Lurnizzynaz 812ifiii4.11Y.—We have on
our table, the Catalogue of "Lutherville
Female Seminary," for 1870. This In

miles from Baltimore, on the line of the
Northern Central RailrOad, and is under
charge of Rev. Dr. Sadder, assisted by a
corps of efficient Instructors, including
Rev. P. M. Bikle, a graduate of the In

has a wide-spread and deserved reputation
as a successful educator, and it is not sur

should be in a flourishing condition.

SELECT Pic-Nic.---On Morning last a
pleasant little Fishing Party and Pic-Nic
came off at Gitt's dam, near New Oxford.
A few gentlemen from town took the five
o'clock train for Conowago, where they
were joined by a party of gentlemen from
New Oxford, to whom complimentary in
vitations had been sent. The morning
was spent in testing the fishing grounds,
after which the party sat down to a mag
nificent collation, on the banks of the
stream, served up by Lieut. James Hersh,
of the "Washington House," of New Ox
ford, whose merits as a caterer are so well
known. The party returned to Gettys
burg in the •noon train. The affair, we
understand, - was glitten up under the
superintendence of Mr. Keller Kurtz, of
New York, temporarily on a visit to
this place.
FATAL SHOOTIN6.7-011 Saturday morn
ing, last Mr. Samuel Fitzgerald, of Hunt
ington township, was accidently killed by
a comrade, Mr. Wesley Stevens, of Tyron
township, while on a gunning expedition.
They were hunting together, and coming
across a squirrel on a tree, both fired
simultaneously, being within a few yards
of each other. Both guns missed fire, and
Stevens was in the act of examining or
replacing the cap on his gun, which wai
resting on-his arm, when by some means
the hammer fell, exploding the cap, and
sending the entire charge of shot ' into
Fitzgerald's left side. The latter was re
moved to Mr. C. Myers' residence, and
lived five or six hours, entirely exhonerat
ing his comrade from all blame, the shoot..
ing being purely accidental. Fitzgerald
was aged about 35 years and leaves a wife
and two children.
GRASSIIOPPERB.—We have information
from a gentleman just returned from a trip
through Carroll and Baltimore counties,
Md., that the grasshappers literally cover
ed the ground at places, and that these in
sects were devouring the clover and almost
everything else that was green. They
have already eaten up the blades of corn,
and were working their way into the ears
of corn—the tops already eaten off. It is
expected that nearly the entire crop of
corn will be destroyed.. Even fence rails
are partially eaten. Several farmers stat
ed that their young orchards were begin
ning to suffer, a number of trees being
already destroyed, the bark eaten off. The
farmers are becoming alarmed at the num
ber of grasshoppers passing over their
farms. We believe that in some sections
in our own county they are becoming very
numerous, troublesome, and destructive.
B IINSTROXII.--Bnnstroke has been :Liar;
mingly prevalent this summer in all the
large cities, and even* the rural diatricts.
The heat has been both • exceedingly in
tense and long continued, and its depress
ing power, acting with cumulative effect, ,
has predisposed many to this sudden and of
ten fatal malady. All whose duties require
expose to the sun should be-on the guard.
A damp cloth, worn in the crown of the
hat, is recomended as a preventive. In
case of an attack
. ff sunstroke, the ap
plication of, cold to - the head and chest,
friction of the extremities, and the admiii
istration of stimulants such as brandy and
ammonia will be found serviceable. Place
the patient in a recumbent position •in
the shade, where there is a freecirculation
of fresh air, and at the same time dis
encumber him of everything that could in
any way interfere with either eacidation
or respiration.

THADDEUS STEVENS.—Hon. A. K. Mc-
Clure, of Philadelphia, last week delivered
the annual address before the literary
Societies of Washington and Jefferson
College, on Life: the Meat and the Actual.
Col. McClure illustrates his theme by re
ference to the career of own best known
statesmen. He thus refers to Mr. Stevens:
"My life has been a failure," were the
sad words I heard uttered by Thaddeus
Stevens when he was setting his house in
order for the inexorable messenger. He
was the great Coinmoner of the Nation's
sorest trial, and had witnessed the triumph
of his earnest and consistent efforts for the
disenthrallment of the oppressed. He was
content when braving popular ignorance
and prejudice against education and free
dom; but when he became the acknowl
edged leader of the House, and saw the
substantial success of his cherished princi
ples, his ideal life was not fulfilled. To
himself his life appeared as does the statue
fashioned to rest upon some high pinnacle.
It seems ungainly, ill-proportioned and
wanting in symmetry and harmony; but
as it rises to the distance from which it
was designed to be viewed, its awkward,
shapeless lines disappea!,. and its
and beauty win the admiring gaze of r i a a
multitude. He had his measure of infirmi
ties, but there have been few so sincerely
devoted to their convictions, and who
would so willingly forego honors and ap
-planse for conscience sake. When pos
terity shall read of him, it will be as one
of the grand central figures in the
rama of a nation's redemption, his
frailties will be unreeorded—the •, on
tribute the historian pays the fallibility of
men whose names are immortal. I thought
that he, of all our statesmen, bad most
nearly realized the hopes which inspired
his noblest efforts; but he had learned the
lesson that the ideal destiny" of every life
points to the unattainable. How much he
dreamed, and how keenly he lamented
that he only dreamed, there aro' few pre
pared to tell."
ARREST.—On Thursday evening, the
4th inst., while a dance was in progress at
Smith's tavern in Franklin township, a
difficulty occurred between Messrs. Adam
P. Newman and Franklin. Kane, during
which the former received some five or
six ugly cuts in the arm, face, and neck
from a knife in the hands of the latter.
Mr. ,Newman's wounds were dressed, and
he came to town on Tuesday, to make in
formation before Justice Cover. A warrant
was placed in Sheriff Klunk's hands, who,
in view of Kane's reputation and lawless
ness, summoned several assistants and pro
ceeded to his residence about dusk. Kane,
getting wind of the Sheriff's presence,
slipped out of the house and made fpr the
mountains. A chase ensued, and about
midnight, the party came across Kane at
Miltenberger's Saw-Mill, some six miles
from the starting point, where he had laid
down and fallen asleep: Sheriff Klunk
and assistants secured the prisoner, and
he is now is jail. We know nothing about
the facts of the case beyond the statement
made by Mr. Newman to Justice Cover—
that Kane provoked the difficulty, in con
sequence of an old grudge and in pursu
ance of previous threats. We niderstand
that Kane is also under bonds to answer
a charge of assault and battery in the
Franklin County COurt.

NEW OXFORD, Aug. 8, 1870.
EDITOR STAR:—While spending a few
wyeks in New Brunswick, several years
ado, I stopped at the house of John P.
Smith, a native of England, whose history
-as a "Son of Temperance" is worthy of
note. He was then seventy years of age
and a charter member of Avon Division in
a small village of that Dominion. He had
passed the chair three times, and was then
filling the office of Recording Scribe for
the sixtieth term, and for ten successive
years commissioned as D. G. W. Patri
arch, and he said that no charge had ever
been preferred against him; he has faith
fully kept the pledge, was constant at his
post, and hoped to die in the harness. His
aged wife was fully with him in the work.
This couple rode on the first train of the
first railroad in the world—the "Stockton
and Darlington," in the County of Dur
ham, England, opened June 21, 1825.
This road was built by George Stevenson,
sen., who afterwards built the Manchester
and Liverpool Railway. A plenty of such
faithful souls scattered among the masses
of men would be indeed a saving element
in society.
A trip through a valley in that country,
gave me an opportunity of seeing the
"Garden of New Brunswick" in the field
verdure of summer's best outfit. This
interesting strip of land, no doubt once
the bed of a branch of the Bay of Fundy,
will ever present to the student of nature
a fruitful subject of thought and exami
nation.
Though absent from the stirring scenes
of "my native land" on the ever memora
lde Fourth, and although I felt somewhat
of a yearning on that day for the associa
tions of old, I was not altogether without
entertainment, for I had the rare privilege
of taking a ride through "Paradise," and
picking strawberries with some of the
•`angels."
With uo law but license, and the old
English customs of drinking fastened on
the prejudices of the people, so strongly
that even the religious sentiment can
scarcely shake them Off, Temperance
work is something there, which requires
nerve and determination. But the con
summation must be reached; and the
agencies of the present must, by their
efficiency, pave the way for those of the
future. May God bless the right, and

hails from one of the upper districts of
South Carolina, called at the Pick office,
'and among other novelties ; he mentioned
"Wolfe's Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps;"
and stated as a fact, that in his section of
the country, nearly all of the physicians,
in certain cases, when they deemed ardent
spirits necessary to prolong or save life,
invariably used these "Schnapps," justly
regarding it as the only spirits that could
be procured pure and unadulterated. He

N THE YOUNG AND RISING GENERATION
The vegetative powers of life are strong, but In a
few years how often the pallid hue, the lack-lustre
eye and emulated form, and the bnpossibWty of
application to mental effort, show its baneful In
fluence. It soon becomes evident to the observer
that some depressing influence is checking the
development of the body. Consumption Is talked
of, and perhaps the youth is removed from school
and sent Into the country. Thls Is one of the
orst movements. Removed from ordinary di
versions of the ever-changing scene of the city,
the powers of the body, too flinch enfeebled to
give zest to healthful and rural exercise, thoughts
are turned inwards upon themselves.
If
the patient be a female, the approach of the
menses is looked for with anxiety, as the first
symptom in which Nature is to show her saving
power In difinsins , the circulation and visiting the
cheek with the bloom of health. Alas! Increase
appetite has grown by what it fed on; the e
ergies of the system are prostrated, and the whole
economy is deranged. The beautiful and wond
erful period in which body and mind undergo so
fascinating a change from child to woman, Is
looked for In vain: the parent's heart bleeds In
anxiety, and fancies pie grave but waiting for Its

arising from excesses or early indiscretion, attend-

Exertion, Loss of Power, Loss of Memory, Diffi

Death, Night Sweats, Cold Feet, Wakefulness,
Dimness of Vision, Langour, Universal Lassitude
of the Muscular System, Often Enormous Appe

ing of the Body, Dryness of the Skin, Pallid
couisteos..., am grupuons on the Face, Pain in
the Back, Heaviness of the Eyelids, Frequently
Black Spots Flying before the Eyes, with Tempo
rary Suffusion and Loss of Sight, Want of Atten
tion, Great Mobility. Restlessness, with Horror of
Society. Nothing is more desirable to such pa
tients than Solitude, and nothing they more dread,
for Fear of Themselves; no Repose of Manner,
no Earnestness, no Speculation, but a hurried
Transition from one question to another.
These symptoms, If allowed to go on-whch
this Medicine Invariably removes—soon follow
Loss of Power. Fatuity, and Epileptic Fits, Inoue
of which the patient may expire.
During the Superintendence of Dr. Wilson at
the Bloomingdale Asylum, this sad result occur
red to two patients; reason had for a time left
them, and both died of epilepsy. They were of
both sexes, and about twenty years of age.
Who can say that these excesses are not [re
quently followed by those direful diseases Insanity
and Consumption? The records of the Insane
Asylums, and the melancholy deaths by Consump-
Lion, bear ample witness to the truth of these as
sertions. In Lunatic Asylums the most melan
choly exhibition appears. The countenance is
actually sudden and quite destitute—neither
Mirth or Grief ever visits ft. Should a sound of
the voice occur, it is rarely articulate.
'With woeful measures wan Despair
Low sullen sounds their grief beguiled."

eases and symptoms, we are prepared to offer an
invaluable gift of Chemistry for the removal of
