link once completed, there can 1w no
doubt as to an extension westward in the
direction of Hagerstowh, to connect with

THE NIGHT AITZS cmtairmAs
C=E!
'Twas the night after Christruss, when all through
the house
Every soul was abed, and still as anomie :
Those stockings so late In St. Nicholas' bare
Were empty of all that was eatable there ;
The darlings had duly been tucked In their beds,
With very full stomachs, and pains in theirheads ;
I was dozing away In my new 'cottoircap,
And Nancy was rather far gone In a nap,
When ouuathe nursery rose such a clatter,
I sprang friummy,aleep, crying, "What Is the mat
terr#
I flew to each bedside—still half In a doze—
Tore open the curtains, and threw off the clothes;
While the light of the taper served clearly to
show
piteous plight of those objects below:
For what to the land lather's eyes 'hold appear
But the little pale face Of each little dent
For each pet that had enutuned• itself tall as a
tick \
I knew In a moment now ten like old Nick.
Their isicises weer rapid, their breathings the
same;
What their stomachs ejected mention by
name:
Now turkey, now stuffing, plum-pudding, o
course,
And custards, and crullers, and cranberry sauce;
Before outraged nature all went to the wall,
A r es, loifypops, fiapdoodle, dinner and all.
Like pellets which urchins fain popguns let fIY,
Went figs, nuts, and ruins, jam, Jelly, and pie
Till each error of diet was brought to my view,
To the shame of mamma and Santa Claus too.
I turned from the sight. to my bedroom stepped
back,
And brought opts vial marked "Duly. Ipecac.
When my Nancy exclaimed; (or their sufferings
shocked her,
'Don't you think you had bett,er,love,,run for a
doctor"
I ran; and was scart*ly back under my roof
When I heard the sharp clatter of old Jalap's
hoof:
I might say that I scarcely had turned myself
round
When the Doctor came Into the room with a
bound.
He Ivas covered with mud from his heed to his

And the snit he had on was his very worst snit;
