61obe. HUNTINGDON, PA. Wednesday morning, Deo, 27, 1865, W. Lewis, Editor and Proprietor Hugh Lindsay, Associate Editor. ANDREW Jouxsox.—The manner in which the faithful (?) Democracy sus thin Mr. Johnson is really amusing.— They claim him as all their own.— Only a day or two ago, a loud mouth ed "Democrat" remarked to us that ho thought Andy Johnson was doing the fair tiling. Mai, be Was currying out the principles of the Democracy to a T. Now that the war is over, and we have come out of it successfully (no thanks to the "Democrats") with Pres ident Johnson always on the side of loyalty and a permanent union of all the States, these cursed treason sneaks are endeavoring, by their . . support, to kill Mr. Johnson; but up to the present writing be has shown his good sense by keeping aloof from their machina• tiona• Even if he had the will, ho has the experience of Geol. McClellan in living letters before him. It took them only about six months to sink McClel lan so deep in political infamy, that ho will never again rise, even to the sur face. Mr. Johnson has no desire to be placed in the same boat with Little Mack. Ho is, and always will be, a friend of universal freedom—a thing the "Democrats" despise. We are terribly mistaken if ho should be so blind, after the confidence reposed in him by the loyal masses, as to be led away from his pure and honest mot ices. His past life would then be a lie. The game of the "Democracy" will not work. Andrew Johnson is no friend to either an open or a secret enemy of his country. LIBERTY TO ALL.—Secretary Seward has issued a document stating that the Amendment to the Constitution in re lation to the abolishment of Slavery, has been ratified by the necessary number of States. Tho amendment has become a part of the Constitution of the United States. The American Nation is DOW truly a free ono, and the taunts of many upon our ineonsis. tency in this particular will cease upon a knowledge of this fact. The voice of liberty will be heard throughout all the land. The curse of slavery is for ever removed, and it, like the rebellion, has passed away; but we yet mourn tho effects of the evil. It is a pleasing consciousness that while slavery is dead, the Nation survives the shock of •the great revolution it was the means of producing; and now that the evil is past, the nation will live - nntram meletlby its corrupting and distract ing elements. Long live the free Re public! A REPORT PROM GEN. GRANT.—This hero has sent a report to President Johnson which gives some information as to what ho observed in his recent tour of inspection through several of the Southern States. We make the following extracts from the same: The following are the conclusions comp to by me: lam satisfied that the mass of the thinking men of the South accept the present situation of affairs in good faith. The questions which have heretofore divided the sen timents of the people of the two sec— tions—slavery and State rights, or the right of a State to secede from the Union—they regard as having been settled forever by the highest tribunal (arms) that man can resort to. I did not meet any ono, either those holding places under the Government, or citizens of the Southern States, who thinks it practicable to withdraw the military from the South at present.—l The white and the black mutually re quire the protection of the General Government. It is not the thinking portion who would use violence towards any class of troops sent among them by the General Government, but the ignorant in some places might; and the late slave seems to be imbued with the idea that Atie property of his late master should by right belong to him; at least should have no protection from the colored soldier. There is dangerof collision being brought on by such causes. In some instances, the freedman's mind does not seem to be disabused of the idea that the freedman has the right to live without care or provision for the future. The effect of the heliet in the division of lands is idleness and accumulation in camps, towns and ci ties. In such cases 1 think it will be found that vice and disease will tend to the extermination or great reduction of the colored race. gm. Hon. Daniel S. Dickinson in a speech made in Washington a few ere in , rs since said:— "Andrew Johnson is no hbt house plant but a mountain oak, which defies the fury of the thun der-gust. Intrepid yet patient, firm but forgiving, with the - Union and the Constitution as his pillar and his cloud, he seeks to reconcile and bring togeth er again the estranged children of a common father. Let us all aids him in the good work and secure its ac complishment." Major Harry Gregg, of this State, has gone on a tour to the va rious cemeteries where the dead sol diers from Pennsylvania are buried, for the purpose of conveying their re. mains to places in the North. ra•-- Hon. A. .A.: Barker, tho Repro. eentative in Congress from this district, has been placed upon the Committee of Claims. - - 55'3;Rhall "reply" in our next. COURT 'AFFAIRS.
