" •HEPSBPD DOGS.
About one you ago I purchased a re
markable fine Shepherd Dog of you firm.
Thinking it. would be of some benefit to
your readers to be made acquainted with
the peculiar traits of these remarkable
dogs, I send yon a few abort notes of the
performances of mina He will bring the
wive, oxen or horses from the most distant
fields by simply telling him what you want.
Soon after we got him we sent him to watch
the sheep that were in a field, one half of
which was in oats. We visited him sever
al times during the day and fond the faith
ful dog, who was walking with sentinel
like punctuality, up and down the bounda
ry line of.the two crops, close to which
some of his trust were browsing. Upon
the slightest attempt of any of them to in
fringe on he Oats, he immediately drove
them back; but ,!the mite, cff his bumps-
Ing very long,' WO sometimes sorely put
to, and had torturry beckwards and for
wards in rather* laaghable manger, Col
lecting his en ,he finished by driving
the whale flock to the extremity Of the pas
ture. Then' satisfied with the altered posi
tion of affairs, ie retarded to the boundary
line, and lay down with the assurance that
they must now feed op to him.
Not long since, he accompanied a friend
to Chicago where he purchased ,a lot of
sheep—upwards of two hundred and fifty.
At night in bringing them home they
were turned into a field. The fences not
being vary good"they broke in with several
other droves, and consequently, soon all
became mixed together. The rim morn
ing, without making a single mistake, the
dog picked out the whole of his masters
sheep from amongst the others, almost
unaided, and 'although he bad been so short
a time acquainted with thern--after which
he drove them to their destination single
handed.
I was greatly gratified M such an admir
able display of canine sagacity, as it has
seldom or ever been equaled, never surpass
ed, for brilliant intelligence and canine ob
servation:
My will, says he Is of incalculable value
in caring for the younger children when
they are' !tinning about the arm, as she
always considers them sea when nude/ 1 411e
care of Jack. He will caw" luncheon to
the men in the most Wow fen of the
arm, and never Air to inch a mouthful.
There are certain peculiarities of charac
ter belonging to the shepherd dog well
worthy of note. He is a remarkably small
eater, and is the least greedy of all the en
the race; in fact it ts quite astonishing
how many hours he will remain true to his
post without indulging his appetite ; he
=real= but lit

position, and rarely condescends to join a ,
ramp, or enjoy that playful &Mance which
txdorupi to other animals. At the same
time his affections are true and unalterable
to his master and his falthadness, under
the most trying circumstances, is staunch
even to death ; and it we should seek in
the canine family for talents and qualities
especially hum
an, our convhnions ,unhesi
tatingly int. towards the tilteptierd dog.
