ARREST.—laulle stAansatiott, wits pro

doted in our uoninally quiet tiwit on Toes
slay evening by, the announcement that
I Detective Rouser bad arrested one of the
't.trglars cunctnted in the robbery of Mr
Sehick's store,_on the 25i1t.n11, and would
n sell herein the evening train. A large
crowd of curious men and boys.greeted the
Snivel of the prisoner nt the depot, and cc.
coned him to Justice Cover's office, and
thence to the jail. It seems that Detective
Rouser, who bad tracked the burglars down
the York pike the day after the robbery,
concluded to follow up_ the trail, and after
consultation with Mr, Schick took the cars
on Friday morning Pa' York, His investh
guar - mother° led him to believe That the
person who some weeks ago negotiated for
the purchase of the Methodist Church pro
perty in this place, (Smith's corner,) had a
bandit' the burglary. This peTou,hati
en hii-slame tour. &hick, at the tirse"of
the negotiation, as Jacob Charles—claimed
to Lail from Phpadelphis, and professed to
have large means. - In working up the case
attetective Bonier found that a msu answer
ing to Charles' description resided in Peters
burg, Lancaster county, whose real name,
however, is Jobs Conrad—a person without
means, recently from the State Penitentiary,
and bearing anything but. an enviable repu
tation. Conrad was finally found at a hotel
in Lancasterand anieteit Detective Ron-
bad him committed to the Lancaster jail,
‘me back' to Gettysburg fur the rtquisite
legal, papers on Monday noon—leaving
again in the next train for Lancaster, and
on Tuesday evening returned with Lis pris
oner.
As the prisoner will be tried at April
term, we refrain from a publication of the
facts of the case. We may, without
propriety, say that the case has an ugly
look (or the priaoeer. Uunder the assumed
nume of Charles be came to Gettysburg os
dsibly to negotiate for the purchase of the
irch property—was frequently •iu kfr.
Schick's store and had ample opportunity
o examine all the surroundings. In one of
the ititerviev,s we believe Mr. Schick, de
ceiVetkikY.WB professions, permitted him to
examine the internal arrangements of hie
safe. Charles called at Chritzman's Car
penter Shop, (some tools from which shop
were found In the store after the •buiglary,)
to consult Mr. thritzman as to the cost of
erecting it large building on Smith's corner,
.Lc. The-terms for the pnrchate of the
church property were agreed on between
Mr. Schick and Charles—the latter leaving
and promising to return within a week or
two to close the purchase. Mr. Schick nev
er heard from him. It seems, however,
that Charles was in Gettysburg again in
company with a stranger, some days before
the burglary, but did not I 4 .*e Wendt
known , to Mr; &ticker any lieisou else.— I
He was recognized, however, by several
citizens, although in apparent disguise, with
changed clothing, &c. •
. We understand further, that Charles, alias
Conrail, since his visit to Gettysburg, ne
gotiated the purchase of a farm from a Mr.
Shilock, merchant in Columbia, agreelugto
pay $lB,OOO and representing himself to be
from Brooklyn, N. Y. As with Mr. Schick,
he was to call again with Mr. Shilock and
close up the purchase, but failed to come to
time.
Detective Rouzer deserves much credit
for the skill and persistency with which he
has thus far worked up the case. If Conrad
be guilty of the burglary,-the next step will
be to ferret out. his confederate,

TRH LADY'S FRIEND FOR APRIL
—The April number of this popular maga
zine comes to us with the freshness and life
of Spring, 14 the steel plate "ON Guaao,"
the alert - wtchfulness of the dog contrasts
Suety with the repose of the sleeping boy.
The OoloreeFashiou Place is gay and grace
ful as usual ; and the profusion and variety
of illustrations of articles of feminine We
and adornment give the ladies every oppor
tunity to know bow to drew well. Those
who like to mike for themselves will and
assistance in the work table department.
Music, “Taliping et the Gate." The stories
are very good.
THE RIVERSIDE MAGAZENE.—The
April number has great variety. Foremost
among the brilliants is another chapter of
Porte Crayon's humorous story of the Young
Virginians. The story of Bjarnl Guniolfsson
is in the vein of Chtistinsi Auderasen, and
relates to the Nkse settlement of Cape Cod.
Vieux Moustache continues his story of the
Captain's Legacy, The moat solid article is
a description of Berlin markets. The num
ber contains greater variety than usual, and
agrees completely with the merits that have
rendered the Magazine popular.
EVERY SATURDAY, No. 15, contains
the first instalment of Mr. Dicken's new
Story, "Tim MYSTERY or EDWIN DROOD."
This is publisbed.from advance sheets, by
special arrangement with Mr. Dickens, and
appears simultaneously with its publication
in England. It is accompanied by the
illuitratious drawn for the English edition
by Mr. Fiides, under the supervision of
Mr. Dickens himself. Those who desire to
read this great story In its earliest and only
authorized form in America, can find it in
Every Saturday. • Tbisnumberof Every

Dickens, and views of his residence at
Gad's Hill Place. A supplement is issueJ
with the number entitled "Mr. Pickwick's
Reception," drawn expressly for this num
ber
by Mr. S. Eytirge, Jr. It represents
the numerous personages of Mr. DAcken's
hovels passing before Mr. Pickwick, to
whom they are pointed out by the trusty
Sam Weller. The - admirers of Mr. Dickens
will easily recognize their favorites and
aversions,—Mr. Pecluittiffand hlsdatleJliers,
Jolly Mark Tapley, Mr. Micawber and the
twins, Fagin, the Artful Dodger, the Fat
Boy trying to grow fatter, Little Nell and

AN ABIZOLYYTE oy STANTON. —Edwin hi.
Stanton could snub a fine lady who demand
ed a favor of him in behalf of her position,
but he could cot turn away from a woman
with faded face and faded garments who
came to him for human help. An aged
mother came trembling into his prt sence to
make some request in behalf of a soldier
son. She wai received kindly, listened to
patiently, and replied to favorably. Then,
coming back to herself, !lie poor woman
was so overpowered by what jam bad done
and the awful presence of the great war
minister that, in her confusion, she seemed
not to know how to get out of the room.—
"Mother, let me show you the way," said
Mr. Stanton, übe opened the door and
wal, lted by her aide through the halls to the
street, wiih more reverence than he would
have shown to a queen,
