County Convention.
At the last meeting of the Union
County Committee, the following reso
lution was adopted :
RESOLVED, That the Chairmen of this Committee ho and
ho is hereby instructed to call a convention of delegates
from the election districts iu this county, to meet in won
t-mitten the first week in April court, to take into consid
«ration and determine tics question of the adoption of the
Crawford county system of nominating candidates for of
fice, in future; and that the Chairman publish in the
county papers, with the call for the Convention, the
manner of making nominations under that system.
In pursuance of this resolution the
Union voters are requested to meet at
the usual places and elect delegates to
conventio - b - , - re
the Court House in Huntingdon, at 2
o'clock, p. m., Wednesday, the 11th
day of April next.
The main features of the system
above referred to are as follows :
At the usual time for holding dele
gate meetings the voters assemble and
bold an election for candidates for the
different offices to be' voted for at the
ensuing election—voting being confined
to those known to act with the party.
The officers of these elections arc usu
ally chosen by the voters present, and
are organized in the same manner as
at a general election, - except that they
are not sworn. The judges of the
several districts soon after assemble in
Convention at the county scat, and
cast up the returns, and the persons
baying the highest number of votes
for the several offices are declared the
candidates. These return judges when
thus . uSsembled in convention, appoint
the County Committee and district
conferees, and transact any other busi
ness that would be proper for a cowl
ty convention. Candidates are usually
required to announce their names in
the county papers before the primary
elections.
The Convention to be held in April
simply to determine whether this
system will be adopted, and should it
be adopted the convention will no
doubt direct a further publication of
rules and regulations prior to the first
election under it in August next.
A. 11. BAUMAN,
Chairman Co. Corn.

The people of Lewistown talk of
having a market in their midst. That
is a very good thing to talk about, but
a very pitiable thing if it ends in talk.
From what we have seen here, we feel
satisfied that it requires a market
house of some kind or other, at some
point or other, before the project will
be feasible. Before a farmer will back
up to a curb stone and sell, he will go
back to his home and whine over the
domineering spirit of our people. If
we can't accommodate them,thoy will
not try to accommodate us. Farmers
want fair play, and a fair field to work
on. If oar citizens can't go to a little
sacrifice of treasure to secure a great
benefit then a farmer is justified in not
standing out in the cold to sell to ac•
commodate them.

A Startling Story, if Tluo.
Tho Philadelphia correspondent of!
the Charnbersburg Repository endeav
ors to bring the assassin Booth back i
to life. He writes:
"A startling idea has lately been
broached in different parts of the coun
try, which seems absurdly improbable
at first thought, but which on investi•
gation bears marks of possibility to say
the least. It is that John Wilkes
Booth,tho assassin of Abraham Lincoln,
is still alive, and that it was a. compa•

od ciincorery by our police of a society
in this city which has been holding
clandestine meetings for the past three
months, for the purpose Pf I'f icing mo
ney to transmit to Booth, who is :'aid
to be in Canada. The Wilkes Bari
Record of the Times, in a late issue,
speaks of a similar organization in Lu.
zerne county. Those who believe in
the possibility of the story, argue that
Surratt, who Wa3 with Booth up to
the fatal Good Friday, achieved his
escape and is now in Canada, and they
say that Booth might have done like ,
wise. It will be remembered that at
the time of the trial of the conspirators,
Booth's death was taken for granted
and was never legally demonstrated.
The men who were hung never testi
fied to his decease even in their last
confessions. The believers say that
another individual might readily- have
been mistaken for Booth. The latter
was a very handsome and fascinating
man, and his appearance was exten
sively imitated by other actors. It
will be remembered too, that shortly
after Booth's supposed death, the pa.
pers stated that his head had been pre
served and deposited in a Government
medical institution in Washington. It
is now said that this head has been
examined by a distinguished physician
I who knew Booth well, and who says
that from the craniological develop.

posed to once have rested. It is known
that no friends of Wilkes Booth saw
the body buried for his."
