SKATING PARK. —The students of
Pennsylvania College were busy last
week in converting the meadow west of
:Stevens Hall into Skating ground, by
'banking up a footway on the southern line
Hof the meadow. It required a good deal
of labor, which was cheerily gone through
.111 that ha now needed is a suf
ficient fall of rain to fill the meadow, and
then sufficient cold to freeze it over. The
young men not having control of the
elements w ill have to wait patiently for
the desired rain.

DOES IT PAY TO ADVERTISE 7—The
Boston Journal says that a leading book
firm in that city answers this question as
follows : They published an addition of a
book of 500 copies, and did not advertise it.
.in a bout a year nearly the whole edition re
anainCd on his hands, as the author, who
%ea ja.rgely interested, did not think it
would pm to advertise. Finding his book
did not se. l l, he followed4",advice of his
publishers and advertised freely. His book
has now gone through seven editions of 500
copies each, end the eighth is ordered.
'The author now believes in advertising.
TO CORRESPOllDENTt3.—Correspou
dems must observe certain rules, or have
their contributions go into the waste bas
ket. Let the subject matter be-of gener
al interest. Say what is to be said in the
shortest possible space. Avoid personal
ities. Write a clear, legible hand. And
never write on both sides of the same
sheet. The latter rple is requisite, as
N:engthly articles have frequently to be
cut up for different compositors. We
have now on band It letter from the West,
covering 17 pages, sufficiently interesting
to justify its publication. But being writ
% en on both aides of the sheets, and not
b k vying leisure to re-write, it had to he

HINTS ON THE USE OP
GOAL.—The following timely hinter oat
the econoutioal use of coal, from the.
Sctentific America", will be Nand worthy
of it careful study. by many °four rea
ders:
A common fault is to use too coarse
wood for kindling, and to ouch of it.—
This, while it gen orally succeeds in light
ning the coal, leaves, a bed of ashes be
low the coal which interfere% with the
draught unless raked out—an operation
which always retards the combustion of
ignited coal. - The wood should be of
some rapidly burning variety which
gives a quick and high heat, and should
:be split tine. It should be so placed that
the coal will remain on the top of it, and
not fall through to the grate, leaving the
kindling on the top of any part of the coal.
The amount of kindling wood required
depends much upon the 'sized coal. 'A
common mistake is to use too large sized
coal. A good rule, where stoves or
furnaces have a good draught, is to use
coal as small as can be used without in
convenience from its
_sifting too freely
throtigh the grate. '
Grates should have thdr bars closely
set for stoves that are cleaned out daily,
and have fires lighted in themeach morn
ing, while those which are intended to
have fires kept in them continuously for
days or weeks will not admit of fine
grates, on account of the accumulation of
ashes and small "clinkers.". There is
much uifference in coal in regard to the
formation of "clinkers." These are
nothing but vitrified, or partially vit
rified, earthy matters, and only can form
when a high beat is maintained ; they are
apt to.be troublesome when there is too
great draught. A coal stove or furnace
should be so constructed that its draught
can be perfectly controlled. The bottom
draught should admit of being closed alt
tight, as nearly as is possible to make it,
and there ought always to be provision
made for a top draught. If, however, the
draught of the chimney should be so
strong that air in too great quantities is
drawn in at the bottom when the dam!
pare are closed, a damper in the pipe
which will clitise it partially, must be em
ployed. though in sluggish chimneys
such a damper is apt to force the gases of
combustion into the room, and therefore
it ought always to be avoided when possi
ble.
The practice of putting ashes on the top
of a fire too keep it is very productive of
clinkers, although It answers the purpose
very well in other respects. Damp coal
screenings are better, and may be econ
omically burned in this manner. If a
welfare gets very low, the quickest way
to extinguish It is to rake it at the bottom.
To, preserve fire under such circum
stances, a little coal should be placed on
the fire, and when it has caught more
may be added, and the raking deferred
until it has got well ignited. When
the fire bricks have become burn
ed with clinkers which have fused and
adhered, they may be cleaned by throw
ing oyster or clam shells into the fire box
when the fire is very hot, and allowing
the fire to go out. The clinkers will lien. ,
erally cleave off without the use of much
force the next morning. From two
quarts to one half a peck will be sufficient
for most stove..., and the operation can be
repeated if some of the clinkers still
adhere.
A WORD FOR LOCAL NE WSPA
PERS. —We take the following from the
N. Y. Tribune. It is true, and we com
mend it to every o tie who has 11 interest
in the comity where he resides:
"Nothing is more common than to bear
people talk of what they pay for adver
tising, dco., as so much giving in charity.
Newspapers by 'enhancing the value of
property in the neighborhood, and
giving the localities in which they are
published a reputation abroad, benefit all
such, particularly if they are merchants
or real estate owners, thrice the amount
yearly of the meagre sum they , pay fo •
their support. Beside,every patine spirited
man has a laudable pride in having a pa-
per of which he is not ashamed, even
though he should pick it up in New York
or \% ashington.
"A good looking, thriving sheet helps
property, gives a character to locality, and
is in many respects a delirable public
convenience. If from any cause the mat
ter in the local or editorial column should
not be to your standard, do not cast it
aside and pronounce it good for Dotting,
until satisfied that there has been no more
labor bestowed upon it than paid for.
If you want a good readable sheet it must
be supported. And it must not be support
ed in a spirit of charity either, but because
you feel a necessity to support it. The local
press is the power that moves the people."
Starlit:ad Mr. Wanamaker's very inter
eating note in another column. It is clear
and conclusive, and shows very plainly that
the present move at Oak Hall is based on
true business principles, and is sure of large
success. We are only anxious that our pa
trons come in for their full share of'the
spoil.
JUBILEE.—The Philadelphia Catholic
Standard has a detailed notice of the ser
vices, known as "The Forty Hours' Devo
tion," in connection with the Jubilee,in the
church of St. Francis Xavier, Gettysburg,
(Rev. J. A. 801 l pastor,) which — commenced
on the 17th ult. The services were impres
sive and interesting, the pastor being assist
ed by Father Mcllvaine, of Elizabethtown ;
Father Pieper, of Columbia ; Father Cox,
of Tremont ; Father Russell, of Columbia;
and Father Field, of Chambersburg.
The altar was handsomely decorated,
displaying much taste and beauty, and dur
ing the evening services was brilliantly il
luminated. The services openened on
Sunday morning at 6 o'clock, with the - Mass
of the .Exposition, lollowed by High Maas
at 10, Vespers at 3, and devotional services
at 7 Y. M.. On Monday and Tuesday Mass
was said in the morning, with leaching at
night, the entire services closing on Tues
day night with a procession of the Sunday
school, in honor of the Blessed Sacrament,
all the visiting priests taking part. The
music by the choir is represented to have
been very fine.

bran SEE :—We enclose yon an extra ad=
Vertiaement, which you will please WWl
tate, for a few days; for our regular standing
advertisement. You, as a business man,
will easily appreciate the position of affairs
as stated by us in the enclosed, and - 1%0
doubtless approve of the remedy we have
adopted. Every one anticipated an unusu
ally brisk trade this season, and every one
has been disappolntect. We, perhaps, have
been the most fortunate of all Philadelphia
merchants, our business showing a large in
crease over last year's ; but we have made
such prodigious preparations that we can
not hope in the ordinary way to dispose of
our purchases and manufactures. But two
courses are open to us,—either to carry over
all this stock into next year, to our great
inconvenience, if not loss ; or to clear it out
by a sweeping sale, being content to recov
er the money we have invested in this sur
plus stock. „We have adopted the latter.
You have already spoken to your readers of
our present stock,—lts immense size, its
excellence, and its cheapness, and many of
your neighbors are among our most valued
customers. Will you please now call their
attention to our proposed sale, and say to
them that with the single exception of our
"Executor's Sale," last Winter, there has
not been in the life of any of them so good
a chance for a bargain in clothing. Get
them to read every word of our advertise
ment, and then if they have any regard for
their own interests, we will be sure to sell
at least one suit to every man of them.
Yours very respectfully,
JOHN WANAMAKER,
(WANAMAKKE %.% BROWN,)

EDUCATION IN TYRONE.
Education is in a backward state in this
township, yet we hope that this article
may do something toward rousing the
people from their lethargy. The school
houses are very bad. There is scarcely a
house in the district flt for the purpose
for which they are used. Those "new
houses" which have been built during
the past few years, and of which they
boast so much, are mere "shanties,"
either built where "two roads cross," or
on some out of-the way place where lands
are cheap ; and then only enough was
purchased to build the house on, while a
play-ground for the_ children was never
ev en thought of. Another prominent
feature is, that the houses are all fenced out
instead of in. The houses are defectively
furnished, especially in the line of black
board surface. It is a false and pernic
ious economy, which would build school
houses and employ teachers, on the
"cheap" plan. School houses should be
made attractive and comfortable— provid
ed with the best of appliances—and live
Teachers put in charge of them, if the
School system is to prosper. Let us have
old fogyism in any thing but School mat

TIIE Government officers are bringing to
grief the illicit distilleries in Brooklyn.—
They were beaten off by mobs, but they
pwreovered. The New York Herald sap
it is remarkable, that notwithstanding the
extent to which illicit distillation is carried
on, and the 'resistance which revenue ogi
cars are met with, even to attempted assas
sination, as in the case of Brooks, In Phil
adelphia, the Government is still able to
show an increase of twenty or thirty mil
lions a month In the revenue receipts. It
is evident that the Administration is doing
well in protecting honest distilleries from
the frauds of illicit manufacturers. We are
having now, it is evident, tbit blessings of
an honest national administration.
A RECKNF publication on the prices of
wild beasts for shows 13tates that a first
class hippopotamus is worth $5,000 or
$6,000 ; a lion, $l,OOO or $2,000 ; an ele
phant, $3,000 to $6,000 ; a giraffe, $3,000 ;
a Bengal tiger, $2,000 ; a leopard, $6,000
to $9,000; a hyena, $5OO, and that a New
York house in the last three years has sold
$112,000 worth of these an i male, exclus
ive of a lively trade in monkeys, birds &c.
WHEN the military 111.04 upon the riotous
striking minert i f of Aubin, France, a woman,
who had her child in her arms, turned to
fly, pressing the baby to her breast ; the
child was struck by several balls In the
head, and the furious mother, turning back,
and meeting an officer, hurled her child in
his face, exclaiming, "Take it, ruffian!
You want our blood ! Take it, then—drink
it!"
THE Lancaster Farmer remarks that
many Lancaster county farmers are now en
tirely divested of their forests, many plan
tations not having as much as a single tree
left for shade for men or beasts. A far Mer
lately sold the last two acres of timber on
his farm, in West Lampeter, by the tree,
ninety in number, bringing between five
and six hundred dollars. One hickory tree
sold for fifty-eight dollars. Timber is get
ting everl , year scarcer and more valuable
