AUGUST COURT.—There are an un usual number of petty criminal cases pend ing in Court, -- either awaking trial or the action of the Grand Jury. The time of the Court,. however, has been exclusively occu pied in the trial of F. Weems Black, indict ed for the murder of Thomas Lee, in Feb. ruary last. All Tuesday morning was taken up in getting a Jury, the regular panel be ing nearly exhausted. As usual in such cases most of the Jurors called had formed or expressed an opinion as to the guilt or innocence of the accused and were set aside. The killing of Lee is admitted by Black, but he claims that it was done ac• cidentally. It will be recollected that Black called Lee from his bed, upon the allegation that chicken•thieves were about the stable. Both went out, Black taking his gun with him. In a few minutes au explosion was heard by the family and Black returned to the house stating that he had shot Lee ac cidentally, the charge entering the neck and passing upwards into the head, produc ing instant death. As no person witnessed the shooting, the case rests entirely on Blacks statement and surrounding circum stem*. The commonwealth has been mating witnesses to show that Black aid Lee were on bad terms, had , frequent quar rels, that Black bad made frequent hostile threats, and that his conduct prior to and subsequent to the killing indicated a pre meditated purpose. The case is still on trial, and may occupy the balance of the week. -The defence had notopened their case up to the hour at which we go to press. The case being still in progress, we refrain from all ,comment on the nature of the tes timony. NOT Till:lE.—The Cbmpiler continues its insidious assaults upon Mr. WERT, the county Superintendent, and is laboring hard to impair his usefulness by caution ing Democratic Directors against his pur poses. In its last issue, Mr. WERT, by implication, is charged with endeavoring, in concert with a eanvaasing Arent now in the county, "secretly" to effect a change of text-books. ,We . do not niderstand the motive back of these assaults. Mr. WERT to the County Superintendent, and whether his election was wise or not, he will have to do with School matters in the county fort the next three years, re shoul4,while in office, have the same generous support accorded to hint, which was given to Mr. SREELY and his predecessors. We be lieve that .Mr. WERT will honestly em, deavor to discharge his official duties, and. will not permit himself to be coaxed or driven into a partizan relations. In regard to the charge of desiring a change of text books, lwe are anthciAsed l .Mr. WE= to say that the statements of the Compiler are utterly unfounded so far as they relate to him, As County Superintendent he has nothing to do with text-books, except to gis!ehis opinion when desired by.Diree tArs. Iqfti his unilbisnly declined to re commend the edoption of any particular text-books; Mad has had no agency, direct or indirect, hi the changes recently made, or in 'contettplation, by Boards of Direo tors. FaSTrosts:—l notice an article in the "Local 4 Department of the "Com piler," of August 13th, intitled "Text- Books—A- Caution," seemee hdried at myself,as I believe no other agent is now operating in the county for the supplant ing of text-books now used, and Mr. Wert. But for one passage, I would not notice it publicly, viz. the charge of oper ating Psecretly." In each township I haie presented the cooks boldly, with recommendations from numerous leading educators, in different Metes, of whom J. P. Wickersham, State Superintendent of this State, is one. I have also given to teachers and directors the wholesale and introductory rates of our books, and have twig been anxious to exhibit them in pnb lio, as well as private. Bat I must have alighted the author of "A Caution," an error of the head and not of the heart, as I did not know of his having any thing to say in the supplanting of Text Books, neither did I know that to escapee charge of "Secrecy," it was necessary to fee an editor to "blow for us," or get the sanction of "retired officers." Neither did I think there was so little edticatios and judg ment among "Democratic DTrectors," as to demand a "Caution" from their party leaders. - As to Pltr. Wert he has neither part nor lot in the matter. He examined most of my Text-Books and pronounced them "worthy of patronage" both "by merit, and economy," which is no more than any honest, charitable man would do, when so convinced. Could we meet Mr. "Caution." and have a chat on the sub ject of supplanting the Text-Books now in use, we feel confident that he would help us equally as much as Mr. Wert. Very Respectfully, J. E. WILLIAMS, Text-Book Agent. LECTURES.—Hev. Mr. Burnham, of Philadelphia, lectured in the Court house on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, on the principles and doctrines of the New Jerusa lem Church, signified in the "Holy City," in Rev. 21, with an account of the life and spiritual writings of Swedenborg. He will continue these lectures in the same place to-morrow (Saturday) and Sunday evenings This will furnish an opportunity for those who may wish it to learn something of that remarkable church and remarkable man, in themselves so very interesting, and yet so imperfectly understood by the public in genend. Seats free. 1t CAUTlON.—Extended SUCCESS in any department of business justly awakens competition, and owing to defective men tal and moral structure, often begets envy. Now these are to be expected cnd may be met with energy and determination; but not unfreqnently the bounds of legitimate rivalries are overstepped, and base, un scrupulous men stoop to use the patron age of others to further their nefarious purposes. With the assistance of science, and by means of industry and honesty, in providing a potent remedy, Dr. Sta. , - ver's Old Standard Tonic Herb Bitters have attained unparalleled celebrity, hav ing been before the public for the last thirty years. Wherever they have entered the sick or complaining household, their effects have even exceeded expectation, and so far sur passed all we have ever claimed for them by circular, card, or otherwise, that the public confidence in the medical qualities of the Bitters is unbounded. We do not fear the competition of the empirical throng who attempt to palm off remedies upon the people, which are not scientifi cally compounded, and are destitute of available qualities. Their empiricism will be discovered in the end, and the ineffi ciency of their preparations found out. We would rather 'be envied for merited sue. .cess than despised for failure, however ungenerous it may be for man either to envy or despise. Against another and a worse class of individuals, we are forced to take actiorr. We allude to those who take advantage of our popularity, and at tempt to gain public favor-and confidence by counterfeiting the Old standard Bil lets, barely imitating the label, or making Other approaches to its preparation calcula ted to deceive, and as a matter of course, in sp far as they succeed, M bring ,our ex cellent Tonic into disrepute. In order to further protect ourselves, and save the afflicted from im position, we have concluded to change our Label so as Over hereaftar to aristain our indentity, and keep the reputation of the Old Standard intact. We intuit great ex pewit, by so doing, but - the end warrants the means. The new label along with the es,pilori, directions and neat ornaments tion.will present'att excellent steel portrait of C. H. Their establishment has becorne a great favorite with the children because of the "good clothes" sold there at prices so moderate that mothers can't help buying them. "Get Johnny his new. suit at Oak Hall this time, mother, and you will be better pleased and more economical than ever before—to say nothing of the windmill." pgr-"Fresh as a Maiden's Blush" is the pure peach Complexion which follows the use of Hagan's Magnolia Balm. It is the True Secret of Beauty. Fashionable La dies in Society understand this. The Magnolia Balm changes the rustle Country Girl Into a City Bell more rapidly than any other one thing. Redness, Sunburn, Tan, Freckles, Blotches and all effects of the Summer Sun disappear when it is used, and a gen ial, cultivated, fresh expression Is obtained which rivals the Bloom of Youth. Beau ty is possiole to all who invest 75 cent at any respectable store and insist on getting the Magnolia Balm. Use nothing but Lyon's Kathairon to dress the Hair.
