Under the above title our townsman, Rev. Dr. Bchmucker, has published anew volume in the interest of Christian Union. More than thirty years ago Dr. B. pub. lished a "Fraternal Appeal to the Ameri can Churches," designed to bring abOut more intimate union of evangelical Chris: tians, irrespective of denominational diff •erences, which aCthe time attracted much attention by reason of its scholarly char acter and christiau spirit, and largely con tributed to the formation of the Evangeli cal Alliance which met in Europe, and to which Dr. S. was an accredited delegate from the United States. The arrange ments for a meeting of the .Allialice in New York this fall (postponed by reason of the European war,) induced Dr. Schmuck er to prepare the present work, which, in addition to the substance of his original Appeal, presents a modified scheme for Christian union, adapted to the changed relations of evangelical denominations. It is an exceedingly interesting volume, and should command the attention of all who deplore the antagonisms prevailing as betwen different branches of the Chris. thin Church. The design is not to form a new church, nor to dispense with denom inational peculiarities, but to bring about a more intimate correspondence and fra ternal union, by means of a common dele gated body harmonizing upon the essen tials of the Christian system common to orthodox churches. The book is brought out in attractive style by the publishers, Messrs. Randolph & Co. The New York Observer (Prebyterian) in its issue of Sep tember 22, thus notices it: Rev. Dr. Bchmucker, one of the fathers of the great Evangelical Alliance move ment of the age, has just brought out a small volume (Randolph &Co., publishers) that should arrest the attention of all thoughtful and active Christians. It is on "The True Unity of Christ's Church," in which he demonstrates the existing essen tial unity of the Church, and proposes a plan for the external union of all evangel ical churches on the general basis of the Alliance. We are deeply interrested in the views here presented, and we ask min isters and intelligent laymen of all branch es of the Church to get the book and read it. It is one of the signs of the times. The Church is one. • INJCICCTION.—On Wednesday last, on petition of Martin Steffy, Burgess of the .
