Just when the red June roses blow
the gave nee Gas spear ego—
A rose lidom teintson brastlt remind
The secret that Its heart oonessled,
And whams haltlay, halt-tender grape
Blushed Welt upon the giver's tion.
A yaw ago—• you ago—
To hope was not to inum.
Just when the red June roses blow
I plucked her one—a month ego;
Its hs/f-blown crimson to eclipse,
I laid It on her smiling Ups ;
The balmy fragrance of the south
Drew sweetness from her sweeter month.
•
Swiftly do golden moments creep—
To hold is not to keep.
The red June rases now are past,
This very day I broke the last;
And now its perfumed breath is hid,
With har, beneath a coffin-lid.
There will itepetala fall apart,
And wither on her icy heart.
- And so, at three red rose' coat,
My world was gained and lost.
THE CARE OF CANARIEIL
In the UK place, do not use a painted
cage. 'lhe birds will peck the wires, more
or less, and the paint very injurious, of
ten fatal to them ;so is tobacco amain. A
bird kept in the room where the odor of a
cigar is allowed is not only subject to great
discomfort, but its life is endangered. The
larger the cage the better for the birds, and
if not new, it should be scalded and well
dried before putling them into It. This
precaution is necessary to avoid mites,
which prey upon the birds and are sure to
infest the nest, unless great care bo taken.
The cage should be thorougly cleaned every
morning. The easiest way to do this is to
placer& piece of clean brown paper (not
newspaper, for they often peck it), on the
drawer of the cage, changing it every morn
ing.
The perches should not be forgotten,
but drawn out, washed, and returned, one
at time, this can hardly be done while there
are eggs in the nest. At that time care
must be taken to avoid faring the cage, as
it disturbs, the eggs but it should be kept
as clean as possible.
The drinking-cup and bathing-dish should
be well washed and filled with fresh water
every morning (in warm - weather it should
_be changed oftener), and the seed-cup re
pleniahed. Canary seed principally should
be given, but a little rape seed every day
is beneficial, and bruised heap seed in
about the proportion of one.third (all hemp
seed is too hearty and beating) is good, par
ticularly when laying and brooding.
The seeds must be fresh and dry, A piece
of .cuttel-ftsh bone is always needed. It
should be put in the upper part of the cage,
as ft is thus kept clean and dry. A lump of
sugar occasionally may do no harm, but ai
a general rule avoid sweets, and keep bird‘
like children , on plain food.
Lettuce, plaintain seed and leaves, chick-
weed, are all good if fresh; and the birds are
very fond of them. Fruit, perfectly ripe and
fresh, does good rather than harm. At the
time of laying and setting, also while bring
ing the young, the birds require richer food
than usually. • An egg, boiled hard (not the
yolk alone—it is too heating, pounded with
biscuit ands bread, about half and hall;
should be given daily, and the earlier the
better, especially alter the young are hatch
ed, as the parents feed them from this and
the green food provided for them.
The egg and biscuit cannot be safely ne
glected. About a fortnight is the time of
incubation. Do not stimulate your bird too
much to set, for she will be apt to go be
yond her strength, and loose her own life
by raising too many broods. Two or three
broods a yettr . are quite enough. It is a
mistake to seperate the pair while the fe
male is setting, or at any, time, unless,
which is very rare, the male pecks the
.young. -
Guard your birds from draughts„from ex
posure to cold at night, and also from too
much heat. Bear in mind that their part of
the room, when the weather is cold enough
for a fire, is warmer than yours, as the heat
ed air ascends. Daring cold nights the cage
should be covered, unless the fire is kept in
all night.
Always beware of a cat. She should ne
ver be allowed:in the same room. She has
been known to pull a bird between the cage
wires, not even leaving a feather.
Avoid frightening your birds. It is very
easy to have them know and love you, and
welcome pit:lr coming, but they do not like
to be handled. - •
Time and care rae required to keep birds
well and happy in a cage
To:•Darvz AWAY ROACITEB An, ANTS.—
Take powdered borax and scatter wherever
the cockroaches most frequent, and they
will disappear directly. A safe and effica
cious remedy for a most annoying vermin.
Arnim be driven out of cupboards if lumps
of camphor are scattered about them. Ants
object to strong scents, and in tropical cli
mates are prevented from entering rooms
by powerfully scented oils and gams.
A sponge can be sprinkled with sugar
and laid upon shelves where ants are nu
merous ; the next morning plunge the
sponge quickly into boiling water, and
most of the intruders will be destroyed
then scatter camphor and you will have no
trouble.
BOILING POTATONS.—There is a great
deal constantly said as to the best way to
boil potatoes. The following, said to be
an Irish mode, Is no doubt, very good. It
is said that in Ireland they always nick off
a piece of the skin, put hem in a poTof
cold water, which is graduahy heated, but
never allowed to boil ; cold water should
in added as soon as the water begins to
; when donei pour all the wator off,
cover the vessel with a cloth, and in few
siinuteethey are cool enough for use.
Snows will push on old and young
trees just where the limbs are not, wanted.
Remember that the new tender shoot will
soon be a hard, woody branch. A slight
rub will now remove it, but if left a year
the knife must be used. Rub off these
shoots when young and save cutting here-
