(IRA PE VINES No one, In town or country, having a square yard of ground should be without a vine, and there are few va rieties of fruit that could be made more profinible than the grape. Our object now, however, is not so much to rec ommend its cultivation as a business, but for the sake of the family. Every body loves grapes, and in. season there Is no fruit more healthy, and none more easily raised, on a small scale at .least and if we Can only Induce some of our readers who have. never turned their attention to the subject to plant out a few roots or cuttings this spring, we are confident that in a couple of years or so, when pulling from the vines the luscious bunches for their ' family table E they will inwardly bless us for having made the suggestion to them. A root—or if that is not en han dy to be had—a cutting, which can be readily obtained from any one who has a vine upon his premises, can be stuck down in your yard, alongside of a fence, or what is better, against a wall, and as it progresses to be trained and tack ed until' reaching a height to require more support, when , it can be trained along the fence or upright stakes sup plied it to enable it to bear its increas ing weight. You can, according to the room you haye in the yard or garden, multiply the foots or cuttings. Of eonrae you save at least a year in time by putting out the roots, and if to be obtained In no other way, you had bet ter purchase some of the regular gar deners. Choose a warm exposure for the vines, and about ten to twelve feet apart, so as to allow plenty of room to spread, and not to be overshadowed by each other; if you plant out any num ber, on the side of a hill is prefera4le, Let the ground be well ,broken up where you plant them., and put with the soil a supply of rich mould or barn- yard manure, or refuse from the bin / nen or shoemakers' premises ; and, if you will go to the trouble of gathering up the bones about your yard and breaking them in small pines and place them around the roots, it will be an excellent manure and a protection too from mice. The ground about t4ie rows of vines can be cultivated with any vegetable or plant desired which grows low, and the stirring of the ground, if the roots are not - touched, will tie beneficial. We would tulvis4 as `• about the best, for those who are going in on a small scale, at first to obtain the roots or plants of the Concord, the .Del aware, the Catawba, the Diana, or the Isabella, as the varieties best suited for their purpose, as most reliable and eas ily obtained, and as well suited to our latitude.
