Thu 1f rrcnus G.►nnax.-1f you
want early vegetables, such as lettuce,
radishes, beets, cabbage, tomatoes, this
is your time to prepare your hot-bed,
and add frames. Manure is essential.
Well decomposed manure may be taken
to the spot where it will be needed, and
left in small heaps, while that for hot
beds should not be in so small heaps
that it will be chilled through, but it
should be kept in a stsite of fermenta
tion. As soon as a heap shows signs of
heating It should be turned over. and
.each turning will much improve its
quality. Plants which are growing in
Cold Frames.—lf the weather is very
Cold and the plants are frozen, it is not
necessary to remove the snow from the
frames, but a light fall of snow, follow
by mild weather, must be immediately
removed. Give air abundantly, as it is
the object to keep the plants ar hardy as
possible.
Hot-beds for raising seedings are to be
started about six weeks before the time
at which it will be safe to set out the
plants. Sashes should be got ready;
paint, if need, and re-place broken
lights.
Straw mats are of great use in cover
ing hot-beds and frames at night. There
are several ways of making them; they
should be a foot longer than the sash
and of its width and a half wider, so
that two mats may cover there sashes.
Coming of celery and roots in pits dp
now. At the time we write, the middle
of December, it seems as if this might
be delayed for some time.
Lettuce, where there is a demand for
early plant, may be forced in a hot-bed.
The bed should be excavated at, least 21
feet deep, and this be filled with fer
menting mnaure and covered with soil.
COST OF FENCEEL—Hero is a statement
which we suppose to be correct, although
it will astonish most of our readers: The
fences of the United States are estimated
to have cost more than the houses, cities
included, more than the ships, ves
sels and boats of every description whi
sail on the ocean, raaories, with all thM:
machinery, and more than any one class
of property, real estate excepted. These
are curious facts, but they are facts never
theless. The fences of New York are
put down at $144,000,000; those of Ohio at
*11.5.000,000, and Pennsylvania at $lOO,-
000,000. Divided out at this rate the
money invested in fences alone is more
than equal to the national debt. As
fences require to be renewed, on an aver
age, once in ten years, the annual cost to
the country is not far short of $200,000,-
000.
GOOD HAus.—After hams have been
smoked, take them down and thorough
ly rub the flesh part with molasses, 0
immediatelyapply ground and pOwder
ed pepper, by sprinkling on as !such as
will stick to the molasses, when they
must be hung up again to dry.. Hams
treated in this mauner keep.perfect
ly sweet for two or three years. This
must be done before the fly deposits her
eggs, for after that is done nothing will
stop their ravages. The above has been
practiced in our section for more than
twenty years. No soaking is necessary.
One pint of molasses and one or two
pounds of black pepper are suflicidut for
any ordinary family. Try this plan if
you want good sweet hams. So says the
Rural Nov Yorker.
CHICKEN enoLnn.A.—A farmer hi
Ohio says: 'tl lost some fifteen or six
teen.-of my hens last spring by the chol
era, and in all cases, their combs would
become pale and they looked l4nguid,
and had a.gfeat propensity to drink wa
ter profusely. I. thought I would try
an experiment, as I knew the fowl would
die anyhow, so I caught two of them
and held their mouths open, and poured
a teaspoonful of paregoric down each
one's throat, and threw them into the
garden, where they could get all they
could eat, but no drink, and the the
third day repeated it, Now they are
all well, and have gone to laying."
NEW WAY OF COOKING POTATOES.
—Wash and e the potatoes dry.—
Place them in a fiat-bottomed cast iron
pot on the back part of the stove, cover
ing the kettle with a close fitting iron
or tin cover. The steam of the • potato
is sufficient moisture for them. They
will cook in an hour and tea. minutes,
and are very nice and healthful.
CORN CROP OF 1870.—The corn crop
of the United States for 1870 was 1,100.-
000,000 bushels, a gain over las/ year of
more than five bushels to the acre. The
hog crop is a little over 20,000,000 tons,
1 per cent. less than that of 1869.
SNOW :13am.s.—To prevent balls of
snow on horses' feet. let the hoof and
fetlock be well cleaned, and then rub
with soft soap previous to their going
out in snowy.,Weather.
MINUTE 31Acemenv. —A correspond
eat writing from London says: "The most
extraordinary machine iu the exhibition
is, beyond question, the one for micro
scope writing. This enables a person to
write in the usual way, and to duplicate
his writing a million times smaller, so
small ; indeed, that it is invisible to the
naked eye, yet with a powerful microscope
become so plain that every line and dot
can be seen. The inventor Clain that
with this instrument he can copy the en
tire Bible twenty-two times in the space
of an inch. The Astor Library, I presume
could be transferred to a sheet of note
paper. Practically it . will be off great
service in preventing forgeries. WitiAme
of these machines a private mark can- be
put on bills so minute and perfect that the
forger can neither perceive or imitate it,
but the bank clerk or broker, knowing
where to look, can at once detect that, a
bill is genuine. The machine is the in
ventim of a Mr. Peters." ,
A DAUCIIITEII was born to the .wife of
Mr. Fred. Hoxie,. of Orneville, Maine, on
January 28th. A Bangor paper says this
is the fifth generation now living. The.,
child has four grandparents, five great

DR. SCHENCK
ADVISES CONSUMPTIVES TO GO TO
FLORIDA IN WINTER.
Having for the last thirty-fire yearsderoted my
whole tune and attention to the study of lung
diseeses and consumption, I feel that I understand
fully the course that ought to be pursued to re
store a tolerably bad case of diseased lungs to
healthy soundness. The first and most import.
ant step is for the patient to avoid taking cold,
and the best of all places on this continent for
this purpose in winter, is Florkia, well down in
the State, where the temperature la regale'', and
not subject to such variation as In more Mirth.
en" latitudes. Palatka is apoiut I can recom
mend. A good hotel ni kept there by Peterman.
Last winter I saw 'Several persons there whose
lungs had been badly diseased, but who, under
the beating influence of the climate and my med
icine, were getting well.
One hundred miles further down the river is a
point which I would prefer to Palatka, as the
thmperature ts more even and the air dry and
bracing. afellonville and 'Eatery:lth are located
there. .1 should give a deckletpreference to Mel.
lonville. It is two miles from river or lake, awl
It seems almost impossible to take told there.—
The tables in Florida might be better, and pa
tients complain at times but that Is a good sign.
as it indicates a return of appetite, and when this
Is the case they generally increase In flesh, and
the lungs must heaL
Jacksonville, Hibernia, Green Cove, and many
other places lu various parts of Florida, can be
safely recommended to consumptives In a inter.
My reasons for saying so are that patients are
less liable to take cold there than here, there is a
less even temperature, and It is not necessary to
say that where a consumptive person exposes
himself to frequent colds he Is certain to die
shortly. Therefore my advice Is, go well down
tot. tbo %tut* out of rite roach of provallll•6CAll.3i
aiuds and fogs. Jacksonville, or almost any oth
er of the localities I have named. will benefit
those who are troubled with a torpid liver, a dis
ordered stomagh, deranged bow el s, sore throat
or cough, but for those whose lungs are diseased
a more southern point is earnestly recommended.
For fifteen yearsitior to Ihitai , I was profession
ally in New lurk, Boston, Baltimore and Phila
delphia every week, where I saw and examined
on an average are hundred patients a week. A
practice so extensive, embracing every possible
phase of lung disease, has enabled sue to under
stand the disease fully, and hence, my caution in
regard to taldng cold. Aperson may take vast
quantities of - Schenck's Pula:ionic Syrup,Sea.
Sea
weed Tonic and Mandrake Pills," and yet die If
be does not avoid taking cost.
In Florida. nearly everybody Ls using Schenck's
Alandrake Pills, for the climate in more likely to
produce bilious habiti than inure northern lati
tudes. It is a well established fact that natives of
Florida rarely die of constiiption, esPeciall
those of the southern part. On the other lan d,
In New England, ope-third at least, of the popu
lation die of this terrible disease. I/1 the Middle
States it dues not prevail so largely, still there are
ninny thousauds of casts there. What. a VII.St
percentage of life would be saved If consump
tives were as easily alarmed in regard to taking
fresh cold as they are about scarlet fever, small
pa, &c. But they are not. They take a hat they
Germ a little which they are credithial
enough to believe sill wear off in a few days.—
They pay no attention to it, and hence It lays the
foundation for another and another still, until the
lungs are diseased beyond all hope for cure.
My envier to persons whose lungs are affected
even slightly is, to lay a stock of Schenck's Put
motile .*ru Schenck's Seaweed - Tonic and
• Schenck's Mandrake Pills and go to Florida. I
recommend these particular medicines because I
API thoroughly acquainted with their att ac ic"- I
know that where theare used in ct Ord-
ance with my direc t ions they will s d tri o

that is required. This accomplished, nature will
do the rest. The physician who prescribes for
cold, cough or night-sweats, and then advises the
patient to walk or ride out every day, will besure
to have a corpse on his hands before long.
My plan is to give my three medicines, in ac
cordance with the printed directione, ptMan drak ei
some cases where a freer use Of the
Pills Is necessary. My object Is to give tone to
the atomach—to get up a good appetite. It is al
ways a good sisal when a patient begins to grow
h . I have hopes of such. With a relish for
and* the, gratification of that relish comes
good blood,„end with it more flesh, is Then) cose
ly followed by a healing of the lungs. the
cough loosens and abates, the creeping chills and
clammy night -sweats no longer and
annoy, and the patient gets well provided provided he
avoids taking cold.
Now there are many consumptives who have
not the means to go Le Florida. The question
may be asked, is there no hope for such? Cer
tainly there is. My advice to such Is, and ever
has been, to stay in a warm room during the win
ter, with a temperature of about sevetnydegrees,
which should be kept regularly at that point, by
means of *thermometer. Let such a patient take
his exercise within the limits of the room
walking up and down as much as his ameni
will permit, in order to kelp up a healthyelre
non of the blood. I have cured thousands by
this system, and can do so again. Consumption
is as easily cured as any other disease if it is take
en in time, and the proper kind or k•th .ftent is
Wrath& The fact stands undisputed on record
that Schenck's Pulmonlc Syrup; Mandrake Pills.
'and Seaweed Tonic have cured eery many of
what seemed to be hopeless Wes of consumption.
Go where you wi ll , you will be almost certain to

e very of dath bY Pe.
So far as the Mandrake
• nits are concerned,
everybody should keep a supply of them °ahead.
They act on the 'leer better tM,n calomel, and
leave none of its hurtful effects behind. In Lac*
they are excellent in all cases where apurgative
medicine Is required. It you have too
freely of fruit and diarrhoea ensues, a dose of the
Mandrakes will Cure yea. If yOU are Subject to
sick headache, take a dose of th e Maadrakes and
they will relieve you in two hours. If you would
obviate the effect of a change of water, or the too
free indulgence in fruit, take one of the Man
drakes every night or every other night, and you
may then drink water and eat watermelons,
pears, pple!, plums,

or corn, without
the risk of being made sick by th.m.e , Thee will
