THE HUNTINGDON - GLOBE, A DEMOCRATIC FAMILY JOURNAL, DEVOTED TO LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS, &C. THE . GLOBE. Huntingdon, Wednesday, Jan. 19, 1859 LOCAL & PERSONAL. BE-VUX WAxrie.o.—We are not in the habit of advertising for husbands, but we think it is truly advisable, when young ladies become so " bard up" for beaux, as to appeal to the printer to advocate their cause. Such is the case at the present time, and We are surprised that so many of our young men should so love the intoxicating bowl and rowdyism, as to forget the ladies entirely. We were re quested last week, to inform the young men of our town, that five beaux are wanted, to come well recommended. The ladies are all young, good looking, intelligent, and agree able. This is a capital chance for some of our young men, and we sincerely hope that they will avail themselves of the opportunity. For further information, apply to the ladies at their homes. It may not be amiss, on this occasion, for us to give the ladies a few words of advice. I.Adies, we want to see a reform in the young men of our borough, and if you would take more notice of them, and encourage them into your society more, there would be less drunkenness and rowdyism on our streets after nightfall. The young men would then have some place to pass the evenings, instead of visiting the taverns and lager beer saloons of our borough, and drinking sueb beverages as arc nova-days sold at these places. You have a mighty influence over them, and we think it is your duty to exercise that influ ence to a certain extent, and instead of cast ing off a_ young man when you see him reel ing and tottering along the streets for the fast time, under the cursing influence of " strychnine whiskey," or some other drug equally as bad, you should try to reform him. Go and talk to him, persuade him, tell him of - the evil consequences attending it, and if you can't reform him, no person else can. We say, then, after you hare used all your influence to no purpose, you are at liberty to discard him, as lust forever. The sugges tions above, brought forth what we have writ ten, and we candidly believe were such the case, we would not have to record so many eases of drunkenness every week. Ladies, think over what we have said, and try your hand at what we have been trying to effect for a long time, but in vain. We do not de spair yet, however, but hope to see this kind of human debauchery brought speedily to an end. AssArLT.----011 Wednesday night last, as Louis Shamir, a Frenchman, and a quiet, inoffensive man, acting in the capacity of hostler,. for N. Co., of the •4 Farme r 's Home," was passing along Wash ington street, he was met by two drunken ne groes, William Cook and John Hanson, who demanded whiskey of him. lie informe them that he had none, whereupon, they com menced a most brutal attack upon him, beat ing him in a most shocking manner, and bad it not been for the timely assi-tnnce of some of our citizens who were pa ss;11 Is,y, he would, no doubt, have been killed. Cook has long been known to our citizens, as a saucy, im pudent, and insulting blackguard, ready at all times to molest any person coming in his way. All such unmitigated, thieving scoun drels as Cook, should be banished from a re spectable community, and we hope all like villains will be speedily made away with in some way or other,-we don't care how, so we get rid of them. Cook and Hanson were ar rested next morning, and as Court was in session, they were brought .up fur trial, im mediately, and convicted of assault and bat tery. The Judge has not sentenced them yet. We trust, however, when he does, that be will have no mercy on them, but give them the fullest extent of the law, as Cook richly deserves it ten times over. A pistol and butcher knife were found on Cook after he was arrested, which proves conclusively, that he was out for something of the kind. Shar rar is recovering rapidly. "Sror-EN—A ITAtuaRLE HOUR Vl—Under this caption, the Philadelphia Evelliag Jour uat hits off a class or persons—time stealers —in a most graphic style. These despoilers are not an unusual class in our town, as else where. The remark has been made more than once since _this great world was set a-roi ling, that time is precious. It waits for no man On singing maidens and fighting men ---="fidwer gardens and baffle-fields—on joy and sorrow, hope and dispair, love and ha yed, the night falls, and the sun rises, with unsparing regularity. The minutes are very precious, every one of them. We cannot af lord to let theM drift unheeded by. The cur rent widens , and quickens for eternity's ocean, and we are afloat. There is work to do, and not more than enough • time to do it • Let sin and shame and sorrow be upon every one of us Whu wastes this: heavenly treasure. If any mortal be willing to incur the fearful responsibility of sloth,. his be the Settling account l But a weightier and gra ver charge is against him who squanders the time of others. The fragrant atmosphere of a good reputation surrounds him. His lips distil honey and breathe melody. Thinks a great deal about the weather, says all he thinks. how busy you are 1 Don't stop I And then an irregular fire of reminiscen ces, reflections, speculations, prophesies, and bearsays—all very sapient and surprising, no diiubt—until the brain reels, and the nerves quire., and patience oozes out in great angry drops of perspiration, and common courtesy becomes a heroism, and from the troubled soul goes up a sigh for a lodge in some vast wil derness, or inaccessible attic, with only one door, and that one bolted on the inside I We shut up in grated cells those who rob us of our money or goods. We knock down those who rob us of our reputation, or forev er "cut" and shun them. But we can do nothing with those who steal our time. We are at their mercy. Will they not pause on our threshold, and consider well before they turn our door latch ? -Court this week, is, not very numer ously attended.
