WISSINING SPRING PIGS.
The Rev. John W. Haskell, of Lis
bon, COnn., bought on May Ist, 1889, a
ptsy eight weeks and three days old.--
It was not large of its age, but was
t hrifty, and of the most approvedbreed
n the country. 1 4 1 e kept it until It
was two hundred end twenty-five days
old (seven and one-half months), and
then killed it, when• it weighed 837
pounds,q gaining an average of one
and a-half pounds a day from its birth.
He might have sold it at 15c:a pound,
and it would have brought him $50.65.
On September 1 he bought another pig
six weeks old. He kept it until It was
one hundred and twenty-five days old
(four months), and it weighed, dressed
and dry, 140 pounds, having gained an
average of one pound two and a half
ounces a day. Holed both on one-half
wheat shorts and one-half Indian meal
at first, gradually decreasing the 'meal,
until the last month, when the shorts
were left-out entirely. In addition to
the meal, the spring pig had the milk
of a cow and a heifer, was regularly
fed, and was permitted the range-of a
pen about twelve feet long by six feet
wide. It is exceedingly rare that a bog
shows such an average increase as the
one first named. Taking our Eastern
spking pigs they are generally killed
from nine to ten months old, and the
general average is not more than two
hundred and fifty pounds—a growth of
less than a pound a day. Our farmers
r -zould save a considerable sum by a
• More careful and generous feeding of
their hogs. The general 'plan v is to
"keep them along" during the summer
with slope, sour milk, etc., waiting un
til fall before feeding much grain ;
whereas, meal fed from the day the
pig is four weeks old till the day it is
killed, all that it will bear and keep
healthy, is money wellinvested. There
can be no question about the matter if
come= be. bought for $1.20 a bushel,
and porWbrings 12c. a pound.
. CONCERNING the watering of newly
planted trees, a writer in the Prairie
Farmer says : In. most cases people
oinnmit an error by watering their
newly-planted trees °lobe to the trunk.
Every tree forms a little hill around its
bide rank to shed the water off, de the
trunk Is protected from surpl rain by.
the leaves of the crown. • T is the
reason why, in its natural state, we al
ways find the soil round the trunk,
and particularly under it, very dry.—
Watering close to the.trunk, produces
the rotting of the small rootlets which
extend from the crown of the root and
go downwards. This disease gradually
extends and often produces death of
the tree. If trees have to be Watered,
it must be done half-way between the
trunk and the the' outer side of the
crown. The same principle has to
guide manuring. .
ABOUT PRTNING.-It has long been
. a practice among farmers to conlmence
pruning apple trees in February, main
ly, we suppose, because there is leisure
time. There are some reasons why
this should be done. There will not
be sufficient action in the tree to har
den the surface, where a limb is taken
off, before the sap ascends in the spring.
When this action does take place, the
sap flows out and spreads over the sur
rounding bark, and by some chemical
action which takes place in it, is
changed to a poisonous fluid which
greatly injures the tree. It is very un
safe to prune before the middle of June.
Soon after the leaves fall in autumn,
and in mid-summer, are the safe times
to do this work.
ONE pound of meat put into a pot of
boiling water, and then evoked "done,"
will furnish more nu trimentthan three
pounds which have soaked in the pot
until the water has attained the boiling
point.
