A GOOD TIME.—The squad of Soldiers undefSergeant Gibbons were paid off on Saturday last, and had. a Re-Union at their barracks on the Cbambersburg pike in the evening, to which a number of their friends from town were invited. WHO CAN BEAT IPT— Our friend Henry Herbst, of Straban township, brought to our office sbunch.of Peaches, 27 in number, all on one bra'hch, and of good size ; also a basket of very fine peaches, as nice as any we have seen this season. He has two stalks of corn meas uring 13 feet S inches and 13 feet 4 inches, raised on the farm of John Rinehart. REGISTER.—The voters of this Bor ough will see to it that they are registered. The Registry Law compels all persons to htive themselves registered ten days be fore the election. Persons voting on age must also be registered. AGRICULTURAL FAIR.—The First Annual Exibition of the Carroll County Agricultural Society will be held at West minster, :u d . , on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the 28th, 29th, and 30th of September, inst., and the Ist of October. The grounds are in. fine condi tion, the premiums offered are liberal, and the Fair promises to be a great suc cess in every respect. ACCIDENT.--Afr. Jacob Hoover, of Freedom township near Emm ittsburg, had his leg broken on the Bth inst. Mr. H. had been out on his farm and was on his way home when his horse threw him and broke his leg above the ankle ; his leg was very painful for a day or two when mor tification set in and on the following Sun day he died. He was a very fine man and was much respected by all who knew him. BARN BURNT.—During the thunder storm on Friday afternoon last, the barn of Mr. Jeptha Du bbs, in Highland town ship, was struck by lightning, and set on lire. The barn, with all the product of the farm for the past year, a number of stacks of hay and grain around the barn, a calf. a new Buggy; and other articles, were deatroyed. The live stock, excepting the calf, was saved. We hear it rumored that there was a partial insurance in the Mum masburg Company, but have no definite information. FROM EUROPE.—In to-day's issue will be found an interesting letter from Mr. MCPHERSON, now in Europe. FATAL ACCIDENT.—On Wednesday week, a boy aged eler,en years, son of Mr. George Sell, residing near the "old Furnace," above Fairfield, fell from a tree, a distance of about twenty-eight feet, and fractured his Skull. lie suffered ex cruciating pain until death relieved him, on Friday. THE PARKTON AND MANCHES TER RAILROAD.—This proposed road rans from Park ton in Baltimore county, on the Northern Central, .29 miles from Baltimore to Manchester in Carroll coun ty. The distance.between those two places is something less than fourteen miles. We learn that the road was let last week to Messrs. MoGuok3t & Co., the work is to be commenced on the 11th of October, Mr. Jos. S. Garr, long experienced in locating Railroads,bas been appointed the Chief Engineer of the road, and will com mence the location, as we have been in formed, on Monday next. Mr. Stenger held forth in his usual spread-eagle style for an hour or more on the "nigger," followed by Messrs. Wm. McClean and H. J. Stehle. On the return home, the engine, apparently sympathizing with the programme of the evening, con cluded to "fizzle" out too, blowing out one of its bolts ! There was some lively scamp ering to get out of the way of danger, the blowing out of a bolt being mistaken for the bursting of the boiler. The panic subsided, and in due time the party reached Gettys burg, rather the work for their trip—some of thein thoroughly demoralized either by bad whisky on bad politics. The camp aign opens inauspiciously for the "ring." At; itICULTURAL ,FAIR.—The Coun ty Agricultural Fair will be held next week, commencing on Tuesday the 28th. We hope our Farmers and citizens gener ally will promptly send in their products And articles for exhibition.
