WESTERN MARYLAND RAILROAD.
—ln answer to a request from the City
Council, a statement of the affairs of the
Western Maryland Railroad Company was
recently submitted by the President, Mr.
Wendell Bollman. The outstanding lia
bilitics of the Company other than stock
indebtedness are $201,777.14, to meet
which there are as resources 0247,838.43.
The earnings ter the fiscal year entling Sep
tember 30th, 1869, were $138,801.80, and
ite'.expenses $108,708, 10, in which, howev
er, is included some extraordinary and ac
cidental damages. The road is in good
condition, the Company is replacing all its
defective track, audit has been run on good
time and without accident. He says that
it is the intention of the Company to com
mence an indipeudent direct line into the
city of Baltimore at once. He is. of opin
ion, however, that it would be- advisable,
and to the interest of Baltimore W place the
road in working condition from its present
terminus ai Double Pipe Creek to Meehan
iestown, and thence to Htsgenstowa, 'there
by secuting a branch road from the impor
tant towns of Emabittsburg, Maryland, and
Waynesboro', Pennsylvania, as well as a
connection with the Frederick and_ Litties
town Railroad, and enable the Company to
realize benefits from the entire amount .of
money expended. Mr. Bullman gives an
emphatic opinion in regard to the paying
capabilities of the read upon its comple
tion.
NEW TURNPIKE.—At the
,last session
of the Legislature an act was passed to
_in
corporate "The Fairfield and', lettypburg
Turnpike Company," to - construct a pike
from Fair field to this place. The present
road is a wretched one, and almost impass
able some seasons of the year, and we are
glad to learn' that the enterprise is enlisting
a good deal of interest along the line of the
road. A meeting of all citizens favorable
to the organization of a company has been
leakled 66 Qeet at fitavely's Hotel, in F)tir
teeth, on New Year's day, at I o'clOck, to
consult and adopt the requisite preparatory
steps. We annex a lista the Commission

Had most settled our brains for a long winter's
nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what moll* matter.
Away to thii window I flewlikets fiaßTl
Tore open the shutters, and threw up the sash.
The moon on the Neast of the hew-fallen snow
gave the lustre of mid-day toruts below;
When, what to my wondering eashotild appear,
Hitt a miniature sleigh and eight, tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be Ett.lglek.
More rapid than eagles his coursers' they came,
And he whistled and shouted and called them by
name
".Now, Dasher! now. Dancerf;now, Prancer
and. Vixen/ •
On, °met! on, Cupid! on, Ikriader ! and /31lizen!
To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall !
Now dash away dash away: dash away, all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly.
When they meet with an obstacle mount to the
sky,
So up to the house-tops the courers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys and St. Nicholas too; •
And then in a twinkling I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoot
As I drew in my head and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and
•
soot;
A bundle'ol toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler Nit opening his
pack.
Ills eyes, how they twinkled! his dimples, how
merry!
His cheeks were like ropes, his nose like a cherry!
His dear little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe be held tight in his teeth.
And the smoke it encircled his bead like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round*belly,
That shook when he 4aughed like a bowlful of
Jelly;
He MS chtibby and plumb, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him In spite of myself.
4 wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Sown gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his
work, '
And filled all the stoekinp—then turned with a
Jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all dew like the down of a thistle—
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
"Merry Christmas to al; and to all a good-night,"'
CDRISTMAS:—The Christmas holidays
are at hand, and doubtiess visions of
.:'Santa Claus" and "Kriss Hinkle"—can
dies and 'sugar plums—have for weeks
been disturbing the dreams of the little
folks, while the waking thoughts of older
heads have been equally busy in looking
up gilts and arranging for a proper ob
servance of the great festival. Recognized
by 'the Catholic, Episcopal, and German
church's generally, asfine of the most im
portent festivals in the ecclesiasical calen
dar, it is rapidly being accepted by all
clastes as a season of hilarity and good
will. The festival, as ‘ everybody . .knows.
is designed to commemorate the birth
of "our Saviour, and hence its name, Christ
mas—derived from the Latin words,
Chriatua (Christ) and ifissiza (sent)--literal
ly,,Clrist-sent. The time of year in which
the Advent took place. is involved in
doubt The narrative in the inspired re
cord, as to the shepherds who watched
their flocks by night, the finding of the
babe in the manger at Bethlehem, &c.,
makes it probable at least that it did not
occur in mid-winter. Indeed the Christ
ian Church in the first and second cen
turies was much divided on this point—
the festival being dbrterved r by different
portions of it in almost every month of the
year, from January to December.
The fixing of tt , e 25th of December was
the act of Julius 1., the Pope or Bishop of
Rome from 337 to 852, A. D., this date cor
responding with the period then observed
In most of the Western, in contra-diatinc
tion to the Eastern, Churches, The selec
tion of this data was doubtless I:reedy in
fluenced by the fact that the Pagan nations
generally observed the same' period as a
festival in ; honor of their deities, which,
under various names, symbolized the. Sun
or Fire. Out of the same fact largely grew
the custom of making gifts, wreathing
churches in evergreens, erecting Christ
mas trees, dm., which now characterize our
Christmas observances.
The Goths, Saxons, and Celtic nations
generally in Northern and Western
Burope, were worshippers of the Sun or
Fire, and regarding the Winter Solstice as
a most important part of the year—the
beginning of the renewed life and activity
of the forces of nature—these nations from
the oldest times celebrated this season with
the greatest festivities, in honor of their
great deity, Odin or Woden, (Sun), in
whom these forces of nature were sym
bolized. Hence the Yule-feast, in Com
memoration of the return of the fiery
"sun-wheel," among the Germans, who
belieyed that during the twelve nights
from December 25 to January 6, they could
trace the personal movements and interfe
rence on earth of their great deities, in
break Mc up the icy chains of Winter.
Du ring this season, the people gave them
selves up to rejoicing and feasting. Work
and business were suspended ; houses
were decked with laurels and eVergreens ;
Brea were kindled in and out of doors;
presents were made by parents, to chil-
dren,and.exehange4 between hiende,—
Among the ruder nations ( the Druids es
pecially), the festival degenerated into the
most lictrfitions orgies, accompanied by
sacrifices of cattle, and even human life,
to propitate their deities. As Christianity
spread into Western Europe, the power of
the Church was brought to bear —upon
these pagan rites; but denunciation fail
ing to suppress them, the Christian festi
val of Christmas was introduced as a sub
satiate ; and hence the customs of making
presents, decking churches with ever
greens, the visitations of Santa Claus, dr.c.,
(borrowed from the pagan fetitivals),which
have been super-added to the religious ob
servances prescribed by the !Church.
Whatever the origin of these customs,
they are now time-bonored. Prudently
conducted, they become innocentwpnices
of pleasure, and we . believe in their ob
servance. While djily honoring the re
ligious festival. which commemorates the
great love of God in the gift of his Son
for the redemption of a sin-ruined world,
let it also be marked in every homiehold
as an occasion of rejoicing and good-will.
Especially let the hearts of the little ones
be (nada, glad by joyous anticipations
and atilitmore joyous realizations,' even if
their fore-castings do not rise above vi
sions of "sugar plums. " Welcome
"Santa Claus," with his merry, good-na
tured fine, and pockets full of toys ; don't
be afraid of a little fun. Pitt up the
"Christmas Tree," and let it be loaded
with mementoes of affection and good
will, as between parents and :children,
brothers and sisters, friends antlrelativer.
Let the "old iblke" become children
again, while the little folks" have life's

effects of whiclite died. the seine 'Wed-
The circumstances attending the unfortu
nate occurrence welettru are about these :
After breaafast, Mr, Bowden took hi s
gun, and calling his. !mends, went out pi
kill some rabits for dinzter. Toward 9
o'clock, skirting the woods,:about halt or
three quarters or a mile from home, the
dogs started a hale. The weeds being
thick and high, Mr. Bowden attempted to
mount a stump to get a view of the anim ,l.
The stump was partially decayed and gave
way, the cock of the gun striking.a portion
of it, And causing the weapon to be dis
charged. The muzzle of the gun was
touching his abdomeh, and the entire load
entered that vital portion of the body, tear
ingand wounding Or bowels lw a-terrible
manner, and lodging in the liver and lungs.
Mr. Bowde.h fell to the ground, and was
• 2
unable to rise or even giveiiarm. In this
condition he remained sir hours, before he
was found. He endeavored to drlie his
dogs home that their appearance without
him might excite suspicion and cause a
search to be made. Two of the dogs left
him, but a third, and one which had
never shown much fondness for him. re
mained and licked his hand, and showed an
intelligent and tender sympathy for him.
Mi. Bowden wr ote upon a piece Of pa
per a brief announcement of his wounded
condition, described the place at which he
could be found and with the string of hie
powder flask tied it to the dog's neck, and
tried to drive the the animal home. It was
not until he bad dragged himself t. 9 some
undergrowth and broken &switch, and sev
eral times whipped the dog away, that the
latter was driven off. In going homeward
the dog passed across Mt. Richard Sauxay's
place, whete his conduct attracted the at
tention of Mr. S. and lt brother of Mr.
Bowden. The animal could not be in
duced to approach nearer than forty or fifty
yards of them, and when they endeavored
to approach him he would run away in_ a
certain direction and then stop as if invit
ing them to follow. They did follow, sus
pecting something wrong, and some few
hundred yards distant found the wounded
man, and the dog by him.
Mr. Bowden was conveyed to Mr.
Sauxay's residence, Where he lingered in
great pain, but perfectly conscious until 9
o'clock at night. ,
It may be remarked as somewhat singu
lar, that after the deceased had started out
bunting, his eldest brother expressed him
self as very uneasy about him. He seemed to
have a premonition of some accident to his
brother, even went once and found and beg
ged him to come home. He was about
starting a second time in search of him, in
company with Mr. S., when the dog above
Mentioned attracted his attention : It may
also be mentioned that the dog followed the
body to the chamber and retnaibsd with
the corpse continually refusing to be driven
from the room.
