has passed both branches of the Maryland
Legislature unanimously, and now only
awaits ratificatiodby a vote of the prpke

three weeks from now.
ACCIDENT.—A few days ago Mr. J.
11. Baumgardner, of Llttlestown, met
with a painful accident. Whilst engaged
in hewing a rough pieoe of timber, the
broad axeaccidently slipped, aud entered
his right foot, severing one of his toes
entirely from his foot, andaeverely cutting
several others.--Prees:
DROWNED.—On the 7th inst., son of
WM. BELTZICI., one of the editors of the
Hanover Citizen, aged four years, was
drowned near New Oxford, while on a visit
to his grandfather, Nicholas Ileltzel, Esq.=
Ile had strayed to an old stone quafry near
by Mr. Heltzel's residence, adjoining . the
Railroad, and by some means fell is. The
child being missed some time, alarm was
felt at his prolonged absence, and upon
search being made, his lifeless body was
discovered in the quarry.
• RELIGIOUS MEETINGS.—The Rev.
Mr. Dixon has been holding a protracted
meeting in the hi. E. Church, in New Ox
ford, for several weeks past. It is said that
a good feeling prevails, with numerous
seekers after religion.
There are also meetings held nightly in
Myer's school house, below New 'Oxford;
bleetings are also being held at the
Pin'es church near New Chester, and a
' several other places through the county.
The meetings are well attended.
HEAVY 1100.—On Monday last, Ansi
,
lIAM N. Hass, residing near TaneytoWn,
Md., killed a hog, about 25 months old,
which weighed, when dressed, 72i lbs.—
', Being an unusually large porker, there was
a good deal of guessing as to the probable
weight, among the neighbors.-' Six-tiro
persons put their guesses and names op pa:-
per, each contributing 25 cents for the pri
vilege, the person coming nearest lo take
the money. Mr. ArisLr.ou SMITH of Fred
i
e ick county, proved the best-gueiser, Omit
lug within one pound of the correct weight.
rar Messrs. D. Lothrop & Co., of Bos
ton, send us a package of beautiful
juvenile volumes, entitled (Teachers' Gift
Books) of 18 mo. eze, neatly done up in
paper covers, and containing about 60
pages each._ The stories are sensible, high
toned, full of life and zest and teach noble
lessons, such as the little people will be
likely to learn, remember and profit by.
They are fitting presents from a teacher or
a parent, and the books are cheap as well
as good. They can be obtained of the pub
lishers, by mail, postpaid, 40 cents per
package.
311.711D0CH COMING.—We announced.
s everal weeks ago that JA3CE/3 E. Murdoch,
the eminent tragedian, had been engaged
by the Phrenakosmian Society of Penn
sylvania College, to give a Reading in-Ag
ricultural Hall. We are Informed by the
committee that Mr. Murdoch will be here
on Monday evening the 28th inst. The
same society has engaged Bishop Simrsos,
of the Methodist Epticopal Church, to de
liver a Lecture, which will be announced in
due season. The Society is wise in secur
ing first class Lecturers, and ,we predict a
full house on both occasiops.
LECTURE.—The lecture by Rev. E. '•B
RAFFENSPERGER, on Tuesday evening, on
"The Humors of the Pulpit and the Reif,"
was quite an enjoyable entertainment. Mr.
R. is a pleasant talker. Ministerial experi
ence has developed a rich fund of anecdote, u
illustrative of varied Plasm of human
character,, lind the lecturer , has judiciously
culled. therefrom a number of humorous
anecdetes, which are well tbld. While
dealing largely with anecdote, Mr. R. does
not lose sight of the dignity of the Minis
- terial - office, and the lecture was character
ized by common sense, evangelical senti
ment, and quaint humor. The evening be
ing very unpleasant, the audience was not
large.
HUNG HIMBEF.—A Mr. John BrCoke,
storekeeper in Rayville on the Parkton
and Manchester Railroad, a - few miles
from Parkton, was found suspended by a
bed chord Id his stable, on - Wednesday
morning of last week, by the servant girl
who went out to milk. He was not yet
dead, when discovered, and out down by
his wife. A physician was immediately
sent for, a few miles off, whe used every
means to bring him to life, but failed. It
was indebtedness, It is thought, that caused
him to commit tiie nu& act., per - Monday
last, his store goods and chattier were ad
vertised babe sold. A few days before he
committed suicide, kie was in his usual
good health and spirits but complained
of having been badly treated.
PARKTON AND MANCHESTER
RAILROAD.—We learnl.that about one
mile of this road has already been graded,
at the lower end, near Parkton, and that
ground was broken at the uppep end,
near Manchester; on Mandy isitt,, by
Messrs. MeGuicken and Shower, the con-_
tractors. The road approaches the town
on the Eantnids, and When at the College
it curves to the le ft , crossing WEI Pike near
the centre of the town, at its loWeet point,
at Crumrine's store and the lower Hotel,
making tie Depot on the Westniinister
road, near the centre of the town. There
was considerable contention as to where
the Depot was to be located, but finally
the west side prevailed, Dr, Shower giv
ing two acres of'ground •to the oompany
for Depot purposes.
REMARKABLE WEATHER.—IIIs said
by many old persons oftktrand other sec
tions, that such weather has never been
known, the winter being =natter& mild
and open. Almost every week, thus far,
'plowing has been done—one day sun
