To PREVENT HENS FROM SCRATCH

Inch or so of the extreme ends of the
wires, so that they will catch in the

WINTERING YO - UNG TRESS FOR
_Spume Pidarrnio.—lt has often been
asked whether spring or fall planting
igv fruit tress or plants, but if intended
to order from a distance, I would advise
you to order them in the fall, and heel
ilastikin over winter, in a dry sheltered
spot; in.,this way they will then be handy
to plant its Soon as the ground is in a
good condition, but if intended to pro-
cure them of a home nursery, you may
save that trouble, as you can order them
ti r spring. and plant them as soon as

LOW HORN IN CATTLE.—HoIIow

horn- , it is said may be cured
,by •ilma i follegging prescription: Take

egar. until the mustard is thick as sweet
cream, put half in each ear, working it
np as far the ears as can convenient

in tiiree hours, give it another dose;
another remedy which has been recom
mended'"ery highly by some veterinary
men is to bore the horns of cattle which
are effected with it.
RERRIEr FOR RAIIIIITS GNAWING
Taims.—Let me repeat, that there is a
remedy to prevent rabbits killing young
fruit trees in the Nursery or Orchard;
fine young fruit trees have been ruined
by rabbits gnawing them. Take thick
old slack lime, and thin it with tobacco
water, and White wash them in the fall,
,around the trunk as far up as a, rabbit:
can reach.
WHEN TO SET 'ilENl3.—The Poultry
Bulletin published by the New York
State Poultry Society, gives expression
to the following opinion.
"It is advisable to set a hen at night,
and without a light, if she be a timid
one. ' Eggs sprinkled with water on the
14th, 17th and 20th day after they are
set will rarely have dead chickens in
them at the end of the time for incuba
tion."
TIIE RAPID DISAPPEARANCE OF OUR
Fonasra—The rapidity with which the
forest,. of America are disappearing is one
of the striking facts of the day, and
yet few t.e,m zo need it. It has been sta
ted that the 'Name forests have already
beoitereft of almost the entire old growth
f tree's. New York, whielh, twelve years
.g. 3. exported large quantities of lumber,
lists now become an_importer from Canada
Triti the West. In the year 1889 the
.moilut of timber cut in the three States of
he Noithwest, viz., Michigan, Minnesota
Wiseonsin, was the enormous sum of
2e1. 0 29,:155'feet. To . obtain this 88.1,032
or 1380 square miles, were stripped
fore As. It is estimated that in
o -rates there are remaining about fif
' eell and a half million acres of timber
t- nut. which, it is computed, will yield
an 32,1182,500,000 feet of timber. At
the present increased rates of consump
tion this will last about twenty years.
We must then look to the Pacific coast
and to replanting for future supply. Com
ing nearer Mime, it is found that even in
t mountain country, like Albemarle coun
ty, Va., timber, is growing quite scarce .
though the county is without any conside
rable town `within its limits. In lower
Virginia, where the timber is not particu
larly good, parties of Northern lumbermen
have been for some years denuding the
forests. Turning to the great area be
tween the inhabited .portion of the Pacific
States and /he population of the Mississip
pi Valley, the growth of timber is sparse
and small.. There are long slopes of pm
iris, and evenmountains, without a shrub

L'iriaRSTINIbTO TER Ltrars.—A bal
loon letter received at Bordeaux discus
see Parte fashions. Quiet colors are in
favor. and the use of jewels is dispensed
with. This is a delicate homage paid to
the mourning and grief for those who have
lost friends and kindred. "Paris," the
writer matet.a.., in spite of adversity,
"sill not cease to dictate to the whole
world the supremi- laws of elegance and
good taste." Victor Hugo might have
written that sentence; but only some
young slim with flowing tresses could
lutve written air: ',Taking advantage of
the flight of certain personages who had
gray, thin or red hair, and who inflicted
on fhabion their indispensable false hair,
our Parhadu ladies have at axe restored
to liberty gheir own looks, to knig hidden
under the ) despotie, artificial chigimi.—
Brown plaits, carefully smoothed down,
light ringlets, at once graceful and natur
al, have alone adorned for some days the
delicate and pretty heads of onr young
ladies, who are delighted to have their
most beautiful adornment restored to
them.

ADVISES CONSUMPTIVES TO GO TO

In Florida. nearly est:1)1:0(4 is usitg.: Scseiick's
Mandrake 'Fills, fur the climate to moue likely to
produce billousiethits titan mote northern lati
tudes. It is a well established fact that natives of
Florida rarely die of comiumption, especially
those of the southern part. On the other hand,
In New England, one-thlriL'at least. a the pow].
lation die of this terrible disease. In the Middle
States It does not prevail so largely, still there are
Many thousands of eases there. What a sled
percentage of life would be saved if (must't',
Lives were as easily alarmed in regard to taking
fresh cold as they are about scarlet fever, small
pox . Hut they are They take what they
terms little cold, which they are croltilous
enough to believe will wear off in a few days.—
t They Pay no attention to it, and hence It lays the
foundation fur another and another still, until the
lungs are diseased beyond all hope for cure.
My advice to persons whose lungs are affected
even slightly Is, to lay a stock of Schenck's Put.
Mimic Syrup, tichenek's &welted Intik and
Schenck's Mandrake Pills and go to Florida. I
recommend these particular medicines because I
am thoroughly acquainted with their action. I
know that where they are used in strict accord
ance with my directions they wW do the work
that is required. This accomplished, nature will
do the rest. The physician who prescribes for
cold, cough or night-sweats, and then advises the
patient to walk or ride out every day, will be sure
to have a corpse on his hands before long.
My plan is to give my three medicines, in ac
cordant* with the printed directions, except in
some cases where a freer use of the Mandrake
Pills is necessary. My object Is to give tone to
the StOnmelt—t.o get up a good appetite. It is al
ways a good sign when a patient begins to grow
hungry. I have hopes of such. With a relish for
food and the gratification of that relish comes
good blood, and with it more flesh, which is close
ly followed by a healing of the luness. Then the
cough loosens and abates, the creeping chills and
clammy night -sweats no longer prostrate and
annoy, and the patient gets well, provided he
avoids taking cold.
Now there are many consuniptivas who have
not the means to go to Florida. The questitai
may be asked, Is there no hope for such? Cer- I
Minty there is. My advice to such Is, and ever
has been, to stay In a warm room during the win:
ter with a temperature of about soyenty degrees- -
which should be kept regularly at that point, by
means of a thermometer. Let such a patient take
his exercise within the limits of the room by
walking np and down as much as his strength
will permit, lu order to keep up a healthy circula
tion of the blood. I have cured thousands by
this system, and can do so again. Consumption
Is as easily cured as any other disease if it is tak
en lu time, and the proper kind of treatment is
pursued. The fact stands undisputed on record
that Schenck's Pulmonlc Syrup, Mandrake Fills,
and Seaweed Tonic have cured very many of
what seemed to be hopelesseasesof consumption.
(to where you will, you will be almost certain to
find sumo poor consumptive who has been rescu
ed iron the very jaws of death by their use.
tio far as the iltandraice Pills are concerned,
everybody should keep a supply of them on hand.
They act on the liver better than calomel, and
leave none of its hurtful effects behind. In fact
they are excellent In all cases where a purgative
medicine is required.. If you hare partaken too
freely of fruit and diarrhuta ensues, a dose of the
Mandrakes will cure you. If you are subject to
sick headache, take a dose of Hie Mandrakes and
they will relieve you in two hours. If you would
obviate the effect of a change of water, or the too
free indulgence in fruit, take one of the Man
drakes every night or every ether night, and you
may then drink water and eat watermelons,
pears, apples, plums. peaches or corn, without
the risk of being made sick by them. They will
protect those who live in damp situations against
chills and fevers. Try them. They are perfectly
harmless. They can do you good only.
1 have abandoned my professional visits to Bos
ton and New York, but continue to see patients
at my ounce , No. 15 N. SIXTH Street, Philadel
phia, every Saturday, from 9A. IL, to 3Y. Si.—
Those who wish a thorough examination with the
gespirometer will be charged five dollars. The
HespiroMeter declares the exact condition of the
lungs, and patients can readily learn whether
they are curable or not. But I desire It distinctly
understood that the value of my medicine de
pends entirely upon their being taken !strictly ac
cording to directions.
In conclusion, I will say that when persons take
my medicines and their systems are brbnght into
a healthy condition thereby, they mead so liable
to take cold , yet no one with diseased lungs can
bear a sudden change of atmosphere without the
liability of greater or less Irritation of the bron
chial tubes.
Full directions In all languages accompany my
medielnes. so explicit and clear that any one can
lisc them akt.hout consulting me, and can he
