deaths produced by hydrophobia, remarks :
—"There is nothing so effectual as am

dozen person, and not one of them may be
affected with hydrophobia ; while on the
other hand; a dog not rabid may bite a sin

PHILIP PHILLIPS.—On Thursday.
evenalg Fist this distinguished vocalist
gave an .'Evening of Sacred Sung," iu
AaTicu'torsi HalL Mr. Phillip's repu
tation drew out a full house. It was in all
re-pects a delightful entertainment. Mr.
Phillips has a clear, sweet voice, and
sings with wonderful expression, his low
est notes being distinctly heard in the
remotest parts of the large Hall. His se
' sections are simple and in good taste,
mainly devotional, and thet'e is no mur
dering of words, but a distinctness of
articulation, which enables the hearer to
understand what is Sung and enjoy the
sentiment. Being himself a successful
composeri Mr. Phillips does not confine
himself the written music, but arrang
es it to putt the- varying sentiment of the
song, thereby securivg an expressive
rendering, unattainable by moat of Sing
ers. Mr. Phillips is an earnest 'advocate
of congregational singing—doesn't believe
in dividing devotional services into three
parte—one for the pulpit, one for the choir,
and another for the congregation. His
theory is that the office of church choirs
is to read the congregation in devotional
singing, and not to exhibit their pro fi
ciency iu diflictilt or operatic music, and
when they fall to do the former their ser
vices should be dispensed with. At in
tervals during the evening be bad the au
dience unite in singing "Coronation,"
"Old Hundred," and "4eaus, lover of my
soul," at least 500 voices uniting and mak
ing Agricultural Hall , ring with these
grand old tunes. We are not surprised
that Mr. Phillips draws full houses wher
ever he sings. He has a warm devotional
heart, and understands how to reach the
hearts oft' is hearers with his simple songs,
'The. following paragraph may or

. were berm the Special
Committee of the House of Representatives
on Saturday, and gave in their narration of
the causes of the September gold pante at
New York. As reported, the boiy fact of
special novelty is that the conspiracy was
oriiinated by Gould, on the theory that
with gold at forty premium, or above, the
bears would trassport• grain eastward, and
that the Erie Railroad would come in for a
large share of the carriage and profit there
by. When ibis scheme _ teemed in danger
of failing the attempt to draw out the Pleat

was a failtue, and brought utter defeat to
those who were engaged in it.

PUBLIC SALES.—The Season for sales of
Personal Property is approaching. A libels
advertising of these sales always proves a
good investment. It is poor economy to save
a few dollars, and thereby neglect to make
the sale known as widely as possible. At
tractive Bills judiciously posted will do
much to draw attention; but there are hun
dreds of farmers, especially in winter, who
who do nut leave their homes and thus fell
to see the Bills pouted in Hotels and places
of business. An advertised:tot in the
uetirspaper carries home to 'every family
weekly notice of the sales and the kind of
' articles to be offered, thus attracting many as
bidders who would otherwise not be present.
The large circulation of the STAR & SHAM
NEL in this and adjoining counties presents
an invaluable medium of advertising these
sales, the coat of advertising being but a
trifle compared with the publicity t h us given
and the necessarily enhanced prices, grow
ing out of competition in bidding.
We are also prepared to print, at abort
notice, attractive Sale Bills, having largely
increased our stock of Job Type. Give us
a cad.
