The child is only about four years old.— York Democrat. SMASH UP.—On Tuesday last, as Sheriff Hann was adjusting the bridle to a spirited horse, hitched to a buggy, in front of the Keystone House, on Chambersburg street, the horse made off, dashing along the pave ment, tearing down Mr. Winter's sign, and thence around into the diamond, where be Was stopped, the buggy being a perfect wreck. Chinese lanterns of various forms and colors were suspended from the trees along the wilks, in the arbors, and throughout the grove, in large numbers. life large poitico In front of the main Col lege building, with its massive pillars, was richly festooned with evergreens.— The Class exercises took, place from a platform erected immediately in front of itlreteps, in the folinwing circler : I—Music by the Gettysburg Brass Band. 2—Prayer by Prot. Fire works followed. Our citizens generally turned out to enjoy the scene, not less. than one thousand ladies and gentlemen spending several boars on the grounds, the College building, President's and Pro fessors' residenoes being thrown open to the visitors. Everything passed off pleas antly, without any disorder. By 10 o'clock the lights were extinguished and everything about the grounds resumed its wonted quiet. ESCAPE.—On Saturday night last, Jacob Charles, alias Jacob Conrad, indict ed for the burglary of Mr. Schick'm store, made his escape from the County Jail, under circumstances which leave no doubt that he was, assisted by outside parties. He was chained to the floor, in one of the cells which was locked. He sawed or filed the chain which fastened him to thtf floor, then ppetted.. his cell door from within, relocking it as he pass ed out; hnlocked a opll-door at the rear end of the - oorrider ; broke through the wall of this cell, and made his escape over the outer Jail wall. As each cell has a different lock, no two cell keys being a- like, the prisoner must have been fur nished with keys from the outside" speci ally prepared. Additional evidence .of outside aid is furnished in the fact that the hole broken through the Cell-wall shows marks of chisels or iron tools on the out side, the operations on the hole being con ducted from within Ad without. A board was found propped against the outside wall of the cell in which the prisoner had been confined, by mounting which com munication could behold with the prisoner through the cell window. The escape was not discovered until Sunday • morning. Detective Rouser started in penult, Sheriff /Dunk accom panying him as far as York. Thus far nothing has been heard of him, except that a man ausWering to Gonad's appear ance was f seen passing through New Ox ford early on Sunday morning. Sheriff Klunk offers a reward of $lOO for the ar rest of the prisoner. We understand that on Saturday after noon a gentleman called at the Jail, to see Conrad, professing to be from Lancaster county; and apparently anxious to see whether he could identify the prisoner as the man who had been negotiating for the purchase of a farm: An interview was granted, the stranger professing to recog nize Conrad, but the latter denying all knowledge of his visitor. Whether this person was a confederate and subsequent. ly aided in Conrad's escape, is not known. The eon of an humble , me chanic, be began life as a common soldier, and by ebeer force of natural ability, nearly always exercised in behalf of liberalism, he bas won his way to a throne which is claimed by one of the oldest and proudest royal families in Europe. There is no doubtrthat he is better fitted for the posi tion than any other public man in Spain.— He has had large experience in the arena tive.office, having!.twine been at the head of Government, as Regent in 1841, and as Prime Minister in 1854. Since 1857 he has had very little to do s . rlth. Spanish politics ; • and while he was deeply in sympathy with the-movement to depose Isabella, he bas been EiD little a bitter partisan, that the lib eril men of all degrees and opinions can _unite in supporting him much more readily than in the case of any other prominent Spaniard. Moreover, he is a man in whom even his political enemies repose entirecon rldence. Throughout his long and active public life he has borne as unblemished reputation as an honest, upright conscienti ous gentleman, and as a gallant and chiral -I,ous soldier. The principal objection to Espartero is that he is an old man, In his seventy-ninth year, and that he is childless. He cannot live a great while longer, and when his death occurs, unless provision for the suc cession is made meanwhile, the struggle of the factions which has agitated Spain' so long will begin again,,and the ,_Aifficulty of selecting& satisfactory candidate' will pre sent itself in more font:A(1801e shape.
