We - are daily suiprised to see the
number of minors who are clothed in
the "bfues," after having been accep
ted and reeeiveit their bounty. We_
like to see - the patriotic spirit of the
:lioys thus'slimVing itself; but wo think
if these
,oring Joys would take a see
ond thought,. they would not be so ea
ger to put their lives in jeopardy. We
give this caution not that they would•
nt't make good fighting soldiers, or' e
ven out-march the strengest veteran,.
but because they arc more apt So catch
disease,--are. less *able to withstand
the hardships and privations of a vig
orouscampaign,;—;and other reasone,
- which, they on reflection could find for
tberneelVes . .. The boys we have seen
.have no.doubt forced their. parents to
consent, by hinting or boldly saying
that they*l.Were;determined to go to
war. `;iiii.fittrert should strive to
influence their young sons to give up
this notion. - •
Thera aro;Atie admit some instances
in which youths, anger tbe age of 18,
(for it is to thissiclasa - we now allude,)
have overcome the trials • and difficul
ties of a soldier's life, butthe cases in
the different aril:T . :hospitals prove
that tfie'majoiiiy of the inmates are
boys. •
We are not one of those who wish to
discourage Onlistments, but, on the
cotitrary, would be glad to see each
township's quota filled, but when we
see mere boys accepted into the, 'ser
vice, to serve three, years of hard
ships, while young men, older and
stronger, could as readily go, we be
come resented, and feel it a duty to
say somethinr , to prevent its repeti•
tion.
To . ieethis spirit in those boys, wo.
think, ought to make blush with
shame all thciso - older cowards, who
cannot evert be Coaxed by the aid of
bounties, into the - array. Each of these
home-mrds- should.. remember that
every one of these noble, youths who
falls--tfalls as a
,t 4 acrifice for him.

Shirleysburg's quota we understand,
is full, but it requires a few more dol
lars as well a few more men to fill the
quotaofShirley township. Ske has been
visited with agents frOm neighboring
counties, who, With their pockets full
of greenbacks are working on the af
fections of a. few, inducing them to
enlist. .Such appears to be the case
throughout all our townships. Hunt
ingden county and her patriotism are
becoming popular.

APPALLING tRAGEDY.
• From the Johnetowu Democrat, Pub.l7.
We are called upon ibis week to
chronicle one of the most, heart-ren
ding hOmicides that ever occurrea in
Johnstown, or even within the limits .
of Oanabria county. In doing so we
shall endeavor to adhere as closely to
the facts as it is possible for one to
do, whO•waa an eye-witness to the
scene from the beginning., -
• It appears that certain rumors gai
t,ed publicity, so fur as to - come to the
ears of loseph Moore, of this city, im
plicating Jordon Matbourg in refer
ence to alledged criminality with the
former gentleman's wife. Whether
these rumors are true or not, it is not
our province to record. We may say,
however, that Mr. Moore believed
them to be true, and' laboring under
that impression, he threatened to
shoot Mr. Marbourg and did it is said
make threats to'that effect on Wed
nesday or Thursday last.
On Friday morning lase, struggling'
with that fearful excitement of mind
that jealOusy •alivays: produces, he
met Mr. Marbourg coming out of. the
Peet Office door, and seizing him with
the left hand, flourishing a revolver
in the right, be told hiin after a few
moments conversation, to prepare for.
death, for he certainly
,inteilded to
'shoot him, and suiting the action to
the words, he fired five shots, three;
taking effect in the head, one .in the
left breast, and ono in the. left .arm.
My. Marbourri fell* for Ward on :the
. .
pavement and e.i.tpirett immediately.
Those who wereiiresent a.t'firgt must
have fled, as•there • was 'scarcely any
one near When, we arrived . on . the
ground. As soon as, we heard the,re
porta of the pistol,we ran down the.
office stairs, and, tticied'bk several oth
ers, raised Mr. Marbourg op,. but ho
only : breathed once or twice,. when
life was.extinct. We aided in - carry
'jog the body first to Esquire Rutledg
e's office, and then to the residence of'
his.fainily,,where we . .witnessed a most
appalling Scene. • •
•
We believe Mr. Moore never attemp
ted to deny that he shot the deceased;
at the tithe justified the,.action—but.
on his leaving in the cars for ho
seemed to deeply regiet the • rash act.
We have' never, witnessed a inure
melancholy and terrible : tragedy dar
ing.oiir Ti•tdy, "jealousy- is
the-rage of a man." How, the frantic
spirit rai'ds' Around the walls of its
clay tenement! IloW revenge wells,
up .from the , deepest recesses 'of the
heart and : Vitulkatte: supposed ;insult!
116 W the sullen spirit refuses all con
solation: but that which is sanctified'
by the blood of its doomed victim!
How intently paraliied, too, did that
victim appear! A halo, stoat,
.and
rugged frame that might have easily
AeTended itself againat assault, stood
passive as a lamb before.the slaughter.
.Not.tt hand - waaraise4 not a geatu-e
Was . Made; net' one effort at self-de
fence ! The occurrence becomes more
strongly impressive on this account.
Perhaps the deceased could not bring
hiS mind to believe that his assailant
was in earneat, as he was protesting
his innocence of the charge, and was
endeavoring to satisfy Moore of his er
ror, in charging him With so.great an
offence. After Mr • Moore had com.
_milted the terrible dood. he repaired
to the office of Irwin Rutledge, Esq.,
and locked himself its by turning the
bolt inside. He gave himself up to
the authorities and was taken up to
Ebensburg jail by officers Reilly and
Strayer, on the 9:30 train. We may
Bay here, that Mr. Moore has always
been considered au inoffensive, p.eace
able, industrious man and a goon viii.
