DONATION VISIT. —WO learn that on
Thursday the 3d inst., Rev. PETICR BERG
STRESSES, Pastor of the Taneytown Luth
eran Charge, was made the recipient of a
"donation" visit from a number of mem
bers of the Taneytown church, bearing
with them innumerable tokens of good
will and appreciation of his pastoral
labors, in the shape of flour, meat, corn
hay, wood, lard; chickens, Ac. One by
one the donors arrived, thronging the par
sonage, and depositing their gifts, which
amounted in the aggregate to about $313.
Among the gifts was an envelope, contain
ing $lll5 in greenbacks, which • was for
mally presented, on behalf of the donors,
by Mr. Benjamin Shank in some appro
priate remarks expressive of the faithful
and acceptable services of their pastor ; to
which Rev. Mr. Bergstrasser replied, ac
knowledging his obligations to the congre
gation for their liberal gifts and the uni-
form kindness he had experienced at their
hands. The visit had been delicately . ar
ranged, so as to take the pastor and family
by surprise. After spending several
hours pleasantly at the parsonage, the
donors retired—the occasion being one
ang to be remembered.
Id:seas. Korrons :—An earnest effort has
been and 14 now being made to procure s
change In the license laws at the hands of
our Legislature. I can truly say, as I have
often done before, that no system can be
worse than that which now exists. Wen
dell Philips, in a recent lecture at the Ac
ademy of Music, in Philadelphia, urged
earnestly upon his audience that, even set
ting aside all the social and moral evils re
sulting from drink, we cannot afford, po
litically, to tolerate intemperance ; that In a
goverment like ours, whose strength lies
with the people,-it is a political necessity
that the people should be trustworthy—
which an intemperate people cannot be ;
Met men, to be capable of self-government,
must be sober. He pointed out the two
classes into which society divides itself:
the coneerettin and the pregtvesive, both
equally honest in their opinions, but utter
ly divided ; and between these, holding
often the balance of power, those who have
no opinion, but an object only, and behind
them the mass of blind, ignorant and vici
oup, who are bound together and forged in
to a weapon to be used at pleasure. And
whence comes this mass? Prom the rum

I have seen extracts from Dr. Elam's
book, showing unmistakably thatncitional,
and not merely individual, degeneration is
the result of inebriety. Not, of course, im
mediately, but, as time passes, the taint in
~ the blood of those immediately affected
spreads wider and wider. So in Sweden
the average stature of the nation has di
minished, the average duration of lite has
shortened, general tendency to sickness in
creased, even wholly new forms of disease
hays shown themselves; the innocent suf
fer with the guilti. All this has been the
result of a relaxation of the laws tending to
check the sale of intoxicating beverages.—
Our cities and towns of note, for the last
few years, have shown a most alarudng in
crease of liquor shops. Temptation is offer
ed to the weak in every block and at every
corner, and all this is done under the cover,
real or pretended, of the laws. Is it. not
time that something was done ? I com
mend the subject earnestly to the attention
of the Legislature, and all good temperance
people. No better work min be affected
than to put some check to the spread of
this tremendous evil.
