THE HUNTINGDON GLOBE, A DEMOCRATIC FAMILY JOERNAL, DEVOTED TO LOCAL AND .GENERAL NEWS, &C. tjaritta. Vir An apparently unsophisticated youth went into one of our saloons a few days since, and asked for something to appease his hurl_ ger. The keeper gave him a very good din ner, after which he said : " If you ever come up our way give me a call." " That won't do ; your dinner is a quarter!' " Oh 1 haint got any money, but if you ever come up to Allegary county, I'll give you a better dinner for nothing." " Why," said the keeper, cool." " Why, yes, I'm a cool chap, so much so that mother makes me stand in the pantry during tho hot weather to keep the meat front spoiling re-' " Bridget bring me the castor oil, the baby is sick." " It's all gone, warm, not a drop left." " All gone! why, we have not opened the bottle." " Sure you have had it every day, and I've seen you use it myself on your salad. " Why, you don't say we have been eating castor oil every day during the salad season." " Sure you have." "But did you not see the bottle was labeled castor oil ?" " Sure and I did, marm ; and didn't I put it into the castor every day ?" PATRIOTIC.-" Feller sogers," said a newly elected Lieutenant of militia, away down in Maine, " I'm all-fired obleeged to you for this shove up in the ranks you have given me.— Fellow sogers, I'm not going to forget your kindness soon, not by a darned sight ; and I'll tell you - what it is, I'll stick to my post like pitch to a pine board, so long as there's peace ; but as I go in for rotation of office, if we should come to blows with the Britishers, I'll be darn'd if I don't resign right off, and give every fellow a fair shake for fame and glory, and all that ere." An exchange has the following. A friend of ours the other day was accosted with the words : "Do you know the time, sir." Upon which he pulled out his watch and after consulting it, returned it to his pocket, cooly replying. "Yes, sir, I do," and then walked off leav ing the questioner abashed at his own ridi culous way of inquiring the time. ger A wag seeing a pretty girl standing by a house having a bill of "To Let" on it, inquired if Miss, "was to be let with the premises ?" No Sir-ee," replied Miss Pert. "I am to be let alone." re'm An Irishman who had blistered his fingers by endeavoring to draw on a pair of boots, exclaimed, "I believe I shall never get them on until I have worn them a day or two Aar A dun was somewhat taken back the other day, by the coolness with which a debt or said . : "Call on next Thursday, my dear sir, exactly at ten o'clock, and. I'll tell you When to call again." 12 " You had better ask for manners than money," said a finely dressed gentleman to a beggar boy who had asked for alms. " I asked for what I thought you had most of," was the boy's reply. gay:- A showman out west is gathering to gether curiosities for next season's campaign, and among other things be wishes to obtain ' The merchant who made a fortune without advertising." AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY :—The subscribers, your committee to examine the contents of a Salamander Safe, of Evans & Watson, after being exposed to a strong fire on the Fair Grounds for eight boors, respectfully represent— That after seven cords of oak wood and three of pine had been consumed around the Safe, it was opened in the presence of the committee, and the contents taken out, a little warmed, but not even scorched. Several Silver Medals heretofore received by the manu facturers, and a large quantity of documents were in the Safe, and came out entirely uninjured. The experiment satisfied us of the capacity of eafes of this kind to protect contents from any lire to which they may be e4osed. The Commitcce awarded a Diploma and Silver Medal. GEo. W. Gcntloara:—The Salamander Fire-Proof Safe of your manufacture, purchased by us from your Agent, Feu is & Garrett, of our city, some nine months ago, was severely tried by burglars last Saturday night, and although they had a sledge hammer, cold chisels, drill and gunpowder, they did not succeed in opening the Safe. The lock being one of "Hall's Patent Powder-proof," they could not get the powder into it, but drilled a hole in the lower panel and 'forced in a large chat ;e, uhleh was ignited, and al though the door, inside and out, showed the explosion not to have been a small one, it was not forced open. We sup pose they were the greater part of the night at work on it. We are much gratified at the result of the attempt to enter it, and if the above facts are of any service, you are at liberty to use them. Yours, truly, GREAT FIRE!-ANOTIIER TRIMIPII I: Tennessee. March 13th, 1539. Messrs. EVANS Sr, WATSON, Philadelphia: Gentlemen—lt affords me great pleasure to say to you that the Salamander Safe which 1 purchased of you in February, ISSS, proved to be what you recommended it— a sure protection from fire. My storehouse, together with several others, was burned to the ground iu March last.— The Safe fell through into the cellar, and was exposed to intense heat for six or tight hours, and when it was taken from the ruins and opened, all its contents where found to be in a perfect state, the books and the papers not icing injured any whatever. I can cheerfully recommend your Safes to the community, believing, as I do, that they are as near fire-proof as it is possible for any Safe to be made.
