Commonwealth :
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, The President of the United
States, by his Proclamation, bearing date on
the third day of this month, has invited the
citizens of the United States to set apart
THURSDAY, THE TWENTY SIXTII OF
NOTrEMBER, NEXT,
as a day of thanksgiving and prayer. N-vr
I, ANDREW G. CURTIN;
Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsyl
vania, do hereby recommend, that the people
of Pennsylvania do sot apart and observe the
said day accordingly, and that they do espe
cially return thanks to Almighty God, for
the gathered harvests of the fruits of the
Earth,—
For the prosperity with which he has
blessed the industry of our people,—
For the general health and welfare which
He has graciously bestowed upon them,—
And for the crowning mercy by which the
blood-thirsty and devastating enemy was
driven from our soil by the valor of our bre
thren, freemen of this and other States,—
And that they do especially pray for the
continuance of the blessings which have been
heaped upon us by the Divine Hand,—
And for the safety and welfare and success
of our brethren in the field, that they may be
strengthened to the overthrow and confusion
of the rebels now in arms against our belov
ed Country ;
So that Peace may be restored in all our
borders, and the Constitution and Laws of
the land be everywhere within them, re-es
tablished and sustained.

ELI &Inn, Secy. of the Commonwealth
PENNSYLVANIA, SS
In the name and by the authority of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, An
drew G. Curtin, Governor of the said
Commonwealth :
A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS, The President of the United
States, by Proclamation, bearing date on the
Seventeenth day of October, inst., has called
for THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND VOL
UNTEERS, to recruit the regiments now in
the field from the respective States : And
whereas, By information received this day,
the quota of the State of Pennsylvania under
said call is declared to 10 THIRTY-EIGHT
THOUSAND TWO 'HUNDRED AND SIX
TY-EIGHT MEN, (38,268 ;) And whereas,
The President, in his said Proclamation, re
quests the Governors of the respective States
to assist in raising the force thus required :
Now, therefore, I, Andrew G. Curtin, Gov
ernotfrof the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,
do earnestly call on the good and loyal free
men of this Commonwealth, to enlist in the
service of the United States, under the Proc.

January next, on which day the President
announces that a draft will commence for
any deficiency that may then exist in the
same.
The freemen of Pennsylvania enlisting
under this call will be attached to regiments
from this State. All who are willing to en
list are requested to present themselves at
once, for that purpose, to the United States

offices, in the respective cities, towns and
counties. They will receive the following
sums as allowance, pay, premium, and boun

In making this appeal to the good and loyal
freemen of Pennsylvania, I feel entire confi

Let us maintain the glory which their valor
and conduct have reflected on tho Common

promptness and alacrity on this occasion,
that they have not abated in courage or love
of country; or in the determination that the
unholy rebellion, already stunned and stag

FLAX! FLAX!! FLAX ! !!
'THE UNDERSIGNED HAS SE
cured the latest improved machinery for breaking
cotching Flax. It Is now in successful operation.
I desire it to be understood that I am prepared to buy all
the flax that the farmers raise, above their household
wants, and If they desire I will prepare what they want
for their own use. This machinery will dress in two
days more flax than one man can In the ordinary way in
thirty days. The flax after it is pulled and seperatal from
the stock, should be spread on a meadow, thinly and reg
ularly, to be exposed to the dews for a week or ten days
until the stock assumes a silver grey color,
the under
side should then be turned up and treated 1u the same
way. On a dry day it can then be tied in bundles and is
ready for the mill. It is not necessary to dry it by fire or
smoke It over an oven, as this is only trouble for nothing.
An acre of good flax is worth from thirty to thirty-five
dollars without counting the eetd. Sumac will also be
bought.
