General Stone's Alleged Treason, of tilo New Volk Ti bone.] WAsumfroN, Feb. 11.—The action regarding Gen. Stone excites no sur prise among those who have been fa miliar with his condoct the last six months. ( len. Stone's wife is notorious for her Secession tendencies, while his own course has made hint an obleet of quite general suspicion. The aiscov ery of his treasonable communication with the enemy is said on good an tority to have happened in this wise : A soldier in one of the New York - Regiments, who had procured his dis charge, and came to the Capital for the purpose of getting his pay. men tioned to a gentleman in one of the public offices that there were suspi cions circumstances connected with Gem Stone's movements, and related the following incident: When he (the soldier) was on picket duty near Edwards's Ferry. some time sulosqnent to the Ball's Bluff affair, Gcn. Stone rode down near the Ferry, ac companied only by a servant. After sonic little time he.went to an unoccu pied house near, :.std bringing out a spyglass looked across the river. He then remounted and rode away, but shortly returned to the same house, and again hrought the glass intorequi sitiott, and seeming to discover the ob ject of his search, waved his hat as though communicating a signal. Di rectly about a dozen horsemen came out of the woods on the opposite side of the river. Gen. Stone, going to our pickets, re marked that these men want some thing, and suggested that some of them should cross and see what it might be. Five men volunteered to go on this service, and on reaching the Virginia shore, the Rebels proposed that they should remain as hostages while an equal number of their party crossed for the purpose of having an inter view with Gen. Stone, which proposal was accepted, and the Rebels accord ingly crossed and met Gen. Stone. They withdrew from the river bank near the house above named, and re mained in conference for some time. A soldier at the Ferry observed a seal ed packet passing between the rebels and Gen. Stone. One of the rebels remarked to one of the men who re mained as hostages, that they " "tad come down by appointment." The one who headed the rebel party was Captain Porter. It may be asked why it is that these facts did not come sooner to the knowl edge of the proper authorities. One reason is the ditticully. if not danger. involved in the inaking of charges by a private against an officer of high rank dill further, connnunica t ion has hoer' as faf. pos , ,ible pre \ entud I Gen. wyell the men of hi.; com mand and the capital. 11e, i, said to hay, manitCstcd a ner‘ - ous an N. iety in regard to this, as though fearing Ihal, some on.: who might ( , ) 1 / 1 0 coninmnd might know solnet :ling of his dc,in*. 1ZU11191%, or 'Ill; di:ill/y -ak)" have fur a long Finn: hcuut current ; hut have seemed to link',;ny mot., sub stantial foundation than thew. oil known rebellious proclivities of some of hi s relatives by marriage, and the fact I ha t, E= he manifested anxiety to protect known Secessionists in their right to property in human flesh.
