We take the liberty further .of suggesting to the Council the expedi fancy of securing in addition a light work. ling engine, either by repair of the old manes, or by purchase of a new one, which, in ease of fires, can be run into allies, yards and gardens, sonvenient to wells and cisterns. audi an engine, with ac companying base, is what is most needed in our town, and in nine cases out of ten will do more service at fires than the bast steamer or 'notion engine. In case of fire are have largely to rely on pumps and cis. Erna for a supply of water, and a light engine could be promptly run direct to these supplies, when larger ones would be practically undoes. Bowen, the proprietor, taking direct charge of the editorial management, assisted by a strong editorial staff. Mr. Tilton is a brilliant journalist, wielding a sharp, trenchant, caustic , pen, but has a bad habit of making "hobbies" of pet theories, with a decided leaning to what he is pleased to call "liberal christianity," and an ignoring of essential, features of orthodox religous faith. These peculiari ties of Mr. Tilton were the more dan gerous by reason of his brilliant articles and the commanding influencii - .which the enormous circulation of the ItanteeNherr gave him. Hence the change in editor ship will be welcomed - by the friends of the paper as an aegiurof a more conserv iative tone in the most potent and influen tial religous journal of the country. The Ifineresnewr, while essentially a relig ous journal, represents no particular de nomination, giving a fair hearing to all, and besides claims the privilege of dealing boldly with all political and social prob lems challenging public attention. The first No. under the new management has contributions from Charles Sumner, Sena tor Wilsou, Vice President Colfax, Rev. ROTHERMELL'S PAINTING. —The diffi culty about the exhibition of Rothermell's great Painting of the . Battle of Gettys burg has been adjusted. It turns out that Mr. Rothermell contracted to deliver the Painting to the State on the let of July, 1871. Until that date, it remains his private property, with a right to exhib it it where and when he pleases. We un derstand further that under the original contract Mr. Rothermell was to paint several smaller battle scenes, representing different portions of the same field, as a border to the large painting. Subse quently it was thought this would mar the general effect of the picture, and the artist agreed to make separate paintings ot the scenes originally intended for the border, without extra charge—the Committee agreeing that he should be coaspensated in part by the proceeds of exhibitions of the main picture, after completion. The arrangement seems to have been a judici ous one, and should be fairly carried out. The painting now on exhibition is eon— ceded to a magnificent work, in every re spect creditable to the artist. D. McCon augby. Esq., of this place, was ono of the committee who contracted with Mr. Roth- errocll, being at the tame the Senator from this district. BADLY BunZIED.—A child, (aged about five months,) of Mr. Pius Miller, in Ber wick township, Adams county, wassevere ly burned, a few days since, under the following circumstances: The parents left the child for a few minutes to procure cabbage in the garden, and had been there but a few minutes, when the screams of the child were heard. Upon Mrs. M. en tering the dwelling, she found the•clothes of the child were on fire, caught from the sparks of the stove. The flames were not extinguished until the child was badly burned about the left side and arm. The services of a physician were summoned, under whose treatment the little sufferer is doing as well as could be expected un der the circumstances.—Hanewer Citizen. A DEER BILLED.—We learn from the York Republican that a deer weighing 104 pounds was shot by Mr. Leas, in Wash ington township, York county, on Sunday last. It had been started above Bei)i Ifra. vile on Saturday, and made its way to'the Pine Hill on Bermudian Creek, where it remained that night, and on the next day it was seen grazing in a grain field near by, when a party of hunters went in pur suit and succeeded in bringing down their 'game on John Kochenour'i3 farm. WHAT ADVERT/SING DOE&—We have several times noticed the fact that Dr. lielmbold, of New York, the wealthy Druggist, whose business palace is cue of the notable institutions on Broadway, is one of the most liberal and systerhatic advertisers in the country. Starting in life poor, 4ie izae amassed a large fortune, but continues to advertise as heavily as ever, regarding it as the secret of his sue., cess. The New York Sun, of SaturAlaY l in noticing the appearance of the Dr's. magnificent sleigh and team in the Park, says the harness alone cost $4,000, being gold mounted, and the buffalo robes $lB5O. He owns valuable real estate, and is worth 1 several zillions of dont" ne advertises in over 8,000 newspapers in different RA' of the, Ncountry—pays •liberally • and promptly—and the..consequence is;his , orders re from $BO,OOO to $4O, in a single day: Dr. Helmirold's theory is that when a miwyktssoolis to sell aid wants people to 4u3' thee; to a Figiapest and surest road to success, is to use printer's ink freely at any and all cost—that every dollar spent in advertising comes back ten-fold; wilaile on the other bawd, the sil liest of all follies is, for a man to open a place of buqiness, stock it with goods, and then quietly sit down waiting for people to come and _buy, instead of making known to everybody, by liberal and systematic advertising, what he has to sell—lest IT coax somirrstrao!
