HUNTINGDON, PA
[COMI‘IIINICATED.I
SIIIRLEYSBURG, March 12, 1866
riILEND LEWIS :—An article in your
paper of last week, over the signature
of Henry R. Shearer, demands from
me a brief and passing notice, and ask
your kindness to indulge me a space
in the columns of the Globe. Self•viu
dication from charge, false as it is ma,
licious, prompts me to the task, unplea
sant as it is.
from my first acquaintance with
Mr. Shearer, for several years ago, I
entertained and exercised towards Lim
the most kind and friendly relation in
all my intercourse with him, both pri—
vate and public, and know not why,
for aught .1 have done, said or written,
he so basely and unwarrantably assails
me through the press, seemingly to
puff himself into notoriety at the ex
pense of one, as I am, old enough to be
his grandfather, whom he supposed too
humble and submissive to vindicate his
character from aspersion so foul and
malicious he ventured to advance. It
rests on Mr. Shearer to explain; or he
must boar the brand of a noted vilifier
—if not a liar.
It seems in the outset of his article,
which is exquisitely elaborate, that his
tender dignity was marred by a slight
allusion in the Herald' to some irregu
larity in carrying the mail by Mr.
Shearer; a paper with which I have no
connection whatever a fact well
known to Mr. Shearer.
I stake his vengeance on the editor
of the Herald for daring to notice his
public derelictions, real or supposed;
he resorts to the most fulsome blas
phemy and irreverence to the Deity
by sacrilegiously applying the term
"immaculate"—a most sacred attribute
of Jehovah, the Saviour of the world,
in derision as a prefix to his name,
calling him "immaculate Ben."
After thus vainly trifling with the
attribute of Deity he seeks another
victim to vent his exorbitant spleen on,
and because I happen to be the father
of "Ben" I was selected as the object
to further reek his vengeance ou ; and
having discarded his God and villified
me, he concludes with the boast of an
"approved motto," "never to shoot at
game more than once," &c., and drops
his peacock plumes after having shou
ted at me, like a spoilt and saucy ur
chin with ugly mouth and pouched
snout, charges which he know to be
false and unwarranted in fact. If the
axiom is true that "ho who steals will
lie" and vice versa, it may also be true
that he who disrespects Deity by tak
ing the name of God in vain, will also
commit both. This is a problem I
submit to Mr. Shearer to solve, and
that for his own benefit.
His self-praise and attempt at puff
ing np his greatness, by coupling his
miniature deeds to those of Captain
Blair, is also to me quite a startling af
fair; and for the benefit of Mr. Shear
er I will give him a brief portrayal.—
Captain Blair, while proprietor of the
stage line, in response to calls by the
National Government yielded to its
call for troops to beat back the rebel
hordes. Ho buckled on his armor—
raised a company of bravo men, who
like himself left the comforts of family
and home, to servo their country's
cause. Not so, however, with Mr. H.
R. Shearer. Although hearty , and hale
as Captain Blair, his valor lay in his
breeches. When happening to be hit
by draft, ho paid his commutation and
comfortably staid at home. Captain
Blair, while gallantly heading his com
pany in the memorable battle at Get
tysburg, fell, wounded in the right
arm, which, to save his life, was am
putated at the shoulder; yet he nar
rowly escaped from death.
While yet in his suffering condition
his contract term expired. A re-letting
took place in 1864. Capt. Blair applied
for a renewal of his contract, a fact
well known to Mr, Shearer, who, in
stead of doing honor to and favorinr , a
bravo and wounded soldier, ho opposed
him with might and main in getting
the contract over Captain Blhir by
underbidding him some four or five
hundred dollars per year; inflicting
considerable loss to the captain in road
stock, without deriving any material
benefit to himself, other than the small
gratification of beating a wounded and
meritorious soldier in the contest. The
result is, Mr. Shearer took the contract
too low to maintain his line well stock
ed; and be is drudging along as best
he can with uncomfortable and rickety
coaches, detrimental to public travel,
and with irregular mail facilities.
I advert to the foregoing facts in or
der to remind Mr. H. R. Shearer that
there is great danger in throwing
stones at others while living in a glass
tenement himself; and also to give the
public a knowledge of his fitness to
claim greatness for himself as seem
ingly he does by hitting at Capt. Blair.
In conclusion, I admonish Mr. Shea
rer hereafter to "honor old ago," and
not wantonly and nnprovokedly assail
another as he did me; and say to him
candidly—if be wants more from me,
he need only provoke it as ho did this
much I have said, and ho will be given
full measure, heaped and running over.
