CAMP CURTIN, Harrisburg, I
June 10, 1861.
DEAR. GLOBE:—This evening Camp
Curtin was, apparently, all alive; look
where you would nothing could be
seen but companies manceuvreing ;
nothing heard but the shrill whistle of
the fife and the heavy sub a dub, dub,
of the drum, mingling with the clarion
voice of officers giving prolonged com
mands. 6l p, in. found the Parade
Ground filled with soldiers, marching
and countermarching; wheeling and
turning, till in duo time and without
confusion the long line of four Regi
ments parolled to each other, crossed
the ground, when " parade rest" rang
out loud and clear front the proper of
ficers ; while the music, collected, was
heard advaneingfrom the Guard house,
having in their rear a convict, guarded
by an armed squad. Prior to the con
vict's appearing, the commanding offi
cer read out loud and clear, -" Private
John Ritter has been court-marshalled
for insubordination, found guilty, and
sentenced to five days' close eonefine
ment on bread and Water only, and at
the expiration of that time to be
drummed out of Camp; which is now
about to be executed." This over,
private Bitter was marched at the
point of the bayonet in front of each
Regiment, following the music, and
then to the gate, where he was ex
pelled from the Camp. The sentence
being publicly consummated the com
panies were marched by the 0. S. to
their quarters.
There arc rumors of a meeting coin
ing off, in Camp, one of these days,
passing quietly, but rapidly round.
Thinking you, as some of your readers,
may have heard of the sad affairs, I
will express my opinion relative to the
degree of disaffection. There is no
doubt about there being quite a feeling
in Camp, caused by recruits being de
nied, by whom. Ido not say. Many
anticipated being furnished with uni
forms, and thought they would receive
pay at the end of Quell month; instead
of this, many are literally in rags, and
minus money.
Some companies have been here in
Camp, they tell me, six weeks, and, as'
yet, are not " sworn in," nor examined.
This, evidently, results only from the
negligence of the company officers.—
Idle Rumor says, but you know it is
poor authority, four or five companies
are organizing, secretly, for the pur
pose of fbreing their way out of Camp
and compelling the proper authorities
to either furnish, or dismiss, them.--
Whether there is really any such a plot
forming, I know not, and care less.
One thing is certain, if the field officers
are composed of the proper material,
we will make one uprising do this Camp.
If there is cause for complaint it is a
sad thing, but there is also a proper
way of adjusting the affhir and bring
ing the guilty parties to justice. Judg
ing from any demonstration that I
have seen, I would have no reason to
believe there is anything of the kind
progressing in Camp. lam told there
ore some four or five companies badly
disaffected.
On Monday sixteen in one of the
companie,s were mustered and arrested,
placed under guard and compelled to
clean the Parade Ground, at the point
of the bayonet. To-morrow they will
have, I understand, it hearing at Head
Quintero. I think in all probability
they will be allowed to leave their
Captain and connect themselves with
some other company. I understand
the difficulty is, the company is com
posed of Dutch and Irish; the Captain
being an Irishman, the different " na
tions" quarrelled, the Dutch thinking
the Captain.partial to the Irish l doubt
less a change will settle the whole dif
ficulty,
The Camp regulations are 4ntte good
particularly on paper; but I ant of the
opinion that there is not enough of the
Jackson in the commanding officer.—
Were I to take command of the Camp,
.1 would the first night furnish the sen
tinels with ball and cartridge, and or
der some six or ten coiling of various
I am . opposed to Making laws
and not obeying them.
Scott Infantry is about being formed
into a regiment, I ant told, having for
their. Colonel A No. 1 man, Captain
Gregg,- of Centro Co. There are sonic
fine companies forming the regiment.
The general health of the Camp is
good ; but few, comparatively, in the
Ifospital.
The 24 Michigan Regiment quar
tered in this Camp over night on their
way to Washington. They tyre a fine
set of boys and will doubtlegs he effi
cient troops.
