SEED Tnur.—ln two or three weeks our
farmers will begin to put in the wheat crop.
The majority prefer from the 18th of Sep
tember to the end of the month.
Formerly from the let to 12th . of October,
was the favorite time ; but gradually this
was anticipated, until newt, a month ear
lier is prefered by many.
Up to the year 1840 the wheat was a very
uncfrtaln crop in a circuit of fifteen miles
aroffnd•Philadelpbia. Indeed, so frequent
ly was it damaged by weevil, and rust, as
to almoit cause its cultivation to be &ban
doned. Since, however, by the adoption
of earlier planting and the introduction of
other varieties of wheat, espeCially the Med
iterranean, the crop has become as certain
and productive within the region named,
as perhaps any other portion of the State;
There is perhaps more seed sown now to
the acre•than formerly ; or, rather there is
discrimination shown by our farmers as to
the quantity the particular ground they
have to sow may require. It is well known
that rich soil needs less seed than poor or
moderately affluent soil, because in the for
mer the plants grow stronger and "tiller"
more. Some sow, promiscouily, double
the amount of seed that others do, and it
they succeed in obtaining a crop one year
by it, they conch(de the rule to be fixed
-and that is the proper quantity.' And just
so it is with the thin sower.
The true *ay to ascertain which mode is
the best, as well as what amount interme
diate quantities of seed will produce, it is
very easy for each one to find out for him
self, by sowing, in the same field, different
lands withdifferent quantities, taking care
to number ibe lands and note the same in
the diary, which era fernier should have
for daily noting down the operations of the
farm.—Ger. Telegraph.
How TO BUM) A CORN Cats.—How to
have a rat-proof corn-crib, is a great ques
tion among farmers. - A correspondent of
the N. Y. Farmer's Club gives the follow
ing erpetience :
I have a corn-crib that has stood for
twenty years, and has never bad a rat, and
but one mouse in it, to my knowledge.

and board up the ends with ungrooved
boards ; let each bent be twelve feet long,
six feet wide at the still, and seven and a

bold 250 bushels. I never bad an ear to
hurt on account of the great width. If
preferred, lay the floor with lath or narrow
boards, with room for ventilation. Each
post should stand on -stone, about three
inches from, the ground, and each stone
have a Antadation two feet square and be

Basan.—U you wish to bake your bread
or biscuit without a dry, hard crust, you
cam do so very readily. Just before pla
cing the bread in the oven, rub Its smiles
with latter or lard. This will close the
pores, preventing the escape of gas which
is produced by the yeast, and the escape
of the steam which is produced by the
moisture of the heated fait Bread thus
baked will be simian crustless. Indeed, so
bag as the moisture is confined, it will be
difilailt bunting the leaf to any great depth.
The large vacuities in the bread will be
more porous and tierefore lighter.
