Another Skeleton Story.
This possesses an air of romance
equal to the " Gold Bug," or others of
those fabulous tales founded updn the
hidden treasures of Captain Kidd,
which have so alarmed and captivated
the youth of this - age, is told by the
Armstrong Democrat, as follows:
It is said that a man known by the
name of Hooks, residing in one of the
adjacent townships, while one day dig
ging a hole for a fence post, struck his
spade upon what he afterwards discov
ered to be the skull of a human being.
Mr. Hook being a gentleman of weak
nerve was a little appalled at first by
this ghastly sight, but resuming his
labor, succeeded in digging out the
skeleton, beneath which he found a
brass kettle containing some beads and
other relics, and also a small box with
in which ho found a paper on which
were words written in the French lan
guage. This writing ho afterwards
took to Freeport, and had it translated
by.the Catholic Priest then residing
there, who made out that it purported
to state the former residence of the
deceased, which was at Le Boeuf, in
Erie county, and that the treasures of
which he was possessed were secreted
in a certain place. Shortly after this
Mr. Hooks absented himself from his
family, and was not heard of in the
neighborhood for some time, causing
much grief to his family by this un
wonted neglect, and many surmises in
the neighborhood as to the cause of
his absence. However one pleasant
morning Mr. Rooks returned home,
enjoying the very best of health, and
has ever since been in the enjoyment
of such quantities of money as lead his
neighbors to infer that he availed him
self of the information conveyed by the
mysterious writing and has become
possessed of the wealth of the unfortu
nate Frenchman. The story is related
by a gentleman of undoubted veracity,
who is acquainted with Mr. Hooks and
his circumstances, and says that the
facts are substantially true as we have
stated them. We have no doubt but
that there are treasures buried through
the country, and that it is as likely
that Mr. Hooks should become pos
sessed of some of it as any other man;
and, " as it were," we think the story
quite plausible- and entitled to somo
credit.
A Loyal Regiment.
It is worthy of remark as somewhat
more, perhaps, than a mere coincidence
that Major Robert Anderson, now in
command of Fort Sumpter; Lieuten
ant A. J. Simmer, who within the
walls of Fort - Pickens, has defied the
secession forces of Florida, Mississippi
end Alabama; Captain J. B. Rickets,
of Fort Brown, Texas, who has refused
to surrender the post under his charge
to the rebel authorities and Captain
Bennett H. Hill, also of Texas, who
has displayed true loyalty and courage,
by refusing to obey the treasonable
order of Twiggs for the surrender of
the Federal property under his charge,
avowing his resolve to defend it to the
last extremity, and calling in reinforce
ments to aid him in doing so—all be
long to tho first regiment of the Uni
ted States artilery. As one of the best
educated and most intelligent branches
of the national military service, this
loyalty on the part of the artillery is
not without significance. It speaks
well for the morale of the whole regi
ment to find four of its officers, who
have been tried, thus proving them
selves equal to the various emergen
cie's of their respective situations, and
loyal to the banner of the Union.—
