THE HUNTINGDON GLOBE, A DEMOCRATIC FAMILY JOURNAL DEVOTED TO LOCAL AND GENERALNIA:WS, Sz,C,
aliisceltztweali,s 11,etiL5.
A DOMESTIC ItoitAseE.—The papers relate
the following story : One morning last week
a scene occurred on the train from New York
south, which fur a time created quite an ex
citement among the passengers. Among
those on the train was a lady about thirty
years of age. She was good-looking and at
tracted much attention from her air of mel
ancholy. At Princeton, a sun-burnt but very
handsome gentleman entered the car in which
the lady in question was seated. No sooner
had the parties glanced at each other than
the lady swooned. On recovering herself, it
appeared that the gentleman in question was
her husband, whom she had not seen for ten
years. He had started for California when
the gold fever broke out. The parties at the
time resided in Princeton, New Jersey. The
husband was taken sick and did not recover
for some time. Prior to his convalescence
the lady had gone South, in the capacity of
a governess, and wrote that fact to her hus
band, who unfortunately, did not receive her
letter. No answer to his letter reaching him,
be thought his wife was careless of his wel
fare. A feeling of home came over him, and
he returned to the States a few days ago.—
Meantime the lady had fallen heir to a large
Southern estate, left her by a member of the
family in which she had been teaching.—
These explanations being made, the once
united couple started on a Southern trip to
gether. There was a certainty of there be
ing at least two happy persons on that train.
'TIE CAPITOL .—This is the name of the
jaunty saucy little hat and feather worn by
the girls. It is decidedly the most becoming
fashion lately hit upon. It is juvenile, and,
however beautiful it looks on the young, the
effect is quite the contrary when worn by la
dies who have the traces of forty summers on
their brows. For young girls—not married
women and middle-aged ladies—it is the
prettiest and most tasteful thing we have
ever seen on their pretty heads. For all
girls with passably regular features and tol
erable comple:ilons, it is the very thing.—
It ought not, however, to be worn too much
on the face, which gives the wcarer a bold
look. The idea is to droop the hat and feath
er a little, so as not to loose sight of that mod
esty without which a woman, young or old,
is--leather and prunella.
MrsTEßtons Box.—The treasurer of Am
herst College, says the Spring,fieldßcpublican,
has lately received from Mr. Daniel Scars, of
Boston, a heretofore liberal benefactor of the
college, a small and carefully sealed box, with
the instruction that it is -not to be opened for
one hundred years, on pain of a forfeiture of
the which it contains. Speculation is at fault
as to the contents, and the reasons for the ac
companying condition. The shrewdest guess
is that the box holds deeds of real estate in
Boston, now under lease for one hundred years
but then to be transferred to the college.—
But let us be patient . till 1930, and then we
shall all know.
In order that fighting characters may know
fully the severe penalty which the law impo
ses upon brutality, we append a section from
the new Penal Code, passed by the Legisla
ture last winter ;
" If any person shall unlawfully and ma
liciously inflict upon another person, either
with or without any weapon or instrument
any grievous bodily harm, or unlawfully cut,
stab or wound any other person, every such
derson shall be guilty of misdemeanor, and
being convicted thereof, shall be sentenced to
pay a fine not excoeding one thousand dollars,
and to an imprisonment either at labor by
separate or solitary confinement, or to simple
imprisonment,-cot exceading three years."
Oir..—The discoveries of oil on the Mahe
ning, in the neighborhood of East Brook, are
creating considerable excitement. A num
ber of persons from Newcastle, and elsewhere,
are procuring sites. The editors of the Law
rence Journal, heard of one company in town
taking a lease yesterday, and we are informed
that the surface indications are fully equal to
any in Venango county. The oil procured
here is very fine, and those who have looked
into the matter have no doubt that it exists
in as great quantities in this county as any
where.—rittsbury
OUTRAGEOUS ADULTERATION OP FOOD.-A.
correspondent of the New York joutna/ (j .
Conmuyee, who signs himself an "Honest
Baker," says that the bakers of that city use,
as a cheap substitute for cream-of-tarter, a
substance, of which the deadly oil of vitrol is
the principal component. The statement is
almost too shocking to humanity to lie credi
ble. A baker who would use such au article,
knowing its character, onght to have his throat
rammed full of the infernal mixture, and be
burned at the stake with a fire made out of
his own Hour barrels.
Iy Gen. Sam Houston, in a published
letter to J. C. Smith, Esq., dated Austin,
Texas, July 31st, defines his position by say
ing that he has not witdrawn from the field,
as has been reported in some of the news
papers—that his name was presented by his
fellow-citizens without any agency of his own
—that he " does not weigh success against
principle, nor abandon a cause from motives
of policy"—and that if it is the wish of the
people to vote for him, they have a right to
do so, and if they do not it must be recollec
ted that he has not asked their suffrages.
Two Furs. Mooxs.—A strange astronomi
cal occurrence takes place during the present
month—that of two full moons. On the first
day of the month, at 11 o'clock and 33 min
utes, the moon's phase changed from the first
quarter to a full moon ; on the 31st of this
month there will be another change at 2
o'clock 57 minutes, from a first quarter to a
full moon. This occurrence, whicn rarely
happens, will be anxiously watched for.
