Messrs. J. Hay Brown and Wm. C.
Straver—both young men of acknowledged
ability and teaching capacity—have charge
of the instruction in the Preparatory De
partment. Rev. 8. flentman has liccepted
the position of Superintendent, and will
have the control and supervision of the
discipline, religious instruction, lodging,
boarding, &c., of this important depart
ment, subject to the general regulations
of the Faculty. This arrangement, while
securing efficent instruction, provides a
desirable want in all educational institu
tion, especially where youths of tender age
are sent abroad. In such case parents
want for their children supervision and care
of their personal habits and conduct as
well as intellectual training. Such pro
vision the Preparatory Department of
the College offers to Parents and Guard
ians, and we look for a large accession of
new students.
Prof. Conrad has resigned the chair of
Physical Sciences. He has had in view
vacating the chair, for some time, and had
placed his resignation in the hands of the
Faculty
r as far back as April; but was
induced' to withhold it until the close of
thli session. The Board unanimously
adopted the following Resolutions:
1. That, in accepting the resignation of
Prof. Conrad, as "Ockerhausen Professor
of Physical Sciences," the Board desires
to express its sincere regret that contin
gencies have arisen in which Prof.' Conrad
has deemed it his duty to tender his resig
nation, whereby his active relations to the
institution are severed, and the Board
loses his valuable services.
2. That we desire further to express our
high appreciation of the personal worth of
Prof. Conrad, and bear cordial testimony
to the enthusiasm with which he sought to
develope the responsible department under
his care—his conscientious devotion to duty
—the thoroughness of his instruction and
his eminent capacity as a Teacher of
Physical Science.
The duty of providing instruction in the
Physical Sciences, until the election of an
incumbent, was committed to the Faculty.
We' are authorized to say that arrange
ments are in progress by which this
portant department will be filled. In ad
dition to thorough text-book instruction,
special lectures will be delivered by gentle
men of scientific reputation from abroad.
So that the friends of the Institution need
be under no apprehension that the depart
ment of Physical Science will suffer during
llhe year.
A. S. Pratt, Esq., of Washington, • D.
C., and Rev. Dr. Albert; of Philadelphia,
were elected Trustees, to fill vacancies in
the-Board.
A letter was read from J. 31. Stevenson,
Ent of Baltimore, proposing to present to
the Institution a fine Portrait of Thad
deus Stevens, deceased. It was accepted,
and the thanks of the Board ordered to be
tendered to the donor.
Profs. Ferrier, Crull and Baugher, with
Rev. Dr.4Butier and Dr. E. G. Fahnestock,
were appointed a Committee to make ar
rangemente for a Re-Union of the Aluinni
and friends of the Institution during the
next Commencement week of 1871.

Endowment Agent, were continued,, and

The day, however, was observed by all
classes of our citizens, in the general ces
sation of business, and each indulging in
such festivities as salted their taste.—
"Young America" took possession of the
town immediately after midnight, setting
things to right generally. An in , i‘s.Ant
discharge of pistols, guns and crackers,
from 12 o'clock until day-light disturbed
restless sleepers. At an early hour the
Brass Band and Gettysburg Zmiaves made
their appearance on the street, the former
disc
!cursing excellent music and the latter
firing military salutes. Innumerable pic
nic parties left town after breakfast for
various points, and the boys having ex
'haunted their supply of shooting crackers,
the town assumed the quiet and stillness
of a Sabbath until evening, when with the
return of the pick-nickers -the streets a
gain' became very lively. The day closed

How TO KEEP Coon.—The Herald of
Health for July gives some directions upon
the pertinent problem of how to keep cooL
We quote :
1. The diet should be composed largely
or entirely of. fruits, fresh vegetables and
wheat-meal bread, and other preparations
of wheat and oat-meal. Corn-meal bread
and cakes should be seldom eaten, if at all,
during hot weather. Avoid all stimulat
ing or heating articlettof food, as meats, es
pecially fat, or salted meats, butter, grav
ies and greasy food of all kinds, sugar,
mustard, spices, etc. Do not eat hot food,
and especially avoid eating more than the
system requires. .
2. Drink nothing but water - and that
only a small quantity at a time. Of course
this precludes the pie of tea, coffee and all
alcoholic drinks./
3. 'The clothiiig should be light, light
colored, loose fitting and changed often.
4. The entire body Should be bathed
every day, either in the morning or at
night. *armers and others who perspire
freely ate are exposed to the dust should
bathe at night. • They will rest and sleep
better fbr doing so. The whole body can
be effectually cooled in a short time by
holding pieces of ice in the hands, or let
ting a stream of oold water run out upon
the wrists or ankles.
45. Avoid all undue mental or physical
excitement.

BABE-BALL AT NEW OXFORD.
Hasans. EDITOBS:—I stated in my arti
cle last week that the 'Keystone Club,"
of York, bait challenged the "Little
Brown Jug Club," of New Oxford, to
' play a match game on Saturday last.—
The morning opened with rain, and no
one expected the game would come off,
but the York boys, not deterred by the
rain, were here in time. The Oxford boys
went to work axid soon had everything in
ae good order as was possible. The play
commenced about 11 o'clock. Two inn
ings were played before dinner and seven
after, resulting in a severe defeat for the
Yorkers. The-following is a summary of
the game:
