A Good Sell.
Once, two ministers of the gospel were con
versing on extemporaneous preaching.
" Well," said the old divine, waxing warm,
"you are ruining yourself by writing sermons
and reading them off. Your congregation
cannot become interested in your preaching ;
and if you were called upon to preach unex
pectedly, unless you could get hold of an old
sermon, you would be confused."
The young divine used all his eloquence,
but in vain, to convince the old gentleman
that the written sermon expressed his own
thoughts and feelings, and, if called upon, be
could preach extemporaneously.
"As we are of the same faith," said the
young minister, " suppose you try me next
Sunday morning. On ascending the pulpit
you can hand me a text from any part of the
Bible, and I will convince you that I can
preach without having looked at the text be
fore I stood up. Likewise, I must be allowed
the samo privilege with you, and see who can
make the best of it.
The idea seemed to delight the old gentle
man, and it was immediately agreed upon.
On the following Sabbath, on mounting the
pulpit, his senior brother handed him a slip
of paper, on which was written : " And the
ass.opened his mouth and spoke," from which
he preached a glorious sermon, chaining the
attention of his delighed hearers, and charm
ing his old friend with his eloquence.
In the afternoon, the young brother, who
was sitting below the pulpit, handed his slip.
After rising and opening the Bible, the old
man looked sadly around—" Am I not thine
ass ?" Pausing a few minutes, he ran his
fingers through his hair, straightened his col
lar, blew his nose like the last trumpet, and
read aloud—" Am I not thine ass ?" Anoth
er pause in which a deadly silence reigned.
After reading a third time—" Am I not thine
ass?" he looked over the pulpit at his friend,
and in a doleful voice, said :
" I think I am, brother!"
Every plain girl has one consolation :
though not a pretty young lady, she will, if
she lives, be a pretty old one.
rfeß"A pretty face and handsome dress
often make a great belle ; but an enraged bull
sometimes makes a great beller.
glo'' Wisdom is greater than water ; for,
while the greatest ocean is but a sea, the wi
sest man is a seer.
Vir. A lady's home-dress ought to last a
long time ; she never wears it out.

ANOTHER TRIUMPH! " •

rhitaddxhia, Sept. 29,1859. -
To TEE PRESMENT OF TEIFI PENNSYLVANIA AGRICULTURAL
SOCIETY :—The subscribers, your committee to examine the
contents of a Salamander Safe, of Evans & Watson, after
being exposed to a strong fire on the Fair Grounds for eight
hours, respectfully represent—
That after seven cords of oak wood and three of pine
had been consumed around the Safe, it was opened in the
presence of the committee, and the contents taken out, a
little warmed, but not even scorched.
Several Silver Medals heretofore received by the manu
facturers, and a large quantity of•documents were in the
Safe, and out entirely uninjured.
The experiment satisfied us of the capacity of Safes of
this hind to protect contents from any tire to which they
may be exposed.
The Committee awarded a Diploma and Silver Medal.

Gentlemen:—The Salamander Fire-Proof Safe of your
manufacture, purchased by is from your Agent, Ferris &
Garrett, of our city, some nine months ago, was severely
tried by burglars last :Saturday: night, and although they
bad a sledge hammer, cold chisels, drill and gunpowder,
they did not succeed in opening the Safe. The lock being
one of "IlaWs Patent Powder-proof," they could not get
the powder into it, but drilled a hole in the lower panel
and forced in a large charge, which was ignited, and al
though the door, inside and out, showed the explosion not
to have beer_ a small one, it was not forced open. We sup
pose they were the greater part of the night at work on
it. We are much gratified at the result of the attempt to
enter it, and if the above facts are of any service, you aro
at liberty to use them. Yours, truly, . _ _
GREAT FIRE I-ANOTLIER TRIUMPH!!
IKNoxvrtra, Tennessee, March 13th, 1859.
Messrs. EVANS & WATSON, Philadelphia:
Gentlemen—lt affords me great pleasure to say to you
that the Salamander Safe which I purchased of you in
February, 1858, proved to be what you recommended it—
a sure protection from fire. My storehouse, together with
several others, - was burned to the ground in March last.—
The Safe fell through into the cellar, and was exposed to
intense heat for six or eight hours, and when it was taken
from the ruins and opened, all its contents where found to
be in a perfect state, the books and the papers not - being
injured any whatever. I can cheerfully recommend your
Safes to the community, believing, as I do, that they are
as near fire-proof as it is possible for any Safe to be made.
