Sometimes a chrbitmas motto may be
needed over archway or entrance, or in
grandmarurua's warm corner where the
big chair stands. It is easily made by
cutting the required letters ont of stiff
paper, and lightly sewing on - bits of,
Ar.sor Vita, taking care that the.., letter's
edge be not ton sharply defined. Another
way of covering the forms is to glue moss
Upon them; and still another , :though,,it•is
traitorous to suggest it) is to paint the
paper letters with glue, and immediately
sprinkle on a quantity of tine evergreen
clippings scarcely larger than rose thorns.
Then there's the Christmas tree. Nev
er omit that; Let it be large or small,
richly lighted and laden, or only daintily
pricked off with candies,. Caudle/I, and fol
lies—but a Christmas tree let there be.—
ik•nilock, cedar, pine, and spruce are suit
ed to the purpose; but prettier and firmer
than all is the species known as the white
pint•--so rich a green, and, withal, so
tight and feathery that, lit with its hun
dred tapers, it looks like a Christmas
rbuntaiu coverwl with sparkle' of sun
light .
Above all things, see to it that little
ones are made happy on Christmass eve.
Gather them around the dOmestic hearth
—tell them the old, old story.of_the Shep
herds who watched their flocko-by night,
—the Babe of Bethlehem, and God's great
'ove to man. Let there be loving iuemen
toes of affection between parents and
children, brothers and sisters, friends and
relatives. Let the "old folks" become
children again, while the little folks have
life's pathway lighted up with glad mem
ories of Christmas eve. Make eime su
premely happy for at least one day in the
year. Nor stop there. Let your sympathy
Go ont broadly and deeply on Christmas
eve. and while you light up your own
homes with kindly greetings and innocent
mirth, ,ee to it that those, who feel the
pinching pressure of poverty, share the
bounties wherewith Providence has bless
ed you. Remember the poor.
To all our patrons we extend the greet
ing of the season, with hearty wishes for
a "Merry Christmas."

31n. EnrrOnet--Having beeu invited to
attend the examination of the Preparatory
Department of Penasylvania College, you
will permit me, through your, paper, to
communicate my impressions. Ido this
the more readily, as the people of Gettys
burg and vicinity do not appreciate the
advantages of education, thua brought to
their very doors. The Preparatory De
partment seems to have started cut on a
new and more prosperous career and every
thing connected with it indicates an In
stitution of high grade. Under the gen
eral superintendence of Prof. Bentman, a
degree of order and regularity has, been
maintained which is highly creditable.
Residing as he does in the building, he is
brought in constant contact with the
pupils, and parents may have the aasur
ance that their children are under a good
home influence.
The examinatilnul evinced thorough
work on the part of the Woollen., and a
more than ordinary degree of ililigence on
the part of the pupils. Meagre. Brown
and Richards are entitled to the thanks of'
all friends of the School and College, for
their earnestness and fidelity in their re
spective departments.
Patrons in the town and county, in fact
throughout the Lutheran Church, should
know, that in facilities for thorough in
struction, or for good Christian influence,
the Preparatory Department, under its,
present management, is inferior to no in
stitution of the kind in the State. Under
such management, the School in a short
time must command the 'confidence and
patronage of all friends of Education, and
its founders designed it, a School
of , high grade, where young men might re
ceive the beet possible training for busi
ness or for College. X

Among the _various recently organized

OM Of filo flat to publish a report of its
anniversary exercises, aad to lay before
the Christian public of,. ous4 county,
tbrought the widely-read columns of the
"Star and Sentinel," a statement of its
operations during the year. This state
ment is exceedingly satisfactory to sal true
friends of the Bible Cause, exhibiting as
it does, convincing proof of the fact that
no one in that vicinity is to be left Without
the Sacred Scriptures who desires to pos

It is cheering to see, from this published
account, how pleasantly evangelical Chris
tians, of all denominations, have united
in this good work. The Bible Society has
often Lipp proved a bond of union among
the fdflowers of Christ, and, In their
combined efforts to disseminate the divine
word, those who have been comparative
strangers to one another have been taught
lessonsof charity towards one another

A bundle of toys he had dung on his back.
And he looked like a peddler just opening his

His eyes, how they twinkledl his dimples, bow

His cheeks were like muss, his nose like a cherry
His dear little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was whitens the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed like a bowifull of
Jelly;
He was chubby and plitnib, a light Jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him In spite of myself.
A wink of lilt eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
