality. Old Mr. Van Pool was cer
tainly a living curiosity. Last har
vest, he was seen reaping, and shock
ing grain, in fact making himself - gen
erally useful, and serving as a hand.
In traveling he preferred to walk
rather than ride on horseback, or in
any species of conveyance. He•was
fond of reading, but seldom used spec
tacles. His great ago was most no
ticeable in his defective hearing, and
even this was not • seriously impaired,
'since he:could hear what was said to him
in ordinary tones, by those with whom
he was aCquainted. He said not long
er than last summer, while talking
with the writer of this, that if it were
not for an occasional touch of the rheu
matism, which annoyed him in damp
weather, he would bo as sound a men
as he was at eighty years of ago.
Then, no doubt, he felt that be was in

lowed to the nearest relative of soldiers who enlisted for
a term of three years and who ailed or were killed In the
service, to be paid In the following order: First, to the
widow ; second, to the children; third, to the falter, sad
fourth, to the mother.

per month; who hove lost bolt, feet $2O per month; who
have lost ono hand or one foot, or totally disabled In the
