Our Natio - nal Game,
On Thursday morning last our town
was graced with the presence of the
Resolute Club of Bedford; which had
come to play the Spartan Club; of this
place, composed of boys of the same
ago as the Resolute. The game com
menced, on tho grounds of the
at, 10 o'clock, on Thursday, and was
played very. well throughout. The
Spartans have gained a reputation, of
which they are deserving, but which
very few thought they would achieve,
while the Resolute boys take with
them the esteem and good wishes of
our people. We think the Resolute
boys should be played at home, to test
their skill, and wo hope the Spartans
will not claim the championship until
they beat them two games out of three
which is the.rule. We can expect the
Spartan to challenge the Social on
the strength of their victory. Tho
seore of the match game is-as follows:

—On Saturday afternoon last the
match game between the first nine of
the Social of this place, and the first
nine of the Juniata of Hollidaysburg,
which claims to bo the champion club
of WeStern Pennsylvania; came off on
the grounds of the former club. The
game commenced with the Social at
the hat (as usual,) and in the first in
ning they made 4 while they allowed
the Juniata to niako 15. The Social
should endeavor to play . more cau
tiously, or else remove those tender
feelings they might have a.t the begin
ring of the gaMe, whereby they have
allowed these and former opponents to
make a hard-to-beat run, which tolls of
feetaally at the end of the game. Ev
ery-inning should bo played carefully,
no matter whether ahead or behind.
Tho champions, wo think, have
found their match, all that is necessaiy
is for the first nine of the Social to
practice more togetlf,pr, and to moot
the Juniata soon: with the determina
tion to beat them. The best fooling

Agrleultural F'elk
We- hope our farmers and our road
ers generally have not forgotten that
a fair will be hold iu the latter part of '
September next. The complaint last
year was that sufficient notice had not
,been given to prepare, but this cannot
be'urged this year. If there are any
who have forgotten it, we trust they
will improve every opportunity in the
short time intervening to bring forth
every product and article to the best
advantage. Proper culture and care
aro requisite, so lot every ono exercise
both, and the next Pair will be what
it should be. The Agricultural Socie
ty meets next Tuesday evening, when
the premium list will be prepared for
publication. We understand that
higher prethiums will be offered than
on any previous occasion. This will
be no mere than justice, - and the so
ciety being better able to give high
'krises, We can consider it a settled fact
that they Will be given. Let farmers,
housekeepers, artists, mechanics and

Not the Iles°lotions
The Journal American of last week
published what it said was the resolu
tions adopted by the friends of Geary
at a meeting held in the Court House
ou the same day of the meeting of the
soldiers friendly to the election of Cly
mer. We refused to publish the same
resolutions simply because they were
not the resolutions read and . adopted by
the meeting. We have no idea of being
made a tool of to gratify the vanity of
would-be leaders of the Geary soldiers
of Huntingdon county. Not one of
every twenty of Goary's soldier friends
in the county belong to the League or
approve its-disorganizing proceedings.
It is composed of and controlled by a
select few who look upon Geary's in
terest as of secondary importance.

OBITUARY.
Ma. Enrron.—The funeral sermon
of Mr JACOB MAIZE ; of this city, war
preached by the writer on yesterday,
Sabbath, 29th inst., from Revelations
ch. 14, 13, to a largo and deeply sym
pathising congregation. And think
ing it might be relieving to the minds
of his surviving parents and other rel
atives in your locality. I would fur.
thor state that our deceased brother
bad been a most ivorthy and exempla
ry member of this charge, (Dcsplains
St. M. E. Church, Chicago,) ever since
he catno to this city. When at home
hero, his Sabbaths wore spent in the
Church, Sabbath School, and in the
use of all the means of grace. His
bearing and demeanor at all times,
was that of a Christian gentleman;
while his most intimate associates here,
as known to the writer, were those of
the most worthy-members, of the
B. Church is ChiCago. In his pocket
diary, which was shown the writer by
his most intimate' friend hero, scarcely
a single entry is made without some
reference to his religious state or en
joyments. We copy ono or two from
the many.. In last April ho says "I
long for holiness of heart,"—"l am not
satisfied with my present experience."
His last Sabbath in Freeport, one week
before his death, ho says again, "This
day has been one of rest and peace."
Rev. Mr. Cleaveland, at Rockford, who
knew him there said "Ho was a chris
tian among strangers." And this is
also confirmed by the men on the same
railroad, on which. ho was conductor.
A short time before his death ho was
told by . Rev. Cleaveland that the chan
ces of his recovery were against him.
And while he seemed somewhat start
led at the near approach' of death ho
nevertheless said in reply that "If it
wore the Lord's will he was willing
and ready to go." And from that time
forward during his sane moments ho
was much engaged in prayer, until ho
slept-the sleep of death,
