Tim CELERY Quor.—We held to the
tame opinion now that we have for twen!
ti- five years, that as a rule the trans-
Whiting of Celery is deferred to too late
a period. in nine cases out of ten there
is not time enough allowed to 'fully de
velop the crop. Will not the experience
of nearly every one affirm this; another
mistake is shown in setting the plants
too near the surface of the ground, ren
dering the banking-up difficult and
deficient. We greatly prefer the old
way hi vogue since the first cultivaiion
of celery in this country; it is to dig
trenches full ten inches deep; stir up
the sub Soil thoroughly; mix with plenty
of short, well rotted yard manure; set
the plants; water twice a day; cover
with boards to protect from sun six or
seven hours a day, say from 9..t0 4, until
the plants are well established; then ap
manure daily,in the absence of rain, until
filling in and banking up of the earth
begins, •
The plants for early use—for the lat
ter part of November and through De
cember—should be set the last week in
June; and all the rest by the middle of
July.
Many persons cultivate celery in
double or tripple rows. This does well
enough were ground is scarce; but
*here there ist plenty of room single
rows are to be preferred, even though
the- plants are net closer together than
usual. We have had celery by the
single row system three feet and a half
in length by the end of September.—

To PREVENT HOGS FROM BITING
EACH OTRER.—A correspondent of the
Prairie Farmer says: Fifteen years ago
I began feeding a large number of hogs
on floored pens around a flouring mill,
and they commenced biting each other,
One hog would give - another a bite,
when he would run and squeal, and
each hog he.passed near would give him
a bite, and thus they kept the poor ani
mal going until he died. I would go to
the pen and stop them, but they would,
soon commence again. I concluded
they were feverish, which made them
restless, and they just bit each other for
the want of something to cool their fev
er. I tried a variety of remedies, and
at length tried feeding stove coal, which
I found a complete remedy. I have
continued ever since to feed my hogs
all the coal they would eat, and have
never had any more trouble with their
biting each other. ‘-
THE CABBAGE FLEA.---All exchange
says: This destructive little insect is
becoming very abundant, and consider
able Care is required to keep it in check.
Young cucumbers, cabbages, tomatoes,
and several kinds of vegetables, are its
natural food, and while the plants are
young this flea does them much injury,
even if it does not entirely destroy them.
We have tried many remedies, but none
has been so effectual in destroying or
driving away the pests as dry wood
ashes scattered over the plants in the
Morning wnile wet with . dew. Two or
three applications have usually been
sufficient, There are several species of
these insects (Halticas) that infest our
gardens, but the small one that infests
vegetable plants can easily be controlled
with ashes or lime, applied as directed.
IMPROVED SUBSTITUTE FOR WAsH
rfkro-Sone.—lt has been found that the
hnosulphate of soda, which is now man
ufactured very cheaply, for the use of
photographers, is muck better than the
common waslung-soda to wash delicate
articles. It attacks neither the skin of
the hands nor the objects to be washed,
as does the common soda; and at the
smile time it is an effective bleaching
agent, and takes out many spots better
than any other substailee.
