expressly for this Mork. Llama, all the other historical
writing of Mr. Goodrich, sink into insignilicaliee, wh•a
compared to this, the result of his riper and !miniver years.
It is admitted that one hundred dollars could not purchase
the same matter in any other shape, and the publishers
confidently expect, in consideration of the great literary
valne of the work, the large sum expended in preparing
it for the press, and the exceedingly moderate price at
which it is offered, that it will be favorably received by
every lover of good books. Many of our first scholars, di

given it their nnqualilled approbation and commendation,
which it richly deserves.

Books upon almost every other subject have been circu
lated among the people, except those relating to the very
interesting and important one of Natural History. The
books which have heretofore been published on this sub
ject. have been adapted to mere children, or to those who
made it a thorough study. Hence, very few of the millions
of readers in this country have, within their reach, any
thing satiskictory upon this subject. This indicates a
great and an obvious want. as no subject is more intensely
interesting, and none more improving, than that of the
living beings that people tie globe. This want we are con
