feeling manifested itself at this meeting,
levering an early and energeic prosecu

hope, therefore, the members will orgiti
ize at, once, appoint sub-committees, can
vas their districts, and urge upon the peo
ple the importance of a liberal Enibscrip
lion, if we ever expect to get a Road.
The money necessary to build the Road
can easily be raised. VM hat is thorium of
twelve thousand dollars,' to the increase
in the value of your lands by having a
good turnpike through them? It is now
generally conceded that it will -enhance
their value at least Tz DOLLA.IIB per
Acre. But suppose parties owning land,
within-a mile of the libe of the Road,
were to pay but two dollars per acre,
the Road would be built; and surely it
would be worth that much in clearing the
land of stones, in the vicinity of at least a
portion of it.
~As to the cost of construction, I believe
my estimate of twenty five hundred dol
lars per mile will build it. The Road
through Meehan icstown, Md., was built
at a cost of but sixteen hundred dollars
per mile—also one in Corral county, Md '
~
for twenty seven hundred per mile, and
the company had to purchase the lime
' stone to make it. P.

Society never did and never can toler

pared to an effort to reform an inveterate
eyea-dropper.° But to do that at the bid

able knowledge of popular contempt for
the deed, argues a reckless grasping after
dollars and cents, void of shame. 41 we

it, why should we have on our statute

vices ? to tempt hiiitest mei& from hottest

at ten dollars per head ? Common saying
has sanctioned to some extent the em

will any one preautpe to say, that a law,
designed to 'fix a. high moral estimate
upon the good order — ol the coMmunity
requires an award of thirty pieces of sil

The sanctity of that law is profaned by
the very idea: What man .who has-re

yard T who would not hesitate in the
discharge of en honest duty when its
very performances would render him
amenable to a charge so cruel, and yet so
challenged by the law as an act of cupidity
rather than of moral sentiment.
It Is said, whether justly or otherwise,
that any amount of testimony can be had

framed with the view ot establishing a
